Nutty's silly art

So I started this trend like just last night at 11 pm of redrawing stuff from the movie, and this is what's happened so far.

Image

I run an Ask Mario art blog on tumblr, so I've had a set style and lots of practice for drawing the bros for a while now, but I'm doing my best to adapt to the style I'm used to with a bit more grittiness mixed in. I definitely want to do some more so stayed tuned I s'pose!

Love it! The Fungus is actually very popular with us in the community since it's just such a bizarre, creative concept.

Looking forward to seeing anything else from the movie you might draw, either in your own style or something closer to the film's realism.

I'm really digging this art style. The film lends itself surprisingly well to more "game-like" interpretations. Can't wait to see more!

Thanks guys! I just finished this one!

Gotta warn you, I'm in the middle of trying new things to keep mah stuff fresh, so I went with a "fake screencap" look with this one.

We were watching the film today and I saw this shot and thought 'wow that is a neat shot i want to replicate that shot' so I did. :B

Making it look like a fake screenshot is just genius.

The only problem is that I want to see that whole scene animated :)

But yeah, there are lots of really interesting shots like that in the film! I love this artwork!

Wow, that is amazingly well done. I find it remarkable just how well you captured the ethereal feel to the Fungus, which is never more apparent then when they offer a close-up on the individual spores.

I also have to agree with Phlibbit that a fully animated scene would be very cool to see. People have attempted before to marry the themes and elements of the film with the game's visual sensibility, but I don't feel that any of them have matched what you have.

Whoa! It's like a screenshot from an actual anime! That's awesome! Was it made all by yourself? That picture is so beautifully and proffessionally drawn!

Weeeeehhhhh thank you!! And yes I did!

I'm in Homestuck too, and with the hiatus everyone's been making fake anime screenshots to pass the time because hahaha that fandom is super weird. Anyway, that's where I got the idea to give that style a shot, so I roughly followed this tutorial.

I say roughly because I only have Photoshop Elements 8 so I don't have all the features she has, but there's always more than one way to do certain effects in PS.

The very, VERY best part about your style is that, even though you're hewing more towards the look of the game, I can still imagine Bob and John's voices coming out of the characters' mouths. It's decidedly very strange, but awesome.

I really love this artwork! I think it's a great mix between the style of the video games and the movie. Very interesting. Good job!

Very cute art! I love the one of Luigi talking to the de-evolved king best - adorable! :D

How bout a picture of the scene where Koopa gives a Reason You Suck speech to the fungus king. I'd love to see what you could with Koopa!

The great thing about the movie is how visually appealing it is; it just inspires you with its sets, costumes and creatures. Some of the best fan art for any film that I've seen has come from this one, especially considering how poor its popular image is!

I think seeing Koopa in your style would be a great thing, so my personal suggestion would be another fake screencap of the Mario vs. Koopa standoff on the bridge, which you could easily make seem much more grandiose if it were set on the Brooklyn Bridge as originally intended.

Koopa, eh?

Hehehe... I'll have to toy with his design. Maybe making it halfway between humanoid and dinosaur; he DID get de-evolved just a LIIIIIITLE bit in the devo chamber when the bros got away, after all.

Check our our Koopa > Creatures page on the site for behind-the-scenes stills of each of the four stages; perhaps you'll find inspiration there.

Everyone commissons nutty to do a full animated version. TAKE ALL OF THE MONEY. That would be way to much of a task for just one person. Yet I love the little animted video you did.

You talking about the Koo Koo Kanga Roo music video I did?

If it is thank you aaaaaa. That took me four months to do by myself though. |D

It's cool to see that you actually do animate to some extent. I would be fully willing to commission an animated version of the movie, or even just an inspired short, if it wasn't such a demanding/time-consuming process. :P

I totally agree--this artwork is fantastic! This style really captures both the film's sensibility with video game proportions. I always enjoy different interpretations of Koopa and you've got this great balance between what we saw in the film with hints of the structure of Bowser's face from the games.

The only problem is that I keep wanting to see an animated scene :)

Even just seeing them on a much more open terrain really does a lot to make that scene so much more lively. So much of the film is just static locations, so opening up the climax would have done a lot.

Reading your Tumblr I see that someone suggested doing the Big Bertha dance scene; I wholeheartedly agree! Bertha is just such a great character despite her relatively brief screentime, especially since her costume is actually really the only one of its kind in the film. She'd be fun to draw! :P

I dunno, something looks off about Koopa. I suppose it's just me, as I'm so used to seeing him with that long, menacing face.

Hey its not just you. Indeed its very good work, but for some reason I just see Chucky of Childs Play as Koopas face.

I think Phlibbit really hit the nail on the head here in interpreting Koopa's odd facial structure as an attempt to humanize Bowser's permanently distorted grin, but it's really nutty's interpretation and her own explanation to give. :P

Oh don't worry 'bout it! Believe me, it was hard ENOUGH just trying to figure out how to merge the two styles together. Just knowing I was at least a LITTLE bit successful is good enough for me, and as always, everyone's got their own interpretations!

Wow, these are really good!

I wonder what Lena would've looked like if she'd been more outwardly reptilian. Though she certainly ACTS it. XD

These drawings are AWESOME! I think the Anime one with the mushroom on the fungus where Mario looks at it is my favorite on the second drawing.

IF I COULD REQUEST can you re-draw the scene where Leena says to Spike and Iggy "Hello morons" and Iggy and Spike wave and say say "hello!"

THAT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE SCENES LOL.

These are really cool man! I love them.

Just an idea for another one, why not the scene where Mario gets punched in the face from Big Bertha at the Boom Boom Bar

I envy your art capabilities. This are so amazing! I would love to see you do a comic strip of a scene from the movie. You certainly are very talented, can't wait to see more!

Simply awesome, you have a Don Bluth thing going on, here.

This reminds me of the work of someone I know, tell me, are you familiar with a Deviant Art user by the name of MorgansCross?

These are really great. I like the cartoon, kind of glowing effect. It's cool to cartoon version of the scenes from the movie.
