Seen any good movies lately?
Wow, no topics at all in the general forum! Time to spam it up.
What are some movies you guys have seen recently. I saw Wolverine a few days ago which I thought was pretty fun overall. I didn't go in too excited or with too many expectations like other superhero movies. I saw "Taken" earlier which normally I don't see movies like that but it was with some friends. Really intense!

Ah, nice to see someone breaking the fourth wall and posting in the general talk forum. I saw Taken earlier this year, loved it. Liam Neeson is awesome. Wolverine was decent, better than X-Men 3. I also saw Star Trek on Thursday. I hadn't seen any of the previous movies or shows, but I was very very impressed. Definitely gonna see that again. I'm really excited to see Terminator here in a couple of weeks!

The best movie I saw in theaters recently was 'Watchmen,' but the best movie I watched in general lately was Akira Kurosawa's 'Ran.'

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
Same here with Star Trek, I saw it earlier and never really got into the shows at all. I guess I wasn't introduced into it like I was with Star Wars. Really great movie I thought!

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
Saw Land of the Lost. Mehh I dunno, if you're a Will Ferrell, Danny McBride fan, it has some laughs, gotten some bad reviews, could go either way with people. It's definitely bizarre. Knowing our favorite movie around here, I figured I have no problems giving some "bad" looking movies a chance
Especially knowing those guys are normally funny, to me.

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
It's been awhile since I saw it but Zombieland was a lot of fun. Got some DVDs for X-Mas, "The Man Who Knew Too Little" Bill Murray, pretty good one I hadn't seen in forever.

I saw Sherlock Holmes on New Years Eve, it was okay, it reminded me a lot of Wild Wild West.

Honestly, I don't really see what the problem with Wild Wild West is. Sure, the giant spider (thank you, Jon Peters) is a bit much, but it's...passable.

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
This takes a lot for me to say, but I have to admit, I really really enjoyed Avatar. I thought it was going to be a movie with just CGI, but it actually has a plot, a good story, a meaning, love, and the CGI was truly magnificent. That is very rare for me to say, for a good example I hate Star Wars episodes 1-3 because of the CGI. The only down fall to the movie was the length. There is no need for a movie to be that long. For those who haven't seen it, I say check it out in 3D at the theaters, because it will probably be the only true way to watch it, or on IMAX.
Re: Seen any good movies lately?
I had the opportunity to see Avatar in IMAX 3D, and it was really great. Like UE5000 said, compared to the Star Wars prequels, it's a much better film in terms of a complete package, story, etc. It's not something I would put in my top 5 films of all time by any means, but it's good for what it is--especially if it's just the tip of the iceberg.

Well, given that Wild Wild West is one of my favorite movies, I'd say a good way.
Interesting side note, did you know the role of Jim West in Wild Wild West was originally written for Keanu Reeves?
He switched off with Will Smith who was originally going to play Neo in The Matrix and the rest is sort of history...
Several rewrites were done to both Wild Wild West and The Matrix and they became the movies we know today.

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
I was unaware they "switched off" their roles... I knew that Smith was considered for the role of Neo, but turned it down in favor of Wild Wild West.
I happen to like that movie, actually. There were some memorable scenes (the magnetic neck braces and discs-of-death was a creative death-trap, and the scene had a lot of tension for me), and I especially liked the premise of awarding "lost" land back to the rightful owners. It'd be so awesome if Mexico got back what America stole.

I'm fan of the Star Wars saga, but the prequel trilogy wasn't good like the original trilogy, looks like it was made just for giving some details. The only good point is the visual effects (like Jedi Master Yoda, lightsabers and ship battles), and of course, the score from John Williams

so I just finished watching Speed, it was on TV. I was gonna just watch the start but got hooked back into it. That villain looked very familiar...

I've always meant to see Speed, but still haven't.
I saw Shutter Island. It was good; I even liked the ending. I'm a sucker for Scorsese flicks. And Leonardo. Just wait until Christopher Nolan's Inception, guys.
I also just finished watching the newest DC Universe animated feature, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. It was spectacular! Honestly....probably my favorite of the whole run so far, but none of them are stinkers by any stretch of the imagination. The Spectre featurette was also phenomenal and caught me totally off-guard. Really good stuff here. Can you tell I'm a huge DC fanboy?

I took a friend of mine to go see "The Rum Diary," I don't think she understood it, but I loved it, being a fan of Hunter Thompson. It was basically a prequel to "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," which is one of the more bizarre movies I own...

I recently saw Three Stooges and 21 Jump ST. I gotta say both of these movies were f---ing hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing at 3 Stooges, those guys did such an awesome job. Way better than the people who portrayed them in the 2000 ABC biography movie. I love that movie.
21 Jump ST was also hilarious, I didn't think I'd like it but I really enjoyed it. I also enjoy that they had Johnny Depp and ther guy from the original show make an appearance as the original Jump ST guys. I didn't think I'd enjoy skinny Jona Hill over Fat Jona Hill, but he was just as funny.
Will Ferril and Zach Galafinakis are coming out with a Presidential debate movie, and Zach Galafinakis shaved his beard but keeps his stache, and he looks like he'd be a really good Mario.

