SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
Super Mario Bros: Mushroom Madness is a fan film based on the movie storyline.
Most of the props, costumes, and set pieces for the film have been covered in this thread.
I began casting on the 13th of this month and so far have found an actor to play Luigi.
So...in light of this new information I have started a new thread about my film. I believe the movie will advance forward as planned. I found Luigi in 5 days. If I find a Mario in the next 5, I will start shooting by the first of November.

Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
This is great! The actors you've found for Mario and Luigi really fit into their parts. Mario's mustache does look a bit fake but I'm sure it'll work fine... I've got to know, though, what do they think of the film's concept? It's a spiritual sequel to a very infamous film, to say the least.
Also, what are you going to do with the van? It's really cool that you managed to obtain one, but the color is wrong and of course the logo is missing. I'm wondering what the Marios' van would look like at this point in time following their financial success. It'd be cool if you could incorporate the game logo of Mario like the original scripts indicated.

Wow this looks really great! This will be one Mario fan film I will be anticipated to see. This looks as if it may be the best Mario fan film to come out in a long time.

The van logo and other special effects will be added in post.
Everyone had a great time and we finished day 2. Filming has wrapped. Now it's all downhill...or uphill from here.

Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
TRUST THE FUNGUS!!

Now since shooting has "offically" wrapped I can talk more about the movie and what is in store for my film.
My SMB tribute film will be about 20+ long. I've shot over 6 hours of footage in two days. We covered a 10 page script in those 2 days. Which is really fast, considering the massive amount of shot planning that went into it. In total there were 4 actors (including myself). In the orginal script there were 3 actors but a female role was added at the last second and it worked beautifully!!
My SMB tribute film is a part of a much larger film.
With all the SMB parts shot and completed...now comes the really, really, realllllyyyyyyy...hard part. The special effects. And there are MANY special effects! There will be a really awesome "action scene" which was screencaped in the above update posting. And since there are insane amounts of SFX, I will need help. I have a few friends in which I am considering to ask for assistance. Mainly rendering and matte work, digital touchups. Alot of the main SFX will be done by myself, but I might need some help. So, to help pay for the special effects needed for the movie. I am selling off my screen used Super Mario Bros. costumes from my movie. All of the funds collected from the sale will go towards my many SFX shots.
I have a very limited budget. And depending on the auction, it will determine how fast I move on this project.
If the suits sell by this month, I could possibly have some "rendered" scenes to show by the beginning of next year. If they don't sell, it will simply delay my project even further. Either way, the project WILL get done...it's just a matter of time...and MONEY. Haha.
Here are some links and pictures of the suits for sale.

Thats all my current updates. I still have many surprises planned and cool things to show off regarding my SMB movie fan film.
Stay tuned!

This is looking flat awesome. The first SMB movie tribute/fan film! Loved seeing your Mario wielding dual devo guns. That's awesome.
I can't wait to see what you do with it in post. Hopefully you'll get those outfits sold.

Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
We really do have high hopes for this film as it does constitute the very first fan film for the movie. I'm sure once all the SFX and editing is worked out through post-production the film will turn out to be a very high-quality spiritual successor to the movie. We'll certainly give our stamp-of-approval to the project and do what we can to get the word out on it.
As far as accumulating funds to support the SFX work, all I can say is to post about the project on independent film, special effects, props, and any other kind of forum you might already frequent. I have no use or interest in the costumes but I can certainly donate some money to the cause. Not much, but hopefully it'll help.

Wow, this is a very funny project
Millions of years of climbing up from the ooze, instantly reversed. Imagine the horror as it all slips away. It's worse than mere death. It's being undone

Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
I have started to edit footage recently but due to another film shoot this weekend (non-SMB related), I will not be able to get back to this project until late next week.
So I should have more screencaps to show by late next week.
In regards to funding the SFX, I know that Redstar proposed the idea about me accepting donations for the SFX work. And I’ll defiantly look into doing something like that or working on the concept. But if I were to sell all my SMB movie props, I wouldn't have to ask for any donations. I have lowered the price on the auction as low as I can go for the final 24 hours.
We'll see what the auction does and judging from that, I could either open up a donation page or not.
Maybe I could do a "donation for movie credit" or something similar?
Again, it was never my intention to outright ask for donations, but I have some SFX industry professionals that I want to collaborate with and they are expensive...but awesome artists. And by whatever means I can speed this project along the better. Hopefully you all will not have to wait too long for some real substantial updates.
And like I said before, I still have many surprises planned and cool things to show off regarding my SMB movie fan film. What you have seen here is just the tip of the iceburg...many, many cool surprises planned and they will be AWESOME!!!
Until next update!

