The Official "Quotes" Thread!

Postby Serum » Tue Feb 16, 2010 9:24 am

Alright, I'm making this for anyone who has any quotes to share, whether they're original or well, quoted. I'll get us started.

Not all those who wander are lost.
~ JRR Tolkein

He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.
~ Samuel Johnson

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

~ Frank Herbert

The passion for destruction is also a creative passion.
~ Mikhail Bakunin

The things you own end up owning you.
~ Tyler Durden

...and if you hear vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme
to your tambourine in time,
it's just a ragged clown behind,
I wouldn't pay it any mind,
it's just a shadow you're
seein' that he's chasing...

~ Bob Dylan

But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out.
~ Numbers 32:23

Sleep. Those little slices of death. How I loathe them.
~ Edgar Allen Poe

Just do me a favor, if you're going to quote lyrics from a song, don't quote the whole song, just quote the part you think should be quoted. Have fun!
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

Fear. Fear attracts the fearful… the strong… the weak… the innocent… the corrupt. Fear. Fear is my ally
Darth Maul

Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumber'd and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages, and will lie
Battening upon huge seaworms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

Alfred Lord Tennyson

I'm back with more quotes!

"If he had smiled why would he have smiled? To reflect that each one who enters imagines himself
to be the first to enter whereas he is always the last term of a preceding series even if the first term
of a succeeding one, each imagining himself to be first, last, only and alone, whereas he is neither
first nor last nor only nor alone in a series originating in and repeated to infinity."
~ James Joyce, Ulysses

“I don’t care if people hate my guts; I assume most of them do. The important question is whether they are in a position to do anything about it.”
~ William Burroughs, author of Naked Lunch

"I felt like a monster reincarnation of Horatio Alger: A man on the move, and just sick enough to be totally confident."
~ Hunter Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

"I can remember, standing by the wall. The guns, shot above our heads. And we kissed, as though nothing could fall, and the shame was on the other side..."
~ David Bowie, Heroes

"Happiness is just a word to me, and it might have meant a thing or two if I had known the difference.
Emptiness, a lonely parody, and my life another smoking gun, a sign of my indifference.
Always keeping safe inside where no-one ever had a chance to penetrate a break in...
...let me tell you some have tried, but I would slam the door so tight that they could never get in.
Kept my cool under lock and key and I never shed a tear another sign of my condition.
The fear of love or bitter vanity that kept me on the run, the main events at my confession.
I kept a chain upon my door that would shake the shame of Cain into a blind submission.
The burning ghost without a name was still calling all the same, but I just wouldn't listen..."
~ Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts, Gotta Knock a Little Harder

"I am not sorry."
~ The last words of Leon Czolgosz, the man who assassinated William McKinley.

Back to the Future Quotes (Happy 25th anniversary!!)

Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads!

1.21 gigawatts? 1.21 gigawatts? Great Scott!

This is it! This is the answer. It says here... that a bolt of lightning is going to strike the clock tower at precisely 10:04pm, next Saturday night! If... If we could somehow... *harness* this lightning... *channel* it... into the flux capacitor... it just might work. Next Saturday night, we're sending you back to the future!
Doc Brown

Oh... one other thing. If you guys ever have kids and one of them when he's eight years old accidentally sets fire to the living room rug... go easy on him.

Silence Earthling! My name is Darth Vader. I am an extraterrestrial from the planet Vulcan!

Whoa, this is heavy

I really enjoy forgetting. When I first come to a place, I notice all the little details.
I notice the way the sky looks. The color of white paper. The way people walk. Doorknobs. Everything.
Then I get used to the place and I don't notice those things anymore.
So only by forgetting can I see the place again as it really is.
~ David Byrne, True Stories

Who's ever written a great work about the immense effort required in order not to create?
~ Dostoyevsky Wannabe, Slacker

Never regret yesterday. Life is in you today, and you make your tomorrow.
~ L. Ron Hubbard, author of Battlefield Earth and Dianetics

There are no more barriers to cross.
All I have in common with the uncontrollable and the insane, the vicious and the evil,
all the mayhem I have caused and my utter indifference toward it I have now surpassed.
My pain is constant and sharp and I do not hope for a better world for anyone,
in fact I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape,
but even after admitting this there is no catharsis, my punishment continues to elude me and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself;
no new knowledge can be extracted from my telling.
This confession has meant nothing.

Merry Christmas!
---
Where do you think you're going? Nobody's leaving.
Nobody's walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas.
No, no. We're all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here.
We're gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing
Crosby tap-danced with Danny fucking Kaye. And when Santa squeezes his fat white ass
down that chimney tonight, he's gonna find the jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the nuthouse.
Hey! If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I'd like Frank Shirley,
my boss, right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody
Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head,
and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten,
four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog
-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm
-headed sack of monkey shit he is! Hallelujah! Holy shit! Where's the Tylenol?

~ Clarke Griswold (Chevy Chase) "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation"
