Animated "De-Vo Chamber Meltdown" Scene

Postby ultimateemail5000 » Thu Mar 26, 2009 10:51 am

Since the cassette movie tape I have has deleted scenes in the story. I was thinking of ripping the sound of the deleted scenes, and animate them. Although the voices are not done by the movie actors, but by people who read stories on tape. I would just have to edit out the narrator, and go with what the novel says. If that is possible, and if I ever have time I would enjoy doing this.

EDIT I did not realise somebody had already uploaded the cassette

Animation is a lot of work, it took me nearly 3 months to make a 10 minute cartoon by myself.

Update 4/30/09

Aight, I recieved Phlibbit's Goomba voice, and wouldn't you know it, 3 hours later the animation and video was all done. I'm uploading it on youtube as we speak, I couldn't have done it without you guys. You can find that link right, n'yah

Hope you guys like the finished version, Koopas face was changed a bit, Simon/Technician was the biggest and fastest change over I've done for a cartoon.

Update 5/02/09

Here is as promised, a behind the scenes vid of recording the lines for the Technician.

Yeah I figured the other day, the awfulness that is the cassette version should be shared with the world :D That would be cool to see the other scenes animated, though admittedly even the story tape dumbs/shortens them down from being a bit more descriptive in the novel. Maybe one day, the deleted scenes will surface, here's hoping I guess.

I wanted to ask you guys, if I were to animate the melt down scene, would it be cool if I used cartoonish designs like this?

Image

Or maybe a realastic approach like this?

Image

The easiest of course would be the first one, but I wanted to know what you guys think. BTW Mario is the only character I've actually worked on with designs.

What scene are you referring to by "meltdown" scene? And personally, I'd love to see it in the more stylized-realistic style. Yeah it'd be a lot harder, but I think it would fit so much better. :)

The scene where they de-evolve Simon into slime. I just call it the "meltdown scene" for unkown reasons, I guess it just fits it well.

ALSO, I think I'm really going to do this. I just took what was in the book and wrote out in script form. It's one page long, but one page can lead up to 2 minutes. Let's hope for the best of this, and also not get our hopes way too high, because I do have a life, and work to attend too. But I'm completely down with this, re-storyboarding it, and the designs. Sorry Phlibbit, but I think I'm going to stick with the cartoony Mario design, although Koopa and Goombas will infact still indeed look like their movie counter parts. As will the Mario's as you can see by the Mario sketch.

My idea to do this will be very simple, so the scene don't just pop up without an explination, I'm going to take the footage that happens before the scene and add it before the animation starts, and when the animation ends it will cut back to the live action footage. If you guys have ever seen the CLERKS X DVD, and the animated deleted scene, this is where I got the idea you see? Haha. Anyway, I'm going to work on this, and hopefully have some new scans in soon.

Also this is non-Mario related, but if you guys want to see my animation, here is my 10 minute cartoon 0069: Through the Light of Fire (it's seriously not porn, don't let the title misslead you), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrcI32Ta5Kk&feature=channel_page WHAT'S THAT?! You don't have 10 minutes? Well then how about 2 minutes,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GefiOSuTAm0&feature=channel_page the first 2 minute preview of 0069 that was made before the other 8 minutes. (please note the pixilation in this cartoon was purposly done like that) I just thought I'd show this off before you guys would be like, he doesn't know how to animate, he's a phony.

Anyway this post is going longer then it should, but once again I'll keep updated on it.

This may be the fastest update ever. I just finished the storyboards, and the rest of the character designs. Here is an image of the 4 characters I'll be using. I excluded Mario since he is already done.

I don't know I keep updating here with tons of stuff. Just got done creating the storyboard pages, they are a little sloppy, but the final product should look a lot better. Here's what I have, it's 3 pages long. I'm sorry I have to post them as links since I post the image on this thread, it cuts it in half for some reason.

http://chadamation.deviantart.com/art/Mario-Bros-Deleted-Scene-1-118954942

http://chadamation.deviantart.com/art/Mario-Bros-Deleted-Scene-2-118955074

http://chadamation.deviantart.com/art/Mario-Bros-Deleted-Scene-3-118955189

To get inspired doing this I actually put the movie in while doing all this, plus the sketchlings. I finished up to the part I believe where they were running from the cops, in a car chase. When I'm in bed I'll probably draw a bit more for the scenes, like animating Simon melting down which has too be really really detailed. The characters walking, which is mostly Koopa and Simon, maybe Toad.

