“Wario & Waluigi Scapelli"
I’ve had this headcanon with the Super Mario Bros. movie that the Scapellis are stand-ins for Wario and his ilk. Figured “Wario & Waluigi Scapelli" might have fit into the film pretty well, just give ‘em suits and mullets.

That's awesome! We've always seen Scapelli as Wario as well, even despite the DK reference.

It would have been nice to see a Planet of the Apes-style ape-man in a suit as a villain for a sequel.

Ugh that would have been awesome @w@ I'm racking my brain to see if I can't come up with any other mixes of modern and movie.
Mostly I've just been on a big Tezuka and Yokoyama kick, thinking of ways to apply it to the SMB cast in a Giant Robo OVA setting.

They should have included some more major characters like Wario and Waluigi. The movie does have tons of small nods to the games, but they probably could have added a few BIG nods without overdoing it as well. Nice sketches too by the way! And honestly I never even realized the DK reference when Scapelli was transformed until it was pointed out here!
