A place for those who "Trust the Fungus"

BLACK SCREEN
So my friend who wrote the new secret project animation, sent me this Mario script. I told him I know people would love this, so he said to share it with you guys. It reminds me of the original drafts and newer drafts to the movie, he says he doesn't remember much of the real movie other than it was very bizarre. So I hope you guys enjoy it.

MALE VOICE
(angry)
You idiot! You were supposed to be here
an hour ago! I need those pipes fixed
now!

EXT. SEEDY MOTEL - DAY

Mario walks toward the motel, plunger in hand. The angry OWNER
hovers around him.

OWNER
You know why I haven't fired you yet?
Out of respect for your father.

Mario walks on, taking the Owner's insults.

EXT. CEMETERY - DAY

Mario stands in front of a grave, head sunk down.

OWNER(V.O.)
If he could seen you now.

INT. DIRTY BATHROOM - DAY

Mario stands before a disgusting toilet. He frowns, completely
discontent with his situation.

OWNER(V.O.)(CONT'D)

A nobody. Unclogging crappers to make a
few coins.

EXT. ATM - DAY

Mario stands at an ATM, punching buttons.
The ATM reads "Insufficient Funds" "Zero Coins"

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Mario sits propped up in his bed, flipping through channels.

OWNER(V.O.) (CONT'D)
He would be so...

INT. CRAPPY APARTMENT - NIGHT

Mario sits, eating alone. He lets out a sigh of disappointment.

OWNER(V.O.) (CONT'D)
embarrassed.

EXT. CITY. SIDEWALK - DAY

Mario walks, head slumped.

MARIO (V.O.)
I had nothing. I cared about nothing.

He walks toward a MAN (BOWSER) and a WOMAN (PEACH) who are
arguing. The woman holds a stack of files.

Angry, Bowser walks away, knocking into the Peach with his
shoulder.

The Peach drops her files.
Mario stops, bends down.

MARIO
(courteous)
Oh let me get that.

Peach bends down pick up the mess.

The two share a look. They smile at one and other.

INT. DEN - NIGHT

MARIO (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Then I met her.

Mario stands in the room talking to the back of a leather chair
where a mysterious MAN who sits facing the fireplace.

EXT. SIDEWALK - DAY

MARIO
You gotta name princess?

PEACH
Peach.

EXT. PARK - DAY
Mario and Peach sit on a picnic blanket. Peach rests her head
on Mario's shoulder.

MARIO
Why do you let that guy push you around?

EXT. STREET - DAY
Bowser and Peach argue. Bowser pushes Peach.

INT. BOWSER'S CAR - DAY
Bowser, dressed in nice suit, sits in the back seat, talking on
a cell phone.

PEACH (V.O.)
Bowser is a powerful man.

EXT. STREET - DAY
A GOOMBA walks up to Bowser's car. The window rolls down. The
Goomba hands Bowser a question mark box.

PEACH (V.O.) (CONT'D)
He's the Kingpin of the Koopa empire.
He controls every illegal mushroom sale
in the city.

INT. WAREHOUSE - DAY
Bowser hits a man tied to a chair.

PEACH (V.O.) (CONT'D)
He isn't someone you want to upset.

INT. BOWSER'S CAR - DAY
Bowser opens the box to reveal a pile of coins. There is an
envelope inside. He opens it and pulls out pictures of spy
photos taken of Mario and Peach at the park. Bower's clenches
his fist tight.

MARIO (V.O.)
She was the only woman I ever cared
about.

EXT. DARK ALLY - NIGHT
Two Goombas grab Peach and drag her way.
One holds Mario back. Mario struggles to get free. He reaches
his hand out toward her. She struggles, reaching her hand
toward his.

MARIO (V.O.)(CONT'D)
And they took her away.

MARIO
NOOO!

A GOOMBA slams Mario against a wall. He holds him by his
collar.

GOOMBA
You think this is a game? You mess with
Koopa and it's game over!

The Goomba punches Mario in the guy. Mario drops to the ground.

