I just wanted to drop in and show off a project that I just recently finished... on the 15th of March no less.
It's been a very long time coming...over 2 years in fact...but it’s finally done. I have mentioned this project before in passing… HERE… and HERE... but now I am finally 100% finished with it. Behold!
PAPERCUT 2 by Studio Sandman
“PAPERCUT 2â€
Approx. 135 mins
UNRATED
Tagline...“NO MOAR GAMESâ€
PAPERCUT 2 is an original story following two young lovers while paying homage to and parodying pop culture, video games, and 80's movies. Made by fans, for fans!
Shooting weekend to weekend and paycheck to paycheck, I shot this film over the course of 2 years. I did everything on this project, I made all the props, costumes, did all the location scouting, set construction, editing, directing, SFX, sound editing… I pretty much did everything there was to do on this movie.
I’ve worked with over 100+ cast and crew from around the country and have worked with several local and national Hollywood talent. Cast and crew who have worked on: Ghostbusters, Transformers 3, Inspectres, Matt Forbecks Brave New World, Traffic, Super Mario Bros, Evil Dead, Sonic the Hedgehog, Gearbox Software’s Duke Nukem, Captain America, Thor, Overtime, The Tomb, Fire From Below, Camel Spiders, America's Next Top Model, and more…all worked on my movie.
Despite being virtually broke throughout the 2 year production shoot, I was able to shoot a 2 hour long feature film completely out of pocket. I ended up buying 5 vehicles for this movie after all was said and done...two of them having complete restorations...
Lots of blood, sweat and tears went into making Papercut 2 and it shows on the final product.
I hope everyone here likes what they see and looks forward to the movie’s premiere. Please let me know what you think about it…the movie, trailer, plot points, casting, SFX…etc.
I’d love to hear any and all feedback on this movie project.
I hope that everyone is as excited for the movie as I am, it’s really gonna be awesome.
I'm glad to finally see this project completed! We've been anticipating it for a very, very long time. Despite the delays we always held hope that the finished product would be an amazing homage to us fans.
If you'd like, you can write a quick blurb about the project and its relation to the Super Mario Bros. film for use in a site update. Just post it here or PM me privately and I'll get it up!

Yep...no donations, no kickstarter (didn't exist when first started shooting), no sponsorships...nothing. Just shooting weekend to weekend and paycheck to paycheck, the only way I knew how to do it. Hence the reason why it took soooooo long to complete the movie...2 years...I just didn't have the money to shoot most days and had to wait until the next paycheck to go to set. You have to be very disciplined, focused, and dedicated for such an approach to filming.

Yeah, that would be awesome, I sent both you and Ryan an email about this...let me know what you need to make it happen and I can post about it and link it back to my movie website.

Very cool. I checked out your old thread and must say that I love the props. Hopefully you were able to utilize them well in the SMB segment.

Would this technically count as the first fan film for the movie?

All those props were made ESPECIALLY for the movie. All props were used in the movie except my thwomp boots...never got those to look right...

I'm okay with that...haha...

Is Mojo voicing Toad or is he actually in the film? I LOVED the interview with your Mario! He looks the part and seems like he brought a lot of heart to the role. Can't wait to see the whole film.

YES. Mojo is in the film and he is voicing Toad! But that is not the only SMB surprise in store for the film, everyone will just have to wait and see the final product to catch all the other SMB movie references and homages! Mojo is the tip of the iceburg...
Phlibbit wrote:I LOVED the interview with your Mario! He looks the part and seems like he brought a lot of heart to the role.
Both he and Luigi (Clint Cloys) nailed their parts perfectly...Clint does alot of improv comedy in the movie and it's hilarious! Both Mario and Luigi are PERFECT SMB movie versions of the famous plumbers. I have an actor interview with Kristine Farley (Daisy) and Clint to upload soon so you should be able to watch them as well.
Phlibbit wrote:Can't wait to see the whole film.
I can't wait either...haha. To be able to sit down in the audience and just enjoy the movie and not stress over it would be an amazing feeling. It's a long time coming and would be great to see it play out.
Well, thats all for now, until next update. If anyone is interested in comic books, posters or action figures from the movie...please visit my store and pick up some PC2 goodies...support indie films!!