New auction for items
I went ahead and broke up the costumes. You can now buy Individual items ranging from the "Bob Ombs" all the way up to the "Devo Guns".

Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
Thanks for the front page headline!
I've managed to sell off a few props so I can get started on some of the smaller SFX scenes. It's still going to be a long haul, so there really won't be much to show on the project for several months.
Here are a few new update pictures quickly taken from the editing timeline.

Until next update. Enjoy!

Great update, marioblaster! I'm glad to hear you were able to sell off some of your props to fund at least some of the SFX work. Hopefully you can gather enough funds to get all the SFX done in a professional manner. Remember, our offer to help with a donations page is still on the table... And we can certainly help in getting the word out there!

Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
I think a trailer would be good farther along production. Just show some minor, "everyday occurrences" scenes and end with a great demonstration of the SFX we'll be seeing. Like, build up to whatever it is Mario and Luigi need de-vo guns for and only hint at what they're using it against with a brief shot. That'll stoke the fires of our curiosity!

Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
Small update:
Just finished a rough cut of the entire SMB scene. Tweaked the sound and overall it looks real good. I still have to color correct the scenes and map out the SFX shots. In addition to the SFX shots, there are other shots that I have to go back and edit on the computer. Namely shots that have the boom mic in frame for a few seconds, or like the portable TV montior on the Table in the above screen shot. Stuff like that will be added to my SFX work.
As for SFX effects themselves, I'm not touching them until next year. I'll work on everything but that and save the hard stuff for the new year.
As for coming up with a preview trailer for the SMB scenes, I probably won't do that. Considering that my film is about 15 mintues long, a 5-10 minute movie trailer of a 15 minte scene would be moot. The above screenshots are all that I am going to show for now until I start on the color corrections and SFX. And even then, I'm still not going to "cut" a trailer for it. My SMB scenes are just too small for a stand alone movie trailer.
As for the donation page, I'll look into it. I really appreciate the offer. But I'll hold off on "offically" asking for it until after the new year. When I will actually get a chance to sit down and really crunch out SFX shots. If there are those of you who don't want to wait until January, PM me and I will give you more info.
All in all, from what I have seen so far, the film looks and sounds great. I can't begin to imagine the finished product with all the SFX, sound effects, and music track all added to it.

It's January... The Year of the Fungus, I'm starting to think.
You said you'd begin work on the SFX this year, so I'm eager to see where the project stands at this point. Any updates on what we can expect and when?

Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
yeah...It's been awhile since I updated this thread so I will post a quick note on the project.
Everything is going as planned.
Color corrections and some minor SFX have been completed for the SMB:MM scenes.
I'm still working on other aspects of the "whole" movie. The "SMB: Mushroom Madness" is a 15 minute segment of a much "larger" movie.
I've got a 130 page script and I've shot over 50% of that. This movie is going to be pretty epic and I can show you screenshots of what I have shot so far.
Here are the screen shots from my "epic" movie.
Movie Update Photos
I've shot a total of 30 hours of raw footage (4 hours of that was all raw SMB footage). I'm in the process of editing it all down and look to pick up shooting again in the spring. It's really too cold and snowy right now to get anything outside shot.

Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
Here is a quick update featuring some SFX work for a mario clip.
Truck Driving SFX Shot
Brief synopsis of scene. Mario and Luigi arrive to the "job" and pull into a driveway. They stop and get out.
Runtime about 15 seconds.
Here is what it looks like in it's "raw" form:

Obviously it needs alot of work. For starters, the truck isn't moving and the director is standing in the window for the entire scene. Now we weren't allowed to drive the truck during filming (it wasn't ours and that was the rule) but we could "fake" driving the truck in post.
First up is to remove all backgrounds from the windows. Masking areas around Mario and Luigi. A bright blue to make it stand out.
Second thing to do is to shoot the background footage to match the background we removed via masking. So I stuck a camera on top of my brothers car (complete with cameraman) and we mimicked the "truck" pulling into the driveway with the "cameracar". The looks we got from passing motorists for this shot was priceless. haha.
A few clicks later and this was the result:

It works prefectly and blends just right. It looks abit cheesey but I think it's awsome.
This one frame took about 10 minutes to do. Times that process by about 400 remaining images and you get the 15 second scene. Throw in mushrooms, goombas, mold, fungus, devo gun muzzle flashes, etc. and you get the scope of the SFX work involved in this film.
Hope you all enjoyed this quick Behind the Magicâ„¢ moment...
until next update.

So are you saying that Mushroom Madness is a part from a feature length Mario Movie Fan Film? I'm a little confused.
Plus, nice job with the Truck scene. Its really realistic looking.
Isn't this a little feminine?
Yes. I know. It was my ex wife's.
But you wear this stuff?!
Yeah on an occasion we have a date.