I love Zach Galafanakis he's such a priss. Especially his Between Two Ferns talk show bits he does. Due Date was also a funny movie he starred in. I don't reference him for Hangover since like everybody likes that movie so much they paid money to see the same thing again, and again for Part 3. He's really funny on Awesome Show as Tairy Green.

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
Watched "Mirror Mirror", "The Three Stooges", and "Dark Shadows" recently.
Mirror Mirror was sweet, and the sets and costumes were beautiful. I also liked how there was very little CGI opposed to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.
The Three Stooges was pretty funny, but nothing more than that. I probably wouldn't watch it again honestly.
Dark Shadows was kind of refreshing. I never saw the old TV show, but I enjoyed this movie. It could have been funnier and could've had less sexual references, but Helena Bonham Carter was brilliant! I enjoyed Michelle Pfeiffer in this too. Definitely has the Edward Scissorhands/Beetlejuice vibe to it.

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
I caught Men in Black III last week with my girlfriend for a late-night showing. We were the only two people in the entire theater, which was pretty cool. I had been wanting to see the movie for some time as I'm a huge fan of the first two, though I admit that I had my reservations. I hadn't read anything necessarily bad about this new installment, but I still just didn't go in with any particular expectations.
Needless to say, I was very surprised. The film was much better than I thought it would be; good enough to rival the quality of even the first. Everything just hit the mark so well in terms of pacing, premise and feel. The alien designs were markedly inspired, which was greatly appreciated after the lazy work of the second and basic looks of the first.
The film made money. Well worth checking out, especially seeing that they may just make more!

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
I too saw Men in Black 3 and enjoyed it far more than I expected. Having the time-travel element take them into the 1950s-60s gave them a great opportunity to showcase the kinds of old-school alien designs popular from that time period. And the ending wasn't too shabby either.
While on vacation today I saw Brave. Although I'd still put it in the "good" category, it didn't really meet my expectations. The entire story came off as uninspired and there wasn't any big twists or turns you couldn't really figure out for yourself. The film certainly doesn't play dumb to the audience as much as oh, say--Madagascar 3, but it's not as groundbreaking as it could have been.

One thing that I didn't really get about MiB3 is the central conceit that K is somehow 'stern' and unable to find joy in life due to a personal tragedy. If you were to watch the original MiB it's plain that he's a very fun-loving guy and taking a lot of amusement in K's naivete and inexperience.
Seriously, watch the 'press the red button' scene with him bobbing his head to Elvis (who isn't dead, but just went home) and tell me that they're the same character!

I saw Brave on July 4th.
Safe to say it was amazing, especially on a visual scale. The direction of the story surprised me a bit, even if some parts were a bit predictable, but that's half the fun for me, really.
I also watched Bigfoot on SyFy and laughed my head off as a terrible CG-I Bigfoot crushed people and chomped their heads off and played soccer with their cars, soooooo XD;
I'm the kind of person that's entertained by MOST kinds of films. The ones that don't and make me feel angry for having wasted my time and/or money watching them are few and far between.

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
Watched Spawn last night with my girlfriend. It was the first time I had seen it outside of bits and pieces as a kid. I'd always been curious to see it again, but only just now had the opportunity (Dish) and motivation (John Leguizamo!) to do so.
I must say, it stands as an interesting testament to what early comic film adaptation could be. It straddles the line between excellent adaptation and terrible B movie, with different elements clearly not measuring up to others. It starts with a vague narration that's thematic and metaphorical, but otherwise not very clear. That's not a good sign.
An odd, yet sometimes enjoyable, stylistic touch is that scenes never fade from one to another, they jump-cut in a very television show manner. It seems to be a means to make the comic origins more apparent, but does little more than drop any immersion you might have. It just feels like you're watching a TV show cut to commercial.
I was really astounded at how poor the computer-generated demons and hell landscape was. This is a film made 4 years after Jurassic Park, and yet all ILM could muster is Playstation 1-level graphics. This is especially disappointing as certain shots clearly utilize animatronic heads which are much more detailed and creepy than the smooth textures of the CG.
The real reason for watching this movie is, of course, John Leguizamo. I've never seen any other actor enjoy doing films like this as much as him. He has fun with these characters. Each time he's present you'll find yourself smiling because it's the one thing that can really hold your attention.
In the end, it's a Sam Raimi film. Give it a chance, if only for him and Leguizamo.

I saw Spawn in theaters back when it first came out. I liked it back then. Not something I couldkeep rewatching though. I never got into the comics either. Though I loved The Maxx. The man who plays Spawn is actually in Toxic Avenger 2.
Were you comparing this movie to Raimi movies or saying he directs it? Cause he had nothing to do with it.
