I've seen the Italian cut and I'm actually not much of a fan of how abruptly it ends. I thought they would've done it after Mario and Luigi returned home, just getting rid of the cliffhanger from that point, but it's too soon for my tastes. There's no resolution to Luigi's and Daisy's characters.

The only thing I like about it is the end credits, themselves, having a recap video in the logo. I could recreate that using the Mario "M" from the poster rather than the cartoony logo they made.

I feel the abrupt ending is a much better resolution of Luigi and Daisy's relationship, actually. The viewer is just left to assume that they remained together. They wouldn't need a reunion through a sequel hook because of that.

The second edit has finally been completed, just adding a finishing touch, now that I know that a clean, high-quality version of the Plumber Rap from the Mario Bros. Super Show exists, haha. I'm also throwing in an extra easter egg video for you guys that I'll also post up here. You can thank Redstar for his mentioning of the Italian version for this. ;)

The FINALIZED version of the film is rendering and exporting as we speak. In celebration, I give you this little extra easter egg: A shot-for-shot remake of the Italian version credits, complete with goofy Mario logo, clip show recap, and Joe Satriani's "Speed of Light." Enjoy, everybody. I know I did.

Very happy to see this project reach completion! It's also nice to know that my suggestion was taken to heart. The Italian cut really did something great with the credits, so seeing them recreated is a real treat.

I'm looking forward to watching the new cut and reading the updated cutlist!

I wasn't familiar with the Italian cut before, but I have to say it does offer a good template for an improved version of the film. Really great work.

Agreed. Joe Satriani's "Speed of Light," paired with a visual recap of the Mario Bros. adventure is just a more spirited way to cap the film off. I really like how you've incorporated that into your new cut.

Two cuts will soon be available, with a third coming on the way. The finalized version of my original edit will be up soon, and a second version -- with the Italian version ending -- will also be available if anyone prefers that. The third I mentioned will be an edit that only features the cuts and edits made, with no sound effects or new music cues added. I've jokingly dubbed this third cut as the "purist version."

Re: NEW! Super Mario Bros. - The 20th Anniversary Re-edit

Postby Happy Russia » Mon Mar 18, 2013 12:06 am

I'm having a few technical issues with iMovie; specifically, some exporting issues dealing with the edited material. Certain sound cues are missing entirely and I've had to go back a few times and re-export more than once tonight. However, here's the new list of changes, some of which I'm sure you'll agree with.

1.) Opening "dinosaur" sequence is still absent. New title sequence, with lead cast names, created from parts of the original theatrical trailer.

2.) New music added to several scenes:

- Orchestrated version of the classic Mario theme inserted in the, "Mario Bros. Plumbing, no leak too small!" scene.
- Underground theme inserted briefly into Mario & Luigi's infiltration of Koopa's Tower / "plumber's nightmare," scene.
- Orchestrated version of the "Level Complete fanfare" from original SMB replaces Alan Silvestri's original motif when we see Mario & Luigi in their outfits for the first time in the elevator.
- Heroic fanfare from Super Smash Bros. inserted into the Goomba barracks rescue when Mario swings from the light and kicks the Goomba.
- Orchestrated, edited version of "Peach's Castle," (arranged Mario theme) from Super Smash Bros. Melee replaces Alan Silvestri's score in the celebration scene after Koopa's death.
- Entire end credits are re-scored featuring an arranged version of the Mario theme, the Mario rap from The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, "The Grand Parade" from Super Mario World, and the Super Smash Bros. Melee theme as the closing.

3.) Conversation between Luigi & Daisy, after dinner, shortened by a few minutes. Removes odd dialogue.

4.) "Mario Mario, Luigi Mario," scene in police station edited, shortened.

5.) Toad's de-evolution scene re-edited, rearranged.

6.) Prison escape sequence shortened and re-edited. Police car chase shortened and re-edited, infamous "no brakes" line removed.

7.) Mud bath scene shortened, unnecessary lines removed. Lena & Daisy scene re-edited to include prologue with Daisy's mother as a flashback of how she died.

8.) Childish insults between Luigi, Iggy & Spike removed to keep expository dialogue flowing.

9.) Iggy & Spike's de-evolution scene re-edited to create a bait-and-switch.

11.) All occurrences of "Koopa Pizza" joke completely removed.

