Just noticed that it's 1upmushroom's 13th birthday today so I thought it'd be a good idea to make an official thread where people can give birthday blessings whenever a member's birthday comes 'round.

So, lets all give a big happy birthday to 1upmushroom and congratulations on becoming a teenager!

Thanks everybody! I really appreciate all these birthday wishes from both old members and new. Our community is really coming together; that's the best birthday gift I could hope for after a long year of working on this site. :D

Since it's my 21st my family decided to make it special; something that hasn't been done since we were kids. Most of my family showed up, including three of my four brothers, one sister and her husband, mother and father, grandmother and aunt, and girlfriend. Pretty good turn-out.

We all got together on Sunday (yesterday), the day before my actual birthday, since it was most convenient for everybody. It wasn't anything extravagant; just playing The Game of Life (otherwise known simply as Life) and bantering until pizza was ready. There were four types available (garlic chicken, pepperoni, pepperoni & sausage, and cowboy) and plenty of soda, including Dr. Enuf, which Ryan here (Phlibbit) sent well in advance. :D I have to say, it was a party favorite.

After that, cake. And as this birthday was special my mother decided to make a custom cake for the first time in a long time. Mario-themed, just like the best of 'em. Check it out (and, yes: those are 21 candles):

Image

We finished with gifts. Now, I've been a big Super Mario fan for as long as I can remember and have always gotten at least some Mario merch every birthday. However, this year was overload. Everything was Mario-related. Made me feel like a real kid, which was great.

The best gift of was probably a custom painting of the stage 2 Koopa done by my artist sister. As is her signature style, she focused on mood and atmosphere rather than realism. Considering how creepy Koopa is, I think this suits it. All I can say is that it's pretty damn awesome. Let me know what you all think:

Image

Here's a photo of everything I received:

Image

We didn't do much for my actual birthday (today) except for a dinner, which took place at Red Lobster with my mother, grandmother, and girlfriend. Huge meal for all four of us, including my first (legal) taste of alcohol in the form of a Bahama Mama (a frozen blend of tropical fruit flavors mixed with Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum and topped with a splash of Myers’ dark rum) while finishing with a "chocolate cake" shot, which actually did taste a bit like cake. Warm down the throat. Not much of a drinker, but both were fun additions to an otherwise already great meal.

All in all, it was a birthday worth remembering. :P

Awesome cake, RedStar!! I myself have all of those figurines, actually I have quite a few Shyguys and Koopa Troopas (and I mean Koopa Troopas, sadly I lost the three turtles mum used on my 9th birthday cake...) because they are so freakin' cute!

The painting is awesome! You absolutely must add it up on the website on a future update - I'm sure your sister would appreciate it if you do!

And dare I ask, did any of the presents come in Super Mario gift wrap and tags? Every year I am lucky to find videogame-themed gift wrap and tags -usually with a Super Mario design- so I make sure mum uses it on some, if not all, of my Christmas and birthday presents from the family.

Of course, when in 2009 we... had reason to start worrying for Dennis Hopper, I especially hoped for Mario gift wrap and tags (whether or not featuring Bowser), and thankfully I got my wish in the form of green wrapping paper with a Mario, gold coins and three classic power-ups design and New Super Mario Bros. Wii mobile danglers which made very effective gift tags; and again from May 29 last year onwards - but obviously double due to certain... other complications about May 29. Again I got my wish - in the days leading up to certain DAMME soothing on August 7, I bought a few packs of New Super Mario Bros. Wii gift wrap and tags :)

That's some really cool stuff, Redstar. Gotta love the care put into making a cake like that. What flavor was it?

Out of all the Mario merch you got, I'd say the plush blanket is the coolest thing.

And of course, the painting is great. Everyone knows the Koopa stages are among my favorite parts of the film, so seeing any kind of interpretation of that is a wonderful surprise.

So cool how you saved the rest of your Dr. Enuf stash for this special occasion!

Oh, we will at some point. We already have a few good photos of it so it'll be easy to put up. I'll just need to get some artist's comments from her to make it a proper addition.

No, none of them came in gift wrap at all, let alone "Super Mario" gift wrap.

Phlibbit wrote:That's some really cool stuff, Redstar. Gotta love the care put into making a cake like that. What flavor was it?

Yeah, my mother has always put care in her designs. She's done some more extravagant cakes over the years, but this was a good dessert to hearken back to the early days. The base was funfetti while the star was regular.

I think I chose the subject more as a gift for you than myself. :P

Yep. It was coming up and thought it would be a good opportunity to share it. :D

That's pretty awesome! You must have a lot of Mario merchandise by now! Sadly, there's not much aroundh where I live anymore, after the Mario Kart 64 action figures, all the Video-Game merchandise declined :( So a lot of the Mario stuff I have is ancient! All in all: I'm jealous  Heheh, cool stuff ya' got anyway! :D

That De-evolved Koopa painting is very well done! It's awesome to see someone take their time and come out with such a fine composition! :)

That cake must have been pretty damn delicious too..

Wow, Redstar! By the looks of it, I'd say you had one mega awesome birthday, wouldn't you? Your sister is an extraordinarily talented artist! I can just imagine your delight and shock upon receiving such a heart-felt, one-of-a-kind gift. I'm looking forward to seeing it in even more glorifying detail once you post the pics on the site.

And you got Mario Chess! I saw that in a catalog once, and wanted it (if only for the figures, LOL).

Your mother's cake-baking abilities are certainly impressive. :) I don't know about you, but I would have had second thoughts about taking a knife to something so pretty...which is why I always make sure to have a camera handy when I do. And, by the looks of it, I suppose one can say you were thinking the same thing.

I'm so glad you had such a memorable birthday. I'm not much of a drinker, either (I didn't even drink on my twenty-first birthday). I started less than a year ago, and only do so on occasion. And the only type of alcohol I like is Smirnoff Ice. :D

Thanks again, both of you. It really was a mega awesome birthday, so to speak, made only better by being with my family. I also appreciate all the positive comments I've received for my mother's cake design and sister's Koopa painting. I'll have to let them know the reaction to their work! :P