Bryan, we are so proud of you. This project started out small and took years to come together, but we always supported you and knew something special would come of it. You cannot believe how happy it makes me knowing that you could honor our favorite film by including characters and concepts from it. While you made it your own, this still represents the very first fan film for Super Mario Bros. That makes it special in a way only us fans can appreciate.
I am very much looking forward to the film's release. You put your heart and soul into it; the least we can do is watch it.

Well, congratulations-- as one filmmaker to another. Everyone starts somewhere-- David Lynch paid for his first movie Eraserhead out of pocket and it took him more than ten years to finish it-- he shot a little bit of it every month or so on and off between 1967 and 1978-- and now it's one of the biggest cult films of all time.
In this-- digital age, it's easier for people like us to make a name for ourselves, meaning that the future of creativity lies in our hands-- it's up to the people who use nothing but home video recorders and basic computer editing software to bring originality back to the world of cinema, and I see that you've done your part in helping to do that. Nicely done.

Thanks for the kind words and support for my movie, it means alot.
It was working with everyone here on the SMB forum and reading the exclusive interviews which spawned the idea of getting Mojo Nixon for a role. If you guys haven't interviewed him and broke the ice, I never would have contacted him. It's so amazing to work in such a SMB 93 homage to my movie with ACTUAL cast from the SMB 93 film.
And as for whole...out of pocket thing...I never plan to do that again any time soon. Haha. I had to given my circumstance and standing within the film world. I first tried to get a loan for $300 bucks to get some props and was turned down...before I started filming. Then near the end of filming, I was able to get a loan for the 04 Escalade EXT seen in the trailer...that was my truck! Haha. I've come such a long way from the very bottom of the barrel to rising to the top. Everything has changed and I hope they continue to change for the better.
With this movie done, it acts like a portfolio and resume piece...I can now take this movie to other producers, directors, and actors and say...look, this is what I did by myself on no budget...lets work together and get a budget and we can make magic. If nothing else, this movie is simply a portfolio piece...I don't expect it to be picked up by anyone or shown outside of comic cons and whatnot...it would be awesome otherwise...but I am also very realistic...and humble.
I'd like to thank god that I got this far...I wouldn't have finished the movie without his help...2012 (the last year of shooting) was really rough on me. Physically, mentally, and Spiritually. I'm very thankful for all the support given to me by my family and friends.
With that said...here is another PAPERCUT 2 CAST & CREW INTERVIEW on my movie. It's Kayla Gill!
Both Kayla and I have worked with the same director on other projects for the SyFy channel. Her last movie was Camel Spiders.
It was a real pleasure working with her and I look forward to uploading further cast and crew interviews from the movie.
Until next update! All the best!

There aren't enough tribute films like this that aren't stupid Hollywood parody films, i.e. the "Scary Movie" series and others like it. This just feels like a wonderful, heart-felt love letter to the things that made up our childhoods. I'm really looking forward to seeing Mojo Nixon in this film, I'm downright excited! Your prop design is excellent, too. I wish I knew how to sew, I'd make myself a Mario jumpsuit. How much for one, eh?

Yes, the SMB elements in the PC2 homage is an honest tribute to the movie. It isn't making fun of the actors or sets or plots from the movie, it's an honest to goodness faithful homage to SMB and is a great parody and spoof in its own right.

And here is LUIGI!!! Clint Cloys!
This guy is amazing...a natural funny man and a Bill Murray like actor. Once who can read the script once and take it from there in new and funnier directions. Clint was a real pleasure to work with! His scenes are insanely funny!! Haha. You have been warned!