14.) "Super Koopa Cousins" scene inserted between credits instead of at the very end.

15.) New sound effects:

- Stomp sound effect added to Mario kicking Goomba over during barracks scene.
- Koopa shell kick sound effects added to falling Goombas punched by Koopa.
- New sound effects for Devo Gun discharges.
- Item box growing sound added when Koopa fires at the mushroom, causing it to grow.
- Bob-Omb jibber from Super Mario 64 added before detonation.
- Bowser roars from Mario Kart 64, as well as new sound effects added to final Koopa battle.

There are far less sound effects in this version. Those that remain, I feel, give a bit of an "easter egg" feeling to them. They're sporadically spread throughout the film, giving the viewer a sense of pleasant surprise when they hear the sound. Oh, and just one more thing to add to the list of changes....

16.) FIRST VERSE OF MOJO NIXON'S ANTI-KOOPA SONG DEMO INSERTED INTO THE FILM AND BLENDED INTO HIS INTRODUCTORY SCENE.
"Hey! You lookin' for this?"
"Give it to me."
"BAH-HAHA!"

"Monkey!"

As one of the preeminent caretakers of the film and its community, I have just the position to state without any reservation that this is the definitive cut of the film. You've done a marked job at improving what has for so long needed improvement.

Your changes are often subtle, but they do much for repositioning the pacing and tone of the film in a way that makes it a much more enjoyable watch. No longer do we have to endure the animated prologue or the pizza jokes, which weighed the film down with cheese even too great for the '90s. Now we can focus on the fun of the adventure.

I'm very glad that you were much more judicious in your use of the game's sound effects in this cut. What you've used now only serve to enhance the aesthetic of the parallel world. The Bob-Omb jibberish fit perfectly while Bowser's roar actually made Koopa's demise much creepier. I can only imagine how they would sound if featured on the big screen with sound as originally intended. :P

Really, good job. I'm amazed at what you've done for both the film and us.

Will you be submitting one or all of these cuts to the Fan Edit website? Your changes are enough for it to be a perfect example for the fan editing community of what the film could be.

I honestly don't know what to say about all this praise. I feel like it's undue, especially considering that I began this fan-edit as just a little pet project. Then I discovered this site, read up on all the behind-the-scenes info, checked out all the great pics, read every interview, every special article you have on here, and then I realized that this site gave me a great amount of help in completing this. From the trailer footage, to images, to just everything! I can't thank everybody here enough for your support and criticisms.

To say that this is the definitive cut... that's beyond any sort of praise I expected to hear. I intended this cut to be a definitive cut for myself, and my friends who had disappointing memories of this movie during our childhood. To hear that from you, Redstar, being a custodian of this community, and of the history of this movie, is paramount. To get the kind of praise my fellow board members here have given me, it causes me to grin from ear-to-ear every time I check up on this thread. When I read the criticisms, I took them to heart, and I built upon them.

So to everyone who was a detractor of my project, I thank you guys for letting me know what the hell to take out of my movie. 'Cause, yeah, some of those sound effects got old real fast, and yeah, I understand how it's sacrilegious. I feel the same about George Lucas every time he touches Star Wars, and manages to make it worse every time.

If you guys wanna stick around for more of my shenanigans, I'm currently working on my own "making of" featurette, going through some of the steps I took in making the movie. It'll include side-by-side comparisons, a quick history of the Mario Bros. movie, and of course, why I wanted to do this. It'll be chock-full of wonderful Mario visuals, classic gameplay footage, sound effects, and music. The "purist" cut will also be coming to YouTube shortly. This "purist cut" will have no sound effects or music inserted, only the original sound tracks.

Redstar, if you feel like linking my final cut on the home page, instead of the previous cut, it'd be appreciated, and hopefully it'll get as many -- if not more! -- views and likes. Once again, thank you everybody. Thanks for the praise, the support, the criticisms, thanks for trusting me and the fungus!

I'm loving it so far. It's a streamlined version of the film that was desperately needed. It had too much extraneous material before which really dragged the pacing. You've exceeded expectations in improving it.

My only nitpick is Koopa's fall into the bucket. I'm surprised you kept that shot of him falling that doesn't line up with the bucket at all. Is there a reason?

