SMB inspired Thwomper boots

Postby Wesr » Fri Dec 16, 2011 12:18 pm

This build is Starfighter29's (a member on another board and maybe on here) fault for posting pics of the boots used in the movie and actually I'd probably not even have gotten started if he hadn't been patient in answering my questions. A bit of a warning though: these aren't going to be screen accurate. To me these are something that could have been made in the movie's universe over the last 20+ years as technology changed.

This is going to be a long build between making the parts and actually getting them cast and then put together while finishing my current short term projects. I like the cast iron look of the blue foam mats from Walmart everyone uses (and i have 5 of them from a failed armor build) so I'm going to make a lot of the pieces out of them, seal them and then cast them. So far I have the boots, i took off the old soles, and some parts for the side pistons that I'm going to mold and eventually cast.

I'm trying to keep it as cheap and simple a build as possible. I'm tempted to make a giant game style Goomba to wear them eventually as they're too small for my feet. :lol

All the pics I have now are of the boots:

And of the two bolts I'm casting for the pistons. I decided to have some fun and work in some other game characters so the pistons will be made by the Hammer Bros thus I'm using the normal hammer for the top bolt insignia and the Sledge Bro hammer for the bottom. Not my best work but after seeing some of the logos coming out of a machine shop i worked at I figured it would work. Still might add the initials H.B. on them if i can sculpt them well.

I have to cure the sculpty on the bolts and then coat it with super glue to make sure it stays stuck. Probably use my heat gun as it's so thin it isn't worth boiling water for it.

Here's my progress so far on the Thwomp emblem for the sole of the boot. I am probably going to put it in the fridge to stiffen before i do more work as it's pretty soft at the moment.

I admit my sculpting isn't the best but I figured the parts are rarely ever going to be seen that I could get away with it.

Excellent work, Wesr. I like how you're incorporating symbology from the games into the aesthetic of the boot while still maintaining the overall concept. It helps that the Thwomp and crossed hammers are both already used in the film, albeit in different places and slightly different designs.

Be sure to keep us posted. I'm looking forward to seeing how this project comes out.

Looking good, you can probably use all the artwork and concept stuff on the front page of our site as a reference along with the scenes in the movie as well in helping you build them.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

Small update. I ran out of spikes with only 4 spots to fill so now i have to either make a fast mold and pour them from fiberglass or buy another 12 which i have no use for.

Looking good! Using those spikes was a good idea. Too bad you don't have enough. I wouldn't buy another pack if that many would go to waste, though you never know.

I actually just remembered a pair of gauntlets i got at a renfaire that has spikes. If they're not the right size they have enough to redo it with at least.

Wesr,

Can you give us a few concept sketches to show us what your intended final result could look like?

it isn't pretty and you can see why i didn't do well in art school lol. I want to try and keep it respectful to the originals. this is just a rough idea and no doubt i'll end up changing things as I go. For one thing the piston is way smaller than in the movie. I'm using some blue conduit to simulate the spring/thread look. My original plan didn't work and this looks better.

I'm also going to tear out the cloth inside the boot since this house seems to love to spawn mildew. I'll replace it with a foot of some sort. I need to get a pic of the foam i plan on using. I'll be casting the parts out of resin but the foam has a nice cast iron look to it for texture.

The drawing is a bit simplistic, but it gives a fairly good idea of what you're going for. It's exciting to visualize what can be done with the concept, especially considering what you've been able to show us so far. I say just keep going and use your imagination as your chief guide; you'll surely wind up with some fun props in the end.

I'm going to try and force myself to rework the sketch more. Sadly ever since art school my love of drawing has turned into me not even wanting to do rough sketches. It appears that once i get my refund for this one game i ordered i have to buy more spikes for the thwomp i made as the spikes i have on some leather gauntlets aren't coming loose without me drilling them out.

Pretty cool on the rough sketch!

Listen, the idea isn't to get it perfect on the page. The idea is to give you a vague idea of the overall shape. It's better to do a rough sketch and add/remove the bits you like or don't like than to look at a finished prop and go "Ooh..." at something you hadn't noticed before.

I myself am fairly crap when it comes to drawing (or am I just out of practice?). What I do is, I use a blue, non-photocopying pencil to start, a red pencil to flesh out, and a mechanical pencil to perfect.

Try looking at motorcycle magazines, because it looks like you have a "biker" thing going on anyway. No doubt you'll find something that would just look perfect on the boots.

I was staring at them all day trying to figure out how to make a pattern to cut out the pieces in foam. Now I know why i would never do any good at sewing lol. I think i'll cut the pattern in separate parts so i can just piece it together once it looks right and then use it to cut the foam mat.

Well i've made a mold of the thwomp for the bottom of the boot. Hopefully it turns out. I never used this RTV before and it was some really thick stuff. Of course i ran out halfway thru all my other projects.

Great! I feel that the Thwomp logo is one of the coolest connections to the game in how close it is. I can just imagine a race of dinosaur-people who are essentially flat-faced, spike-maned creatures based off the Thwomps. :P

Stegosaur spines, that's what they've got. Idea needs work, though.

i have to do some cleanup work on the mold but I might give it a try with fiberglass resin to see how it looks. Sorry for the lack of updates but my lazy butt hasn't gotten much done lately. Been trying to finish up Halo and Fallout props.

I love where this is going! I have seen a few pairs of womens ski boots at Goodwill the past few months, would love to have a pair. There's nowhere to ski around here either :D