BUMP FOR UPDATES
Hey everyone...it's been awhile since I last updated the movie topic and I have some cool news to share!
PAPERCUT 2 PREMIERES THIS MONTH! MAY 31st and JUNE 1st in Stanford, KY!
It's premiering at my old high school. Back to where I first got the idea to make movies, after working in my media production class as a senior.
I've come full circle...
Here are some snapshots of events and promotions that I have done recently for the movie.
I had a small public screening at a film school in Kentucky for the movie. About 20 film and art students showed up to watch the film.
I was on a local radio station and did an interview about the movie. The DJ himself plays a villain in the movie.
I recently did two interviews for 2 papers...one the local paper and another one for a video game magazine.
But the most recent and coolest update yet...is the release of my short film PAPERCUT 2: CHUCK's NEW JOB
"Chuck's New Job" was shot in 3 days and took about a month to edit. The music was finished in a few weeks and features some prominent members of the GB community. Jesse Sosa and Ian McIantosh, who worked on the GB video game for the XBOX and PS3, also appear in the PAPERCUT 2 COMIC BOOK.
"Chuck's New Job" just gives you a small sample of what to expect if you watch the full PAPERCUT 2 movie.
If you are in central Kentucky next week I highly encourage you to come out and see the film. I'm just a local director who shot this movie entirely out of pocket and over the course of 2 years. Lots of love and care was put into the script and if anyone can come out and see it, you won't be disappointed.
That's really good. I really like it and can't wait to see the real Papercut 2!!

I understand Kentucky is too far for most to see the movie's premiere in the Bluegrass State...so I have a few movie updates to tide people over until they can get a chance to see the movie...
...like this!
First 4mins of PAPERCUT 2 Online...
After the premiere I'll be sure to post more clips, photos, and news relating to the film. Papercut 2 premieres in 2 days...awesome, can't wait.
Until next update.

I just watched the railer really cool. That's sweet you got Tom Sullivan and the Evil Dead car. This looks like a fun movie to watch. Also is the narrator in the trailer the narrator for Dragonball Kai? If not he sounds just like him.

Yes! I'm a huge, HUGE fan of Evil Dead and I get to play a big homage to sam raimi and Bruce Campbell in my movie. Getting to work with Tom on this movie was pretty awesome, not in a million years did I think I would be able to work with the guy responsible for my favorite Horror movie!
And the VO in the trailer is none other then Jon St. John the Voice of Duke Nukem and Big the Cat! Just a huge honor to work with him as I grew up with the video game characters he created.
And now for a huge update! The PAPERCUT 2 movie premiere was a huge success! Over 100 people came out to watch the movie and attended the film's Q&A after the screening. I have new plans to showcase the movie in other venues across kentucky with will hopefully take me north of the state into Ohio and Indiana. Here are some photos from the premiere!
Not only that, but the writer, creator and editor of NINTENDO FORCE magazine showed up and presented me with Issue 3. Which contains an article on the PAPERCUT 2 movie! He signed my issue and bought a PAPERCUT 2 Comic Book!
And Here are a few clips from the movie for those who where not able to show up to the premiere!
The film's complete ending credits, which in itself is a parody of PHANTASY STAR ONLINE's original ending!
A video game homage scene parodying Penny Arcade, F@NBOY$, and PVP!
..and the moment you've been waiting for...the PAPERCUT 2 SMB movie homage scene!
Hope everyone enjoys what they see and will support the DVD once it gets ready to come out. I can't wait to show of other scenes from the movie and hope everyone here thinks the 2 year + wait time was worth it.
Until next update!

So glad to finally see the SMB Homage Scene! I loved it! The guys you picked for Mario and Luigi were terrific, and I really appreciated Mojo Nixon coming back as Toad in a clever way. Can't wait to see the whole film!

I'm glad you liked it! I also gave a few SMBmovie.com shout outs in the special thanks credits, as i couldn't have done this without the awesome resources this site provides.
Aside from working with Mojo, I just loved the fact that I was able to talk with Blake and get the 93 SMB movie "meteorite necklace" in my movie. It was a quick, 5 second homage, that I thought was worth the extra effort to get on screen. Hopefully my homage scene does justice to the SMB movie and will be the closest live action sequel to date.
I've told steven in several chats that the "Super Mario Bros 2 comic" needs to be turned into a screenplay. I would love to direct something like that and give everyone the TRUE live action SMB sequel we never got. But for now, my PC2 SMB homage scene will have to do for now.
With that said, here is another clip from the movie...another homage scene from the film...
You can't have a Mario homage scene without a SONIC homage scene! That scene features special guest, Milton Knight...who animated the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons of the early 90s.
ENJOY!

I finally got around to watching the Mario segment, which I found very well done. The way those actors portrayed the Bros, is exactly how I would imagine and always have live action or even cartoon. Good job.
