OFFICIAL Fan-Sequel Screenplay Thread: "II" & "III"

Postby Serum » Tue Dec 20, 2011 9:46 am

Okay, as you all know, I already wrote a massive fan-fiction script based on the major screenplays for the "Super Mario Bros." movie.
It was an experiment, a dry run for what's really important, for what I'm about to attempt.

I read somewhere a long time ago that when Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo signed up for the movie, they signed on to what's called a "Three Picture Deal," meaning there were going to be two sequels to the movie. Unfortunately, they never got made. So what I'm going to do, in my spare time between writing my main fiction for my publisher and writing articles for this website, I'm going to attempt to write not one, but two sequels to the movie we got, as we saw it in theaters or on video. The idea behind this is similar to the filming of "Back to the Future Part II" and "Back to the Future Part III," they were written at the same time and shot at the same time, presumably the way "Super Mario Bros. II" and "Super Mario Bros. III" would have been. So here's what's going to be in this thread: my ideas for casting these movies, set in 1993 with actors from today's current scene and utilizing modern technology in the scripts to make a much more outlandish and wild adventure than anything possible in 1993. So stay tuned, there's more to come, as for now, all I have are titles for the films...

"The Mushroom Kingdom: Super Mario Bros. II"
"Forest of Illusions: Super Mario Bros. III"

...keep your eyes open and be sure to fill me in with your ideas, thoughts and suggestions!

Here's my dream cast...

Mario..........Kevin James
Luigi..........Sean William Scott
Daisy..........Ellen Page
Toad..........Stephen Lynch
Daniella.......Carmen Electra
Koopa.........Willem Dafoe
Wart..........John Goodman
Iggy...........Will Ferrell
Spike..........John C. Reilly
Wario.........William Forsythe

...stay tuned!

~ Serum

Okay, here's the first little tidbit of the treatment I've written, remember, it's bound to change, but it explains how Daisy got in the condition she was in at the end of the movie...

Treatment for "The Mushroom Kingdom: Super Mario Bros. 2"
by (Serum)

OPEN ON a shot of THE KING'S FACE. He looks weary, tired-- ancient. He is slowly de-evolving back into the FUNGUS he had been for so long. His eyes, even the whites of his eyes are browning, reddish and pale in color. He is dying.

THE KING: I cannot retain this human form for long, my darling child. I must tell you the secret of the Mushroom Kingdom, and of this world.

The camera pans out to reveal he's in a ROYAL HOSPITAL ROOM. Daisy is sitting by his side, holding his hand, which is transluscent, he is slowly becoming a SLIME MOLD. A group of technicians are standing by, watching him, he's hooked up to all sorts of machines, but they don't seem to be doing anything good. There are tubes running down his throat and EKG wires are hooked onto his forehead and chest.

THE KING: For every person in this world, there exists a complentary opposite on the other side. The knights that saved you from and ultimately destroyed Koopa are no exception. Somewhere in this world, the red one has a counterpart-- he is dangerous. He lives out beyond the barrier, where the air gets thin and life extends into the Forest of Illusions, where we all go when we die. Find him! Destroy him before he destroys you. I love you, Daisy.

DAISY: Dad? Dad!

The King closes his eyes and slowly devolves into fungus which crumbles into dust. The doctors and technicians start screaming at each other to do something, but Daisy stands up, triumphant. She is dressed in her purple gown. She begins walking out of the room when THE WHOLE ROOM SHAKES! She runs to the window, and we see from the outside in...

...She's in the parallel Empire State Building, on the 102nd floor observation deck-- the King's Chambers. Down below, there's smoke rising from the ground. Bombs are going off across the city, which is still in a sort of chaos now that Koopa's reign of terror is over. Back inside, she begins walking towards the elevator, and an EXPLOSION goes off, catching her dress on fire. She rolls around on the ground until it goes out and then gets up. A DEAD SOLDIER on the ground with a pair of white pants and a BELT OF BONZAI BILLS around his chest lies before her. She field strips him and suits up in the pants and takes his ammo belt and his DEVO GUN. She gets in the elevator and closes the door...

The TITLE comes FLYING AT US:

"THE MUSHROOM KINGDOM: SUPER MARIO BROS. 2"
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

"Banzai Bills?" Are these an improvement over the usual Bullet Bills? (And yes, "Banzai" is the word you're looking for, like "Buckaroo Banzai." )

Banzai Bills are smaller Bullet Bills.

Banzai Bills are bigger then Bullet Bills.

I read that sea turtles navigate a thousand miles on instinct. Not in New York traffic they don't.

Serum, you're absolutely brilliant. Phlibbit and I have worked on a continuation of the film in our privates discussions that incorporates just about the same elements that you have. You're really building excitement in the most logical way possible. Great minds (and true fans) think alike. :P

Really? Oh my, how peculiar. A simple metamorphosis, it would seem. A most agreeable transmogrification. But seriously, what have you come up with that parallels mine? I'm curious. Because I'm not really sure where I'm going with this, at the moment.

Mostly just the idea of the King reverting back to his fungal state, though we execute it much more differently. It's still nice to see that you're on the same track as us. :)

Yeah, that was one of the things that never sat well with me. After being fungus for so long, it would probably be near-impossible to maintain a human form even after re-evolution.

No, no, we're talking about the ones that power the Stomper Boots. I was thinking that a Banzai Bill gave a higher jump boost or was in some ways more powerful.

Maybe there should be a multicolored line of 'Bills, with each color indicating how much "punch" it packs (and how much it costs)!

This is exactly the case in some of the early scripts. They even went so far as to make different colored Bills!

And I haven't even read any of the earlier scripts. I'm beginning to think that I may be a latent clairvoyant in some ways. Must get myself tested...

I highly recommend checking out the early scripts. Not only are they fascinating reads, but each heavily influenced Serum's own screenplay in their own way.

Yeah, of course more than half of my initial draft of the fan-screenplay took place in New York. If they gave me the money to make the movie it would be three hours and fifty minutes with a 60s style intermission in the middle... it would be awesome though.

I'm sure that'd be a good movie, but not a very good Super Mario Bros. movie. :P

As Hitchcock (or someone) once said, "The average length of a motion picture should be equal to the endurance of the average human bladder."
