Peach Blossom's Fanart

Postby Peach Blossom » Wed Jan 19, 2011 12:01 am

Before getting into writing, I used to draw. A lot. :D These will most likely be the only artwork I'll be posting, since I seem to have lost the passion and patience for it over the last four years. All of the artwork I've done between 2000-2007 is done in the style of Japanese animation, since that is the style I enjoyed doing best and that I feel I was relatively good at. These two drawings are based heavily on artwork featured in Sentimental Graffiti (I never saw the anime, but always thought the artwork was gorgeous).

Normally, I tend to dislike all of my old art. Funny, how when I look again at this after almost five years, I actually kind of like it. Anyway, this is my rendition of how Wendy O. Koopa might appear in the movie 'verse. I tend to imagine her as the doppleganger for Rochelle Davis, who played Sarah in The Crow.

Image
Once again in all of her leather and vinyl glory! Being the precocious thirteen-year-old she is, this girl knows exactly how to elude her two cousins and even her father, when it comes to her nightly departures from the castle and into the city for what she describes as "some serious clubbin'".

I think the only thing I'd change about this piece would be to color her nails either red to match her skirt or fluorescent pink to match her hair. Looking at others' fanart of Wendy the other day, I also realized I should have made her nails a lot longer and sharper. Oh, well. At least I remembered to include her signature bracelets.

Excellent job, Peach Blossom! Movie Wendy O. has good fashion sense too :-)

I like the style you used in drawing her. While she's a bit too colorful for Dinohattan's usual fashion-sense and could use some more spikes, I like the character design nonetheless. She's certainly well-drawn and cute.

It's too bad you won't be drawing anymore, though, since you do have some talent and I'm curious how you'd conceptualize the other Koopalings. I also had a cute idea of you drawing your Wendy with a little snake-tongue, since you like that scene with Koopa so much. :P

Thank you! Yeah, I figured Wendy would be very much into fashion. Not only because it relates to her character in the games, but because she's a teenager. ;D

Thank you, I'm glad you like her. Looking back on it now, I see what you mean about her being a bit too colorful. I also agree about a need for more spikes - perhaps a choker and some cuffs in place of her gold bracelets.

I actually have a few other drawings I did that I'll post later (unfortunately, my scanner died a few years ago, so I'll have to take snapshots). One is a framed piece I did of Koopa, Iggy and Spike; while the other features Wendy, Daisy, and Bertha (I always thought she was an awesome character, and would have liked to see more of her in the movie). I love your idea for a piece of Wendy showing her snake-tongue - she would definitely do that, LOL. If I ever do get back into drawing again, I'll definitely do a picture of that. :)

And, yes, that scene with Koopa and Daisy was by far my favorite. XD

That's awesome. I'm really curious to see how you drew those characters since they all had really distinctive and iconic looks to them. The movie just had really great hair & makeup and costume design.

Glad you liked my idea. I think it'd be a fitting piece to pay homage to the movie now that you've found us to appreciate it. :P

Actually, I think she could fit right in with Dinohattan just the way she is. Remember, bright colors do not always equal goodness. Blade Runner teaches us this.

To Redstar: You're welcome. I don't know why I never posted my other artwork...probably because, like you said, I didn't really know of anyplace that would embrace it.

To Prime Evil: Aww, thanks! Wendy's personality is, in my ficverse, actually more like that of Iggy and Spike (not completely good but not totally evil, either). She follows her father's orders to an extent, while at the same time wanting to do what she can to help Daisy, who she forms a sort of sisterly bond with.

~

Well, it took me a while, but I've collected the remainder of my Super Mario Bros.: The Movie fanart...including some I didn't even know I had. :P In my search, I also came across the old Koopa and Daisy comic I'd started at age twelve. It follows the same plot as the film, except Koopa takes on Mario's role, Daisy has Luigi's, Lena has Daisy's, and Wart has Koopa's. However, I thought the "little kid art" was amusing enough to post. Unfortunately, it wouldn't show up on my camera, so I'll have to wait on that. In the meantime, here is the rest of the artwork I promised you, along with a few "bonuses" (except for Wendy, the designs of all the characters - even Daisy's, I believe - came from the official movie coloring book)...

One of the poster designs for my fanfic Koopa and Daisy. (Once I get a rewrite going, so is that title. I don't have an excuse, other than I was twelve when I came up with it.) Anyway, here we have Big Bertha and Wendy O. in their Stomper Boots as they hover protectively behind their princess. Daisy appears to be missing her "rock" here, so I guess Koopa must still have it.

Image

Another poster design, this time featuring the Dino Boys. I'm quite pleased with it, despite the fact that Koopa looks drunk (he's so lopsided!) and that so much of the detail in his suit is lost here. I also apologize for the unsightly flash in his face, but I can't seem to get whatever I'm taking a picture of to show up on my camera (the screen just stays black). I'll try fiddling with it some more and see if I can get it to work. Once I've done that, I'll take a better shot of this.

