Sequel comic
Sequel comic
Im making this topic to gauge interest in a possible sequel comic. At this point, just a promotion for the site and a possible future project. I simply want to see who would be interested in a 6 page lead-in for a Super Mario Bros. 2 comic book.
Re: Sequel comic
I think a sequel comic could be very fun, especially in light of the 20th anniversary. After seeing what you've done with the Goomba barracks scene I'm more than confident that you could handle such a project.

Re: Sequel comic
We've all been waiting so long for what will never happen, so I'd be very supportive of this project. As long as the story is creative and the characters are just as we've grown to love you'll have a fan in me.

Re: Sequel comic
We've already talked about this in private, so you know you'll have our official support here at the Archive! We look forward to seeing how you execute the sequel. Could go a million ways; your direction should be one of the best.

What's this! Candid production art!

Re: Sequel comic
I see Wart! With him in the story we can rest assured the character pool will be true to the games and film.
Re: Sequel comic
Looks like I'm seeing this at just the right time. It's always fascinating to see not only who the villain is but how they're designed. Your Wart is certainly more refined than what I would have thought or what I've seen before. It's a new approach that's making me very curious as to how the story plays out. Good job.

I'd have to agree. They're a sophistication to your Wart that reminds me of the Baron Harkonnen from Dune. I can imagine him as a very intelligent chessmaster, manipulating events on many levels. Finding out just what his plan is and how it comes together will make the story for me.

Re: Sequel comic
Very exciting sneak peak, Carl. No two characters define the Super Mario Bros. 2 game more than Wart and the Shy Guy enemy, so featuring them prominently in any sequel production is an intelligent direction.
I like Wart, but the Shy Guy-model could use some work. Remember that this story takes place in a dystopian dinosaur world. Throw some spikes on the uniform and it'll be perfect.

Re: Sequel comic
My thoughts are much the same as everyone else. My interest has been piqued through your strong designs, but SMB2 was much more than just Wart and the Shy Guys. You'll need to balance the themes and characters of the game with the aesthetic of the film to make it feel like a true sequel. Remember that dark, dinosaur look and you'll hit a home run. Keep at it!

Oh! another sequel project! I totally support the people with the imagination to create comics based on the forgotten world of SMBmovie! I also liked the ShyGuy design!

Re: Sequel comic
Your previous work and concept art is really good! I'd say go for it...the more people talking about a SMB movie sequel the better...haha. Make the sequel comic and share it with us!
Re: Sequel comic
Well, I can neither confirm not deny Wart's "sophistication" at this point, suffice to say this is not his only wardrobe. As for the shy guy, this is a preliminary sketch, and I agree he could use a more dystopian accent to his appearance. More to come.

I'm pleased to hear that. One of my favorite aspects of the film were the different costumes. Lena and Koopa, for example, were just too great characters for one ensemble to fully express them. It was great to see them in different looks as the adventure developed. Knowing that you're taking care to do the same with Wart is only exciting me more!

Re: Sequel comic
What color are you going with for Wart's hair? I can't help but see him as a redhead.
Re: Sequel comic
Mario's costume gets a slight update, now equipped with a flack jacket and spare bills for his Thwomp stompers.

Re: Sequel comic
I'm loving this redesign. It's a good compromise between the film's jumpsuits and the game's coveralls. The addition of the flack jacket also inspires thoughts of a more hard-edged adventure.

Re: Sequel comic
My major concern with the original jumpsuits were how loose they were. They just sort of hung off Mario and Luigi, which I always felt detracted from the overall design.
This update is more form-fitting. I can actually take Mario seriously now, so I can only imagine Luigi will look even better.

I thought that too, but you know what else could be interesting? Sort of specially tailored jumpsuits/armor like Batman has!
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

Re: Sequel comic
Actually, what I like about this Mario jumpsuit is that it looks like it could be an addition onto the existing one.
You know, like there was a red SWAT vest or something, with extra holders for bullet bills.

A SWAT jumpsuit might be cool-- something issued by the Dinohattan Police or militia.

Re: Sequel comic
I like the design so far. It has a nice sketchy feel to it. I'm not sure why Wart would want to turn people into vegetable matter unless he likes vegetables in this version. I can't wait for more.
Isn't this a little feminine?
Yes. I know. It was my ex wife's.
But you wear this stuff?!
Yeah on an occasion we have a date.

Well he's an Eco-terrorist. The mushroom world is ravaged and devoid of resources, so he takes a more radical approach to restoring the planet.

Ah, a well intentioned extremist then. I'm liking this more and more!

Re: Sequel comic
Great work, Carl. I'm loving the direction you're taking with this project. It's certainly the most original premise I've heard of thus far for a fan sequel. Keep it up.
Also, I see that you added spikes to your Shy Guy-characters. Glad to see that!

This is awesome. I love your coloring; it really gives off a surreal and moody feel, which I think works well with this universe.

Re: Sequel comic
I see Toad has returned. As one of my favorites characters I'm very pleased, although I'm curious to know how he has reverted back to human-form! Hopefully that will be revealed in the story at some point.
Re: Sequel comic
Wart's plan is certainly an unusual take, though not one I'm entirely opposed to. Exploring the dinosaur world's lack of resources/vegetation just makes sense thematically. I think eco-terrorism could really work if you make Wart and his followers' motivation believable.
Re: Sequel comic
This is really interesting! I'm getting a big "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" vibe from this.

Re: Sequel comic
Could Wario and Waluigi be making an appreance? Maybe even Scapelli as Donkey Kong. And will Wart turn everyone into Veggies?
