Luigi belt info?

Postby christphern » Sat Aug 21, 2010 1:25 am

So, first off, my first post here. So, to start, I want to say thank you guys for having me. I hope I can contribute at least something to the community here.

So, as to the reason I really came here to begin with, I guess. :) Lately, I've been trying to assemble a movie Luigi belt, as accurate as I can manage. And, thus far, I haven't had much luck beyond identifying and obtaining the belt itself.

The main problem (since it's essentially only two pieces), is the tool pouch. My research leads me to conclude that it's a contractor's tool bag, but I can't find one that matches. Here are some screen grabs, of the most clear shots in the film.

Luigi Belt 2
Luigi Belt 3
Luigi Belt 4
Luigi Belt 5
Luigi Belt 6
Luigi Belt 7
Luigi Belt 8

Any help, or information would be greatly appreciated. The only identifying mark that I can see on the pouch is the little oval shaped emblem, but, whatever logo might be there isn't identifiable on the DVD transfer.

Judging by what I can tell, it appears to be a suede green leather, with either black leather or canvas portions. It's got 3 main pouches, a brown leather tape measure holder on the left side, and a brown leather hammer loop on the right side, as well as what appear to be smaller pockets, probably for contractor pencils or the like, on either side of the main pouches. As mentioned above, it has a brown leather emblem, in the shape of an oval, stitched to the front of the smaller, front facing pocket.

Btw, for anyone who might be interested in what type of belt that is (not sure if it's common knowledge or not), it's a rainbow luggage strap (so, not a belt, per se). Judging by screen caps, it appears to be a perfect match for the one in the movie, both in size, and design (it expands up to 70" to boot, which could encompass two people [ie. Iggy and Spike]) The only problem I see with it, is it has a plastic size adjustor, but, the strap I have was made in 1998, so it could just be a change made between '92 and then.

I actually found one thats pretty close to that one. And I've posted that here on this board

I've found that pouch online, bought it, and dyed it green. It seems more stiff than the one used in the movie (from what I've seen in the movie), but it's the closest and only one (that I could find) to the one used in the movie. And it was hard to find.

Odd. I poked around fairly thoroughly (I thought), and didn't see that. Ah well. Sorry about that.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. The pouch doesn't appear to be 100% there, but it is certainly a lot closer than anything I had come up with.

*edit* Okay, so I did a bit more poking around, and found this:

Still not 100% accurate, but a bit closer. I wonder if it might, perhaps, be an older BucketBoss pouch, given the shape of the manufacturer's emblem on the front of Luigi's pouch. But, looking at this, the details are pretty much all there, except the tape measure pouch is on the belt area instead of on the side, and the leather around the base of the front pouch (may be removable if there's a full leather pouch behind them).

Obviously the tape measure pouch could be removed pretty easily. It wouldn't be perfect, but serviceable, perhaps.

For me, it's the overall idea, or "silhouette," that matters. And hey--if you actually use that thing, you never know when you might need a tape measure. Luigi, I expect, would certainly find one useful for measuring how much pipe to cut off.
