"The Evil Dead" Films
So yesterday while I was at Vintage stock, I managed to get Evil Dead II AND Evil Dead Regeneration! Why? Because I love Evil Dead! I already had the first one on VHS and ifi t was there, I would have gotten Army of Darkness.
The Evil Dead: This is probably the darkest of the movies so far. It has some nice acting, great atmosphere, outstanding special effects for the time, some really creepy scenery, and to top it all of, actual scares! Normally in today's world, this movie would have been nothing but jump scares and even more gore with characters that are flatter than cardboard. But no, there are actually a couple of scenes that really put me on the edge of my seat!
One is where Ash (known as Ashley in this movie) walks down to the cellar to find the other guy and before he leaves the stairs the camera slowly (and I mean slowly) moves around the room for what seems like hours until it goes back full circle to Ash. Another has a girl who's been attacked by the evil spirits, while she's facing the window, two other girls are playing a game where one player has to guess the cards. The girl in the window starts guessing the cards correctly everytime until it gets so fast that she turns around and she's become possesed.
Admittely this one isn't my favorite of the three movies but I can appreaciate the grimness and just flat out horror the movie has to offer. This one's alot like Mother 1. It's more serious than the sequel and doesn't have the same entertainment value but it's still a good movie and is better than most horror movies.
Evil Dead II: Now THIS is what I like! Better effects, better characters, better atmosphere, better badassery, and of course more entertainment value. Evil Dead II however is not just an ordinary sequel that's better than the original. It's actually sort of a remake too! However what people don't know is that this was actually not to be.
For some reason Sam Rami couldn't get the rights to include the original footage of The Evil Dead for a little recap, so the guys just filmed a new version of the same plot but with lesser characters and a different set of events. At least that's what I heard. But anyway, if this is true then I'm glad they didn't get the rights because that would've ruined the uniqueness of this sequel. As you all know, Evil Dead II is not as serious as The Evil Dead with moments that unsuprisingly based off the Three Stooges and scenes with over the stop gore.
However that's why I find the movie so awesome and entertaining. It's just so different from the original and yet at the same time it's exactly like it! They even reause some of the camera angles from the first one and yet it still feels original! This is like Mother 2. It's more focused on humor and is more entertaining than the original.
Army of Darkness: I have to be honest, I love this film as well. Yeah, it's definetly not as dark as the original movies but then again I don't think it was meant to. This film is basically just comedy wheras The Evil Dead was just horror and Evil Dead II managed to be a fine balance of both. There are some completely awesome moments like the ending where Ash returns to the S-Mart place and fights a demon with a shotgun, that whole scene is awesome.
Ash also gets some funny one-liners and basically just kicks ass through the entire movie. Though for some reason he's kind of a douche bag in this one, though granted it could be because of all the hell he went through but I don't know that just seemed odd to me. This one is more of a action comedy rather than a horror which is odd but I still think this movie should at least get average to positive reviews instead of below average reviews.
Evil Dead Regernation: I'm on the second level and so far the game's pretty fun, though sometimes Ash would repeat the line "Oh come ON!" sometimes.
So what do you guys think of Evil Dead?

Isn't this a little feminine?
Yes. I know. It was my ex wife's.
But you wear this stuff?!

Re: "The Evil Dead" Films
Evil Dead is one of those great gems where the sequels live up to their predecessors. Back in 06 I actually edited all 3 films into one 21 minute tv episode. I would show this video but it's forever lost. I love how if you watch them in order it's a 6 hour story. I also love how Ash starts out as a wimp, who slowly progresses into a badass. I will admit though, at first I didn't like Army but now I think it's one of the best in the trilogy. It's still hard for me to pick which ending I like best. When first found out about this trilogy at the time I was driving an oldsmobile that looked like the one in the movie, only mine was a regency, same color and everything. Which I thought was way too cool.
The video games are fun, I have beaten all of them (except the C64 game which I never played) they live up to the movies. I like how Regeneration takes place the way ED2 was originally going to end, where police come to the cabin and accuse Ash of going insane. I didn't understand the plot to Hail to the King though, I just don't understand why Ash would go to that cabin AGAIN, since he had so much fun going there the first time. If my girlfriend told me to go back there, there would be no way I would. They need to make a new ED game, I don't have an ipod so I'll never get to play the one they released exclusively for it.
The remake is filming now as we speak, while I have my doubts on it, i'm still game to go see it. I'm gonna look at it more as a sequal rather than a remake even though Bruce is nowhere insite. I like that he refuses to let anybody else play the role of Ash cause that's his role so there will be no Ash.
Did anybody else see on the AoD tv version where they bleeped out badash? I don't understand that at all, he's not saying ass for one, badass isn't offensive, and evil Ash wasn't even saying badass he said badash!
Last but not least I'll share some pics of my Ash figure I got last month

They released a trailer at NYCC for the new remake, and from what I read, it looks amazing. Everyone in the audience was thrilled about it and not let down. The trailer is to come out around Halloween. Here's a pic

I'm really excited about it, Bruce, Sam, and Rob know their fans, and do not want to let them down. I also read that Bruce said Raimi is still threatening him for a Evil Dead 3, or 4, or Army of Darkness 2.