I thought that the last shot of him actually dropping into it was more detrimental than his ascent and subsequence descent. It was just a bit of an editing gaffe, both back in the day, and today. Why I kept it... I have no idea, really. I felt like him actually falling into the bucket was in need of fixing rather than the shot you mention.

I'm glad our input could be so well received by you, Gary. This was definitely one of the best things to come out of this anniversary year alongside marioblaster's "Papercut 2" fan film. Being able to show our support and interest was an absolute privilege.

I can only reiterate how great it's been to be a part of the process. And like Metroidan, it would be cool to see these cuts submitted to the Fan Edit site. More people should be able to enjoy it!

I can understand that. It's probably one of those scenes that you can't improve simply be removing shots; rather, you need to insert new ones to work with the flow of pacing and soundtrack. It's still cool that you've done so much else with the film.

So, I tried watching the new version of the recut, but I just can't make it through it YET.

Why?

Because the dang intro is just SO GOOD. Using the film's score--with subtle yet appropriate SMB game sounds mixed in--over the repurposed trailer title cards works BRILLIANTLY. It just starts the film off on this adventurous, upbeat tone. It's infectious. I love the prologue with Daisy's mother, but the more I see the film this way the more I like it. I feel so sacrilegious. And yeah, I know it was in the first pas on this cut, but after you removed the Martinet pre-intro with the Nintendo logo that was out of place, I really got stuck on this much better intro.

And squeezing in that first verse of Mojo's Anti-Koopa song is great :)

I'm not so sure; iMovie automatically degrades the picture quality of whatever's imported into it.

It still has better editing tools than Windows Movie Maker, which makes everything look like it was edited by a middle school student syncing Death Cab for Cutie songs to Trigun.

I use Final Cut Pro X.

Well, back in the "Wild West" days of the internet (circa 2004-2009) people made these "AMV" (Anime Music Videos) things on Windows Movie Maker and polluted every corner of YouTube with them. Unfortunately, some of it still survives to this day, albeit thankfully not nearly as much.

If anyone cares, heh, I've created this mock-theatrical poster. I'd like to consider this the poster I'd wanna see outside a movie theater if this were ever to release. I do these kind of posters a lot, and I'm very much influenced by Drew Struzan's style.

I was lucky enough to find good enough quality pics from here to put together into this poster. If you have a deviantart, it'd be awful swell of you to fave it.

I like it, although several of the names under the credits are misspelled:

"Richard Eson" should be "Richard Edson"

"Jake Roberts" should be "Jake Eberts"

"Parker Bennet" should be "Parker Bennett"

and "Ad Solomon" should be "Ed Solomon"

Oh, okay. I'm glad to know you're not an incompetent speller! :P

It's a nice poster. Combines some of the best images to represent the film, although I'm more a fan of simplistic and minimalist pieces. The original poster will always be best to me because it didn't oversaturate itself.

I like the original one as well. But I'm a sucker for colorful, collage-esque film posters, I felt that it would fit the bright, adventurous spirit, while remaining kinda creepy with the dino-Koopa in the background. Also, I'm a grammar Nazi, I'd hate myself for misspelling anyone's name, let alone any basic words, haha.

I really love this edit! :D

However, I wish I had been able to watch the earlier version with more of the actual mario game sound effects & mario game music put into the film, as I just learned about the edit today, and I missed that version! I actually have always wanted to hear more of the mario sound effects / music put into the film. I guess I'm alone on that. XD Now only a very few remain in the edit. :(

One other thing that I've always thought would be a nice touch, would be to edit the plain looking [?] block it shows briefly in the Police Car startup computer screen into the actual flashing [?] block from the game.

This is the first cut of the movie -- it has more sound effects added in.

Hey, everyone. Well, it's been a while since the last update, and the movie's been doing well on YouTube (16, 372 views!? CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?). Upon the acquisition of better editing software, Final Cut Pro X, I have some pretty Earth-shattering news. Or... parallel dimension-shattering news, however you wanna take it. NEW! Super Mario Bros. will have a final, FINAL cut, with the end result showcasing a pristine picture quality, as seen on the Swedish DVD release. All the changes you've come to love, and hate, will still remain. Like before, however, I'm open to any and all ideas! Legitimate ideas, mind you, because the cut is pretty darn good the way it is, heh.

I look forward to hearing from everyone!
