Goomba Baracks Scene -- Comic Adaptation

Postby Carl » Wed Jan 12, 2011 2:46 pm

These are some pages of an adaption of the movie that I did for my sketching and layout class.

That's all there is too it. Maybe I'll color it at some point. But as it stands, I'm a little busy with other assignments and projects to do so.

Great comic, Carl. The style is just about how I'd imagine a comic adaptation of the movie to have looked: somewhat realistic and a bit darker-looking, but the same little visual gags the movie had. I like how the lizard-head Goomba looks more like a pinheaded-T. rex and has a more menacing, intelligent look in its eyes. That adds a lot more character to the concept of a reptile army. The "points" effect on knocking out the Goomba is also a welcome stylistic addition to set the comic apart from the movie.

I'd love to see more if you get the time to do a page here and there. Perhaps you could do a scene and over time piece them together into a full comic? That'd be really cool. Plus, if you were to use Strasser's novelization or the scripts as a base you could create an "extended cut" of the movie. :D

Those pages are stunning, Carl. It totally reminds me of the kind of comic art in the mid-90s and would make a great adaptation. I too liked the slight modification on the lizard-head Goomba and the "game graphic" points display. I could see some more exaggerations like this work in the rest of a comic adaptation.

This is some very impressive work you've got going on, Carl! You have all the style and talent of a professional comic book artist, and your renditions of the characters match those of their live, on-screen counterparts perfectly. I especially like the way you've drawn Daniella (I think that was her name; it's been almost five years since I've watched the movie, which I've been meaning to do), whose outfit I've never forgotten. Probably because of its similarity to Lena's. XD And, yes, the homage to the "100 points" was very amusing. ^^

I hope to see more of this soon, once you have some time.

Better that the one i'm making
Millions of years of climbing up from the ooze, instantly reversed. Imagine the horror as it all slips away. It's worse than mere death. It's being undone

@phlibbit and peach blossom: Thank you, I attend the Joe Kubert School for Cartooning and Graphic Art, so i've been getting rigorous training in comic book art for the past 3 years. I'm a child of the nineties, so a lot of my influences come from artists like Jim Lee or Mark Bagley, who defined a lot of characters at the time. I like to study up on the classic artists as well though, such as Kirby, Schuster, or Mighty Joe himself. This assignment came up this year as a Movie Adaptation project, so I jumped at it with the SMB crew. I've seen it enough times that I can almost quote it all the way through. lol,

There is a version with word balloons on my hard-drive, but I uploaded this version as I felt the raw artwork looked better without them.

This is really amazing work. You've managed to capture the look of Hoskins and Kaminski while still retaining your own style. The Goomba as well looks really cool. Exactly how I'd hope to see one in a more realistic comic style.

Do you have any plans for further pages?

It's a shame you drew such a minimalist scene as the Goomba barracks are too simple a room to do justice to your great character design. It would be cool to see you approach another, more location-oriented scene, like the Boom Boom Bar or Koopa's suite.

I second the motion that you do more pages. Hopefully you can find the inspiration.

Holy crap, these are Dave Gibbons-good.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

Well, thanks very much everybody. The only reason I haven't done more is purely due to schedule restrictions and other projects. I'd like to do a little something something for the 20th anniversary.

Wow. These are really cool! I can't believe I've overlooked this thread for so long. I must have missed a lot of great stuff from before I joined. :)

An anniversary project would be very cool. Perhaps you could take the sequel hook and make a five or ten page short imagining of what happened? There's far too few speculation on the unproduced sequel from those with the talent to execute their ideas!

You're welcome. I'd love to see what Koopa would look like if you drew him in this style. A scene with him and Daisy would be awesome.
