Super Mario Bros. Fan Trailer--EvilGregProductions

Postby Phlibbit » Mon Sep 06, 2010 2:56 am

Just found this on YouTube:

I've been waiting for a while for someone to make a "serious" fan trailer for the film--and it's pretty good. The first "half" is better than the second "half," but it's certainly a lot better than the underutilized trailers and TV spots from '93 that we got.

Off the top of my head, the best official one was the "This...is...no...game" spot, but I'm not sure if it was actually a trailer, TV spot, or just an intro to a news story about the film.

Yeah, I actually watched that after hearing Greg mention it in the review you linked in the other thread. It's really good and captures the tone of the movie well. Such a trailer may well have done the movie better justice in the theatres, at least by allowing people to better understand what they were going in to see.

I recall another Super Mario Bros. fan trailer on Youtube, but it wasn't as good as this.

One of the best trailers from the movie it's, in my opinion, the one featured in The Making of Super Mario Bros. in the german DVD.

But this fan made trailer looks very good (but i didn't liked the song of the second half)
Millions of years of climbing up from the ooze, instantly reversed. Imagine the horror as it all slips away. It's worse than mere death. It's being undone

Yeah--the first half is definitely the best part.

And I totally agree that the "making of" pre-trailer thing is the best "official" movie trailer. It's the combination of the music, Koopa turning in the rain, and "This Aint' No Game." :P

You're both right! That was a very good "trailer" for the film that easily establishes it for "grown-ups". The background music and sounds just really help in developing that mood. Such a trailer certainly would have helped in increasing that demographic's attendance.

Honestly, as an editor, I didn't really like this version. The inception style trailer had better clips and feel. As goofy as the original "I've got the power" trailer was, it was still more professional. This one has the seriousness in the first half, but the editing quality and style needs work. There were voiceless clips that didn't sync with the video, the transition style were dull and the clips chosen (despite its more adult theme) were forgettable.

I'd have to agree. After watching the trailer for the first time in months I feel that while the first half is pretty good as far as tone, many of the clips throughout the trailer are poorly-chosen while most are cut away from too quickly. The second half seems to be a compilation of completely random clips with a bad choice of soundtrack to match. Still, a better attempt.