Phlibbit if this deserves it's own thread please go ahead and do so, I wasn't sure if I should just keep adding to this thread or not. Also, this is a joke really, you should get your contacts to try and hook us up with Bob Hoskins, John Lequizamo, and Dennis Hopper, to actually do the VO's. Haha, that'd be great, but would never happen.

If anyone wants to do the voice of Simon, post your tryouts. Not to steal the spotlight, but to make things quicker I'm doing all the voices. Even though I'm not so sure if I'll do Koopa, I have to do a sample test to see if I think I can do it.

Other then that that's all I've got to say for the night.

haha this will be great. One thing I thought was weird is Koopa says "Simon De-Evolve him now" even though Simon is the head police guy with the mustache throughout the film, but the Devo controller which is unnamed I guess is the bald guy in the suit at the controls. But he nods in acknowledgment to Koopa. Is this the guy you're going for below? The technician guy.

Image

I think he's the one that gets turned into slime. I say that because look after Toad gets out of the chair as a Goomba in the background, he looks like he almost has a tissue or something, or is about to sneeze. Plus he already looks kinda sick I think :D I think the guy is unnamed in the scene. Also when the fight breaks out, he's nowhere to be found. The credits say Jeffrey Pillars is the Devo Technician, of course I am not familiar with who the actor is, or whether it is the fatter technician guy in the Iggy/Spike Evolve scene. It also says there is a character "Egan"? Now that's just almost from Ghostbusters ;)

BTW, love this idea! I know life and all that stuff takes priority but can't wait to see this! Great work on the storyboards and all so far. And your other toons :D

It's a shame I had no idea about this. I was actually going by the storyboards that Phillbit provided, and looking back at those, I just realised Simon is the cop. Since I've already animated Simon melting down I don't want to go back and fix it. So we will have to deal with it. But I just finished animating him melting down, and it's seriously the coolest thing I've ever animated, a total of 10 frames. Took me about 2 hours, if it was a big budget animation it would have probably been 50 frames.

Awesome, can't wait! :D Were you gonna integrate some of the film's score? I know in that scene there was no music but maybe for that part of the scene, there might have been. I'm excited!

I was thinking this myself actually, I downloaded the SMB score somebody put a torrent up a while back. Not sure what piece to use, or if I will use any of it. But I thought about it.

Exactly--I was about to mention the score. There's lots of stuff on there that isn't in the movie. Not sure if there is anything from the deleted devo scene or not. And BTW I loooove these designs, especially Koopa.

Oh sure. Especially for animation, it's really important for traits like that to be shown; it really fleshes out the character.

Alright guys, I've been keeping you all insuspense for a while. I think it's been about 2 days ago that I created this. But anyway, here is a preview of the Simon Meltdown, and what do you know? It's actually Simon melting down into a glob of goo. http://chadamation.deviantart.com/art/Simon-Meltdown-Test-119423915 I hope you guys like it. I dunno when it will be completely done, but this is just hte preview of what I have to show. It took 3 hours to hand draw Simon melting, and like half a day to get this animation going right. The background for it is not what it will look like when its finished, it's just a saple so I so know hwere it's going. Also I'm prety trashed right now so sorry for the bad typign mistakes if there are any.

Lol dude. That's pretty darn sweet. Can't wait to see it finished. Oh, and BTW, one of the Behind the Scenes videos I have shows like two seconds of that scene where someone (I really think it's that guy who helps toad out of the chair) comes forward in the chair and transforms into primordial slime.

And, if I remember correctly, someone who saw the movie in theaters says that he remembers that scene and someone transforming into ooze in the devo chamber. Dunno if that's true or not.

I saw that on the behind the scenes vid, it's really quick. It looks more like the chair moves foreward at a fast speed and his body explodes and the slime flies everywhere. I never even thought of it being the technician though, or happening like that. When I was little I really liked how the cassette explained the sequence, so that was what I went with. I could probably just add a hat on his head and change the color of his uniform, but that's so much change. I bet in a year I'll go back and George Lucas it like I did with my first Mario Bros cartoon.

