Lost "Blue Velvet" Footage Found

Postby Redstar » Thu May 12, 2011 2:25 pm

I just read an interesting article linked by Jeff Goodwin via his Facebook on an interview with David Lynch on his film Blue Velvet.

In this interview, David talks about the process in which footage was cut from a film back in the late '80s/early '90s and how, over the years--with the Internet especially--people have come to have interest in that type of footage.

David also says that he had thought the footage was lost or thrown out since Dino De Laurentiis' production company had gone bankrupt, been sold and then re-sold. To his surprise this footage was recently found on an early workprint somewhere in Seattle and will soon be featured on the upcoming Blue Velvet Blu-Ray.

I bring up this article for several reasons:

1.) It has Dennis Hopper in it in a role sometimes compared to his Koopa

2.) Lightmotive, the production company behind Super Mario Bros., went bankrupt just like Dino De Laurentiis' company and as such the materials for the movie are either lost or trashed

...and

3.) Wouldn't it be amazing if a workprint for the movie was found somewhere and worked into an updated re-release? It's farfetched, but it's clearly been done countless times. I keep reading, almost every couple of weeks, that a workprint for such-and-such cult film has been found and will be used to make a director's/extended cut. Why can't the same happen with Super Mario Bros.?

I wouldn't be surprised if David Lynch is just releasing this footage now because of one of his bizarre ideas told him to. The guy is amazing but he's also insane.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.