Yeah, I saw that a couple days ago-- it looks very well done. I'm pretty sure with Sam and Bruce producing we won't be let down.

My girlfriend, a big fan of Evil Dead II, is wondering from this promo image and trailer whether the film is a remake of the first, second or both.

Strictly the first movie. The second movie, while a lot of people say it's a remake of the first, isn't completely true-- the first ten, maybe fifteen minutes of Evil Dead II is a remake of the first movie, but after that, it's all new material. It's the same for any sequel made more than four years after the original. The first Evil Dead movie started production around 1977, wrapped in '78, had a limited release and run from 1979 to 1982 and finally opened worldwide in 1983. The second movie, Dead by Dawn, began production in '85 or '86 and was released in 1987. So with the ten year gap between the two, they had to recreate the end of the first movie some ten years after finishing the original. The first movie featured five friends going to a cabin in the woods, however, at the beginning of Dead by Dawn, three of those five are missing, having been written out of the canon. Technically speaking, none of the Evil Dead movies actually even follow each other and take place in slightly different canons each time. The same is true of the third and final (?) movie, Army of Darkness.

Re: "The Evil Dead" Films
I realy wish I still had the video I did where I edited all 3 of them into a 21 minute tv episode. Suprisingly I did it very nice. Like when Ash was listening to the tape it was taking up lot of time so I cut to him touching a button on the recorder, added a fast forward sound, and stopped it where Noby was saying the words to wake the dead. Then it ended with the directors cut ending to AoD.
The remake looks like it could be a mix of both 1 and 2. With the girl sawing off her arm, could be a posessed hand in there, and the shot of the chainsaw. It's really hard to tell what with the footage not being really clear. But we all see a nice trailer by Halloween.
I really hope they do a ED3, or AoD2, with Bruce, I don't care if he's bloated with white hair, he is still cocky and badass enough to be Ash. Just to old to do those awesome stunts he used to be able to do. He even said himself in My Name is Bruce he did a stunt himself then after said he was too old to be doing that. I believe it was when he was hanging onto a truck and he was dragged a bit.
Me and my girlfriend are actually about to watch AoD tonight, since the last two nights we watched ED1and2, finishing off the trilogy tonight.

Interestingly, the original Alien script didn't have Ripley. Also, it looks like Shiloh Fernandez from DeadGirl (the guy with the beard in the trailer) will be playing an Ash-like character in this new movie.

Well as Bruce himself said, the protagonist in the pitch for Evil Dead, Within The Woods, was a female, in Evil Dead the protagonist was a male who screamed like a girl, and now in the remake the protagonist is a girl who screams like a man.
I see no big deal with the movie not having Ash, it's a fresh new take. I'm just glad there's something new. I'm also very glad Sam Raimi won the lawsuit over the people who were going to make a unlicensed ED4,or else we could have had a fake ED4, no Bruce as Ash, and we all know it would have sucked.

I don't think he'll be an Ash like character, I saw a different character wearing a blue shirt and brownish pants, that sounds more like Ash. The guy with the beard seems more like a Scott, or a douche...
They also said that all the characters names together somehow say Demon.
BTW what if they showed Scott in ED1, being raped by the tree's when he was trying to leave? I think that would have been the funniest thing ever.

Yes, a defenseless man getting raped by demons. Hilarious.
Seriously, though. That is so not cool. If you had said that in an elevator it would be wrong on so many levels.

Well Sharyl was raped by the tree's, so why wouldn't Scott be raped too? Seems like he would be hahaha.