Example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoFXzevT6nI That was the original 2007 version, and then the new and improved 2008 version, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw8z138gSDg Note to everybody, Mario's voice in the 2008 edition of Kitchen Madness, will sound like Mario in the animated deleted scene. Which now leads to an update on that.

I got home from work tonight at 11:30, an hour early, so I started working on the animation, got a lot done. Just finished the motuh movements, and a lot of drawings. Backgrounds come last of course. If I'm feeling a little risky I might try to make the backgroudns like they do on Aqua Teen or the Brak show, where the backgroudns are actually still images from the movie, since I have a lot of hte books that show these pictures. If not they will be scanned and traced to look identicle. I also just wanted to show a still image that doesn't have a background yet, but it invovles Koopa and the Mario Bros.

Image

I made it realyl small so it wouldn't give too much away. I'll keep you guys updated as much as possible on this project.

Also since I was trying to keep the designs close to the game, and their movie counter parts. Koopa's hair and features are really just like Bowser in the video games. I added a few scales, and kind of made his skin tone a really light green.

This is looking better and better every time you update. I like the direction you've taken Koopa; it just gives me more reasons to put comparisons to the game counterparts. If it's backgrounds you need, I have a folder in my files that contains a heap of screenshots I ripped from the DVD. If you can think of anything specific I can see if I have anything like that in my collection.

Hey if you could just post whatever you have that would be great. I know what angles I want to use but I can't really explain them. But if you have a ton of screencaps and pictures, I'd like to see them if you don't mind.

EDIT
Hey just to save you time, I took some screencaps from the Devo scene and drew them trying to make it identicle as possible to the real movie. But if you have alternate angles of like the entire room, or images of the room that aren't shown, I would be glad to see them so I can copy them. There's a part where Koopa is going to walk too the control panel, it's going to be a common upper body, background scroll, and thats what I need a lot of background images for.

Also I'm going to try my damndest to get the image of Toad's head shrinking and animate it into the background, on one of hte monitors.

Ah that would be awesome. The only other "alternate" angle I can think of straight off would be from the storyboards that are already on the site.

It's been a while since I've updated, and I have my reasons. So I did a huge new overhaul on Simon, he is no longer Simon, it's just like the speculations you the fans have made, and thanks for pointing this out. An image of that can be seen right n'yha,

Not really an update, but I wanted to ask ZACK and PHLIBBIT a question. If you guys are interested, and have good mics, would you guys want to do the grunty voices for Goombas, 1 and 2? I just got off of work, and had a buddy of mine record the voice of the Technician. I'll probably work on lip syncing sometime soon. It's really a good feeling to know there's other people doing voices on my animated projects, I don't hate doing all the voices, I just like to have people and friends make cameos. So if you guys are up too it, hit me up.

Yeah that's pretty much what I was looking for. Some grunts, and what not.

BTW here are what the GOOMBA's will look like

Image

I'm not really sure, but I know some of the Goombas were more alligator looking, so I figured they were based off the Koopa Troopas, so that is what I went with.

cool man! haha I have a few short sounds of me doing it after watching a couple goomba scenes in the movie. I have a headache and a sore throat before, dunno if that helps or hurts it :D I guess just let me know where to send it and let me know if you have any notes/ideas for what kind of goomba sounds you want, like laughing or anything. I didn't really do the "Frank Welker" goomba, though you can totally tell it's him in some scenes. With his talking and his laugh a little.

I'll give you and Phlibbit a PM, just send them to my e-mail address. I don't want to post it on a forum. I just got done a couple hours ago recording the lines I had to do. There's a few bit more animation movements, and a few drawings to do, and it will be done.

Hey Phlibbit, I was wondering if you had by any chance had some sound effects from the movie? I can't really get the sound of the DEVO chamber, but I have some kind of electricity shock sound that would work good. Also when do you think you can get the voice of a Goomba in? I'm like 90% done with this, I have to animate (which I'm doing now as we speak) the technician, and add mouth movements on the characters and it's completely done. If you can't I can just get my friend who did the voice of TECHNICIAN to do it.

Anyway I hope the next post I make, or the post after that, in this thread, will be a link to the final cartoon. I can't wait till it's done, it's been a blast, mind boggling, confusing, frustrating(mostly the character change between Simon and Technician), time making it. I've watched the test animation spliced in with the actual real footage, and when the animation ended and it cut to the real life footage, I saw it blend in really well. I hope it's not just me who thinks this. Anyway I better stop writing now and get back to it.

