I finally met John Leguizamo in person!

Postby Phlibbit » Wed Feb 18, 2015 12:53 am

That's right, folks. I finally met John Leguizamo--Luigi himself--in person.

Leguizamo has started doing a comedy club tour of his upcoming one-man-show, Latin History For Dummies. When developing his shows in the past, he had done it for small groups of friends and at theaters, etc. Doing this at comedy clubs is a new thing for him and I think that the show I attended at Goodnights Comedy Club in Raleigh was the first stop of his tour.

After the show was over, John made time for a meet-and-greet where he let fans get some signed merchandise and have their pictures taken with thim. John signed my Second Sight Super Mario Bros. Blu-Ray and I was able to speak to him for a few moments. I told him who I was and how much me and all the fans appreciate his support for things like his 20th Anniversary Message and participation in the Blu-Ray documentary. John noted that it was sad that we've been losing Super Mario Bros. actors in the past few years like Dennis Hopper and Bob Hoskins. I agreed with him, and told him that's exactly why the SMB Movie Archive exists--to make sure their work can be celebrated and not forgotten.

What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

Pretty cool! Did he seem interested in you and our work or at least pleasant to a fan, or did he not care? (I really can't see him being an asshole, even considering the subject-matter)

Now I just need to meet him! 25th anniversary screening, maybe?

I think he was pretty tired...it was after midnight and he had done two shows that day. But yeah--once I told him who I was he opened up a little and we got to talk for a few moments. Definitely a great interaction!

1) I can't believe I missed this all this time. That's awesome.

2) That mustache! Now THAT is a Luigi!

I'm not saying that as a matter of "Luigi has to have a mustache," I'm saying that this shows Leguizamo can clearly rock a mustache worthy of the Mario Bros.

I believe John offered to grow a mustache for the part but they said it was unnecessary. I read that somewhere in an interview with him from a long time ago. It is odd though, in a lot of his post-SMB movies he has a mustache, Spike Lee's Summer of Sam comes to mind, as does George Romero's Land of the Dead, which he incidentally starred alongside Dennis Hopper once more in.

Yeah, I think I remember reading that somewhere as well. More's the pity; again, not that I really minded him lacking it in context, but he's really proven he can rock it like a Bro.

It's never bothered me (that Luigi in the movie had no mustache) but yes, he certainly does rock the 'stash well.