INT. DEN - NIGHT

MARIO
I'm going to get Peach back.

EXT. WAREHOUSE - DAY
Mario fights three Goombas at once.

MARIO (V.O.)
I don't care if I have to take Bowser's
whole operation apart block by block.

INT. DEN - NIGHT

MAN IN CHAIR
You plan on doing that with your bare
hands?

INT. SHACK - DAY

Mario talks to TOAD who is wearing a white turban with red dots
on it.

Toad leads Mario to a table with mushrooms, a fire plant, and a
star on it.

TOAD
Your father created everything you see
before you. He was quite the genius.
(motions to the mushrooms)
Ingestion of these mushrooms will grant
you the strength of two men.
(motions to the mushrooms)
A genetically enhanced plant for
pyro-kinetic abilities.
(motions to the flashing star)
And this, for a short time, will make
you invulnerable.

Mario reaches out to touch it.
Toad smacks his head away.

TOAD (CONT'D)
Don't touch it. Not until you
absolutely need it.

MARIO
(motions to something O.S.)
What's that?

It's a white egg with green spots.

TOAD
That? You wouldn't be interested in
that.

INT. WAREHOUSE - NIGHT

A Goomba looks around. Other Goombas are strewn around
unconscious.

CLANK.

GOOMBA
Who is it? Who's there?

Mario appears from the darkness.

MARIO
It's me, Mario.

Mario decks the Goomba.

INT. SHACK - DAY

TOAD
How do you plan to get to Bowser?

Mario spreads out a blueprint of pipe routs. Mario traces a
rout with his finger.

MARIO
These pipes. They can take me right too
him.

INT. DEN - NIGHT

MARIO
I can't do this alone.

MAN IN CHAIR
Why did you come to me?

MARIO
Because you're my brother.

The man int he chair sits forward into the light, revealing that
he is Luigi.

INT. BOWER'S OFFICE - NIGHT

BOWSER
25,000 coins to the man who brings me
the plumber!

INT. DEN - NIGHT

LUIGI
We haven't spoken in years and now you
come to me...to help you with this
suicide mission? You are no brother to
me.

Mario stomps out of the room.

INT. MARIO'S APARTMENT

Mario suits up in his gear.

He buttons his overalls. Puts on his gloves. Spray paints an M
on his hat. Puts his hat on.

MARIO (V.O.)
To take on Koopa and his goons. I need
to become more than a plumber. I need to
become a symbol. An Icon. Something
the people of this city can stand
behind.

EXT. MOUTH OF A LARGE PIPE

Mario stands before the opening of a large tunnel. He looks
into the darkness.

MARIO (V.O.)
I realize now what it takes to get the
thing you want most. You have to
fight. You have to be willing to
sacrifice everything. To be stronger
than you ever though possible. To step
into the unknown and face whatever
obstetrical stand in your path.

Mario enters the tunnel.

INT. BOWSERS MANSION - NIGHT

Mario battles several Goombas. He takes the final one down only
to look up and see an army of more Goombas ahead of him.
Mario reaches into his pocket, but pulls out nothing. He looks
confused. He looks across the room to see the star lying on the
ground.
A door bursts open. The dust clears revealing Luigi standing in
the doorway, holding the star.

LUIGI
Looks like you could use some help,
brother.

MARIO (V.O.) (CONT'D)
I'm a nobody no longer.

Luigi throws Mario the star. Mario jumps, reaches out, and
grabs it mid-air.

A flash whites out the screen.

MARIO (V.O.) (CONT'D)
I. Am. Mario.

The screen reads "This Summer"

INT. BOWER'S MANSION - NIGHT

The Mario and Luigi stand back to back, ready to battle the
Goombas.

The screen reads "Mario Begins"

I like the overall concept but feel that the explicit references to the games in terms of physical coins (rather than just money slang) and items take it too far. This would work well with only a a few references to the games.

I did really like the idea of Bowser being an abusive boyfriend. That really suits the character and provides a good explanation for his acts against Peach and Mario.