I don't have any sound effects, beyond what anyone could just rip straight from the movie. I'll try to get you some goomba grunts by tomorrow, if that's okay.

Aight, I recieved Phlibbit's Goomba voice, and wouldn't you know it, 3 hours later the animation and video was all done. I'm uploading it on youtube as we speak, I couldn't have done it without you guys. You can find that link right, n'yah
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmfZ1efH-8s Hope you guys like the finished version, Koopas face was changed a bit, Simon/Technician was the biggest and fastest change over I've done for a cartoon.

I would also like to announce that I am thinking of animating the scene that took place inside the resteraunt, and maybe even Lina and Koopa's kiss that we heard about. That would be fun to animate since it would only be what? 5 seconds long?

You really did a great job on this! The film footage mixed with your animation actually really works well. The flow is nice and it really makes the whole scene make a lot more sense. Plays really well. And I love the designs and everything. And the music you chose to put in there also really works well, too! Great job! I'd love to see more of these, do 'em all, lol!

I'd like to see the scene in the cafe with the Scapelli plumbers after "they beat us to it again!" that whole confrontation with "nobody touches my tools"

You guys thank you all so much for the support. Afer this video I'm watching and done making this post, I have a BEHIND THE VOICE OVER IN THE BOOTH SCENES video to post, it's a blank video that has words telling the story of recording his dialogue, while playing the his entire track.

I might take a break, though, and go back to doing episode 2, DIE AND BURN AGAIN, of 0069, or BAKERS UNION 911, a cartoon sitcom taking place in a factory that's a bakery.

I love animating MARIO, if I was in the business I swear I would con Nintendo, get so many investers, and buy the rights to make a remake of a movie and cartoon series. I've studied deep into the character since I was about 3 or 4, just from playing all the games. There were only three Mario's back in my day, Captain Lou, the VA for the Super Mario 3 and Mario World cartoons, and Bob Hoskins. Charles Martine (I don't know how to spell his last name) is good, but man he just makes Mario look act way too gay, but not like a homo, I mean happy. No offense to him, everybody loves his voice, so do I, but it's not Mario to me. What this has to do with anything I don't know.

Oh dude, believe me, that is in my mind. I just haven't read into it as deep as I did with the meltdown, even though I messed up at first having one of the Simon's being the one to be meltded down. I just havent even started yet.

A couple of months ago I was going to make a MARIO BROS fan cartoon, which was a sequel to KITCHEN MADNESS(the link is above). Involving the BROS going to the Mushroom Kingdom. I had a originally planned on having the movie versions of the Bros as the Scapelli Bros, in a scene where they took the job. Luigi was all bent out of shape, and Mario was a clumbsy guy who makes himself look good, just in case the "perfect girl" is around, which is obviously Peach.

Cool. I really like the other Kitchen Madness videos. The cafe scene seems like cutting it was probably better for pacing but would have really solidified a serious rivalry between the two businesses though it was apparent anyway. Also funny to think they invite Daisy to dinner, they used that free dinner to their advantage :D The interpretation on the audio cassette is kinda boring and like everything else leaves out a lot of dialogue.

I thought Mario's "Nobody Touches My Tools" sounds like a big line. I want that on a t-shirt. that or "Trust the Fungus" or "This Ain't No Game" Also Hoskins and Leguizamo have a REALLY pissed look in that one shot. haha

EDIT Well watching again, I'm not entirely sure how it played out in the final movie. It may have differed from the shooting script, the original storyboards, ideas, movie adaptation, cassette tape. I wanna say there was a version where it says A goomba is reverted back to slime. I guess my thinking now is the pair of Goomba boots and coat in the chair? And a technician(is it him?) hard to tell appeared ever so briefly. Also probably doesn't matter but when Luigi turns the dial, it looks like it's on "NOW". Who knows. haha

Not that it takes anything away from this since it is well documented there is a version with the technician, it just makes me really curious what was filmed and sadly the movie bombed so no features will ever surface it seems.

EDIT AGAIN

Well looking at the part 3 Making of, it does indeed look like the effect was shot with the technician. I am more confused than ever :D

that pic with the goomba coat with patch seems to confirm it I guess? It'd be nice to see the scene for sure or find out from someone involved in it.