The feature length movie that I am working on is not "all" SMB related. The "Mushroom Madness" segment is just a small part in a much larger film.

Sounds like an incredible amount of work for such a brief period of film-time... I wouldn't have it any other way. That's how it is in the business and you're bring the true level of a professional to this project.

Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
LOGO CHALLENGE
Here is a fun little project that I am presenting to the community.
DESIGN THE COMPANY LOGO FOR THE PANEL TRUCK
The Mario Bros. mode of transportation is an old panel truck. It's as iconic as the colorcoded jumpsuits. However the truck in my film is bare. It doesn't have a logo.
My challenge I'm presenting to the community is to design a company logo for the Mario Bros. panel truck.
Basic info and footnotes about the challenge:
My fan tribute movie takes place after the 1993 movie and the truck has been upgraded since then. It's still old and rundown but it's better then the old one. So no super flashy designs or neon signs. Look at the truck in the 1993 movie for basic ideas.
"Super Mario Bros. Plumbing" should be the main title somewhere on the vehicle. "No leak too small" is their slogan.
Simple is better. Nothing too overly complex, but more retro and cool.
No real telephone numbers. use the number in the movie or another 555 combination.
Keep the design within the rectangle of the back panel. Behind the front door and above the trim moldings.
Your design should be high rez and large. 300 dpi scanned in or starting image size.
Keep in mind the base colors on the vechicle (mustard yellow, black, white). Don't use colors that clash with the background, like a hot pink or something.
I'm currently in the process of finishing all SFX on the truck soon and will need to have a logo done in a few weeks. At the latest. I have my own design planned for the truck but thought that it would be cool to give this challenge to the community and see what they come up with. Who knows, I could use their design, I might not. It depends on the submissions and the timeframe in which I get them. This challenge is open for 2 weeks. After that I use my own design or a submitted one. No deadline extensions.

Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
Got a quick question--is the van remaining yellow? I thought at one point you were considering changing the color back to white in post.

Yeah, I'm keeping the yellow color. They have a new truck, it's bigger, better, stronger and sports a new color. I would have "liked" for the truck to be white like the original, but I am just working with what I have.
I have been getting some awesome truck designs sent to me.
Hopefully in another week I will be ready to put them onto the truck and start on the really COOL SFX. Like the devo guns, goombas, etc.

SFX for Goombas? Now you've piqued my interest on just how far you're going with this project...

shay42 helped me put this together, he made parts of the main logo and I tweaked it:

I am also VERY impressed with the level of detail and effort you're putting into this, Brian! Everything is looking great so far!
I need to find some time to come up with a van logo entry...

I like that it says "25 years of experience." Cuz it's totally true.
The fire rises
Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
Here's what I came up with:

The idea comes from one of the original scripts' description of the Mario Bros. plumbing van, having a "Mario" logo on the side. Plus the word "Super," of course.

That's a cool design Phlibbit! I like how it has the font the Mario Brothers had on their van in the film
"You don't have the rock!..you filthy mammal.."

Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
Great logo! Thanks for submitting a design!
I've received 6 different designs so far (one from a member from another site). I plan to put alittle slideshow of images regarding the van designs in the special features of my movie. Along with the cast and crew interviews.
Technically, the contest is over...However I have yet to reach the point in which I add the logo to the truck in my movie...so I will continue to accept logo designs until I get to that scene.
I've been working almost non-stop on another 15 second scene and it's taken me just about 2 weeks to get it completed. I'm 100% sure that by Monday I will have finished that scene and will be ready to move on to putting the logo on the truck.
I know that I said I wouldn't extend the deadline, but if delaying the deadline a few days gets me more entries...I'll do it.
Everything is going great so far...until next update.
Which will hopefully be next week as I plan to show off the final truck logo in my movie ...

Re: SMB: Mushroom Madness (a Fan Film)
Here is the FINAL truck logo for my movie:

A combination of ideas between shay42 and myself.
I really liked the "classic" look of the movie truck. With the script font and everything. But thought that was too much "old school" for a "new school" revamp of the truck. Mario has a cell phone in the movie so I really wanted a modern take on the logo. The movie's "bold" logo really seemed to fit the bill, and is synonymous with the 1993 movie (in which my movie is based off of, not the games or anything like that). But I still used the old style "faucet" design in my logo (like in the original truck) but tweaked it. In the end, I believe this was the best way to go about showcasing the logo.
I thank everyone who summitted designs, they were all good and gave me ideas in the long run.
I have all the SFX truck footage finished in my movie. Hopefully by next week I can do some preliminary SFX work for the mold and fungus in my movie.
Until next update.