Re: "The Evil Dead" Films
It came out Wednesday at 10AM I saw it so many times. Looks even better in HQ.
IGN has a rewind theater of the trailer and they point out a lot of things. Somethings I even noticed, such as the oldsmobile sitting there, like it's been there a real long time. The new group arrives in a jeep. The one guy wearing Ash's clothes, could be that he's the new Ash, but his name is David. Another weird thing is they are saying Mia is the main girl, but in the trailer she is the first to become a deadite. They also show a girl ( i think it's Mia not sure) holding a necklace, which could be the same on Ash gave to Linda. Around this time it's when the video froze on me so I didn't finish it. One thing I noticed that they didn't point out, was the group says why is there blood on the floor? The blood could be there from the previous Evil Deads of course. In a way it almost seems like this is going to be a semi sequel, maybe directly from the first one and not 2, and Army.
My thoughts, it should end like Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie, and Ash is sitting in front row of a test screening and turns around and says, So what do you think? To the producers, and everyone comes out and throws a big party, they all turn to deadites, and Ash fights them off and says, I'm back baby. Opens room for Army of Darkness 2. hahaha, that would never happen though.
Oh for those interested here is the original Within the Woods

I watched the original The Evil Dead last night for the first time. It really is a straight horror-survival film with very little humor. The Evil Dead II also took quite a bit from it, so it's easy to see how the remake is essentially re-adapting both.

I really didn't get that at all from the trailer for the new movie. The new movie seems to be a straight remake of the first movie. As for people who consider "Evil Dead II" a remake of the first movie, they're wrong on almost every level. The "Evil Dead" films have very little continuity between them. Each one is set in a slightly different universe.
The beginning of each "Evil Dead" movie recaps fifteen minutes or so of the previous film in a sort of "remake" fashion. After the first twenty minutes of "Evil Dead II," it's no longer a "remake" but all new material. It's kind of like "Doctor Who" in that way.

I still like on the commentary to Evil Dead II when Bruce says that in the sequel Ash is going back to the cabin because he had so much fun going to it the first time. But I agree, if you take out the recap's, and change the ending to Evil Dead 2, and replace it with the footage in AOD that starts with Ash falling from the sky, you got yourself a goo 4 1/2 hour long movie.

Re: "The Evil Dead" Films
Evil Dead 2's continuity is ruined by the cabin being in good condition inside, what with the cellar door not being destroyed, and the shotgun is sitting there on a gun rack shelf. My theory, the demons rebuilt the cabin, or Ash is just halucinating because he and his friends were doing drugs in the first one.
I'd really like to see the scrit for the second one's first draft, I remember reading it was going to end with the police arriving to arrest Ash for killing everyone. That is what happened in Evil Dead Regeneration the game for PS2. But that might have been just a rumor.

Re: "The Evil Dead" Films
Look, the point is that there's no point in trying to connect the "Evil Dead" movies, as they don't connect in a traditional fashion. There is a discontinuity between each film and trying to make sense of it is inane. Each movie is set in a slightly different canon.

I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

Re: "The Evil Dead" Films
I was specifically referring to a film event that exclusively showed the three Evil Dead films, connecting them by the retconning opening scenes.

It's possible, sure there will be continuity errors but it's possible. They all 3 connect, more though with Evil Dead 2 and AoD. Just remove the ending of EDII and continue it to where AoD starts after Ash's recap. It can happen, I've done it.

It's blank, now. Maybe it's just glitching, or they took it down...?

It's working fine for me, maybe your adobe reader or something needs updated. I've only read a few pages it is good so far. I need time to read the whole thing.

I just read the whole thing, it's pretty amazing. Mind-blowing stuff. I hate to say it, but this script alone puts the original movie to shame. Then again, looking at it another way, they're two completely different beasts.

That is awesome, a lot of fans who have read it are saying the same thing. I haven't read the whole thing, though I read the ending to see if Ash makes a cameo. Bruce has to come in the movie somewhere as Ash or not. I really like how the Oldsmobile is in the movie like it has been there forever, making this maybe a sequel to the original Evil Dead, leaving out EDII and AoD.

You even could go so far as to say that the cabin wasn't destroyed at the end of Evil Dead II and the beginning of Army of Darkness, and that its destruction was an illusion caused by the time portal and this is 30 years later in the same "continuity," but after reading the script-- they make it much more clear that the writings in the Book of the Dead are not just silly Sumerian texts that summon wisecracking demons but rather a book to summon the spirits of the actual Hell and eventually bring the biblical Satan, or "Accuser" to Earth. This script makes it very clear that they're dealing with the actual Satan. The original movies you could argue that the "demons" were just mischievous spirits, but this time, there's no question behind who "He" is.

That is awesome. It's good that this is being brought into a new direction. The second teaser came out last week I dunno if you saw it yet or not. Looks way better than the first trailer.

I will be back in my home state of Ohio when this comes out, may wait and see it in the dollar theater. Why give full price, when if I wait a month or two it's in a theater that costs a dollar.