Image

Just some more random Wendy O, inspired by the artwork of Sentimental Graffiti. I'm not sure what she's dressed up for here (perhaps the wedding of her father to Daisy?). Well, whatever it is, Wendy is definitely out of her element, what with the lack of leather and spikes. Even so, this is definitely my favorite drawing I've done of her.

Image

Princess Daisy, all dolled up for Koopa in her gown from the movie.

Well, any and all fan artwork for the movie is going to be embraced here. It's great for you to be able to share these pieces with other fans. :P

It's a cool idea having Bertha alongside Daisy. She really is a "Girl of Dinohattan" in that she's really the only one we see other than Lena. I can totally see her ending up Daisy's bodyguard. She was a cop in the Clement/la Frenais draft script, after all.

While Bertha's appearance in the coloring book is a bit weird, it's still richly '90s. She's a great character unfortunately very rarely explored in fan artwork.

Ah, yes. The "Dino Boys." (I really like that title for Spike & Iggy) They're the heart and fun of the movie. Spike's pose and the look of his hand really brings to mind the Ghostbusters logo; a film that strongly influenced the original script and characters.

Koopa is pretty slanted, but that can easily be fixed with some lassoing and rotating in whichever program. He's otherwise drawn very well.

Considering her importance to the story, Daisy is very surprisingly explored in fan artwork. I've been hoping to get some more pieces featuring her into the site's gallery, so this is a lovely drawing to see.

Oh wow. That sounds like a really fun reinterpretation of the movie! I'd love to see it when you get the chance, if only to see how you envisioned Wart as a character.

They're all amazing pieces, Peach Blossom. Each has a lot of heart behind them as well as a style of your own. I can really tell how much you enjoyed the movie through them. If you're able to get clean scans of each we'd love to feature them on the site. :)

Thank you for your kind comments, Redstar! I very much enjoyed reading them. :)

Thanks! Bertha is something of an older sister to Wendy in my fanfic, and Daisy meets Bertha through her. And I had no idea that Bertha was actually a cop in one of the script drafts! How awesome is that?! I really like the idea of her becoming Daisy’s bodyguard, too. I’ll definitely keep that in mind for when I rewrite my story.

Redstar wrote:While Bertha's appearance in the coloring book is a bit weird, it's still richly '90s. She's a great character unfortunately very rarely explored in fan artwork.

Yes, it was a bit strange, wasn’t it? Especially her hairstyle. :D It’s a shame to know that so few artists draw her, though it makes me doubly glad that I chose to include her in one of my own pieces.

Thanks, and I think the title “Dino Boys” is pretty catchy myself. I think Spike’s hand looked that way in the coloring book, too, but it’s cool how it reminds you of the Ghostbusters logo. I have no idea who the artist who designed it was, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be the same one who illustrated the SMB coloring book.

Redstar wrote:Koopa is pretty slanted, but that can easily be fixed with some lassoing and rotating in whichever program. He's otherwise drawn very well.

Yeah, I think Koopa will be pretty easy to fix with a little help from my old friend Photoshop. Even though he’s quite slanted, I’m glad you like his design.

Redstar wrote:Considering her importance to the story, Daisy is very surprisingly explored in fan artwork. I've been hoping to get some more pieces featuring her into the site's gallery, so this is a lovely drawing to see.

Daisy has always been one of my favorite characters (frankly, I’d be surprised if there was a lack of fanart depicting her). I think this was actually the first time I drew her in her formal gown. When I first started drawing her, at age twelve, it was always in the outfit she wore when Luigi first meets her.

Redstar wrote:Oh wow. That sounds like a really fun reinterpretation of the movie! I'd love to see it when you get the chance, if only to see how you envisioned Wart as a character.

Aww, thanks! I’m not gonna lie, it really is a rip-off of the movie, what with everyone just stealing everyone else’s lines. It could be considered a parody, I suppose. :D Wart looks just as he does in the video game, but I’ll definitely do a redesign if I ever start drawing again. Thinking about it now, I see him as a heavyset man with a green complexion and warts covering his face. XD

Again, thank you so much for your thoughtful words, Redstar! I’ve loved this movie for many years, and it’s a nice feeling to know my artwork divulges that. I’ll try to get some proper scans of all these pieces eventually.

Yeah, she fills the role of Sgt. Simon in the Clement/la Frenais draft script in that she books Mario & Luigi at the police station. She also "confiscates" Daisy's pendant for herself in the process, which causes Mario & Luigi to track her down at the Boom Boom Bar, which in this version of the script is a club for cops and Goombas. She's still as "good" a character as she is in the movie, but it's certainly an alternate interpretation of the character

We currently only have four pieces of fan art with Daisy on the site, of which only two specifically feature her. Both of those have her in her paleontology outfit, so seems you're not alone in drawing her that way. :P

Oh, so basically he'd be the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen? xD

That’s very a very interesting fact about Bertha having been a cop in one of the draft scripts. She certainly has the attitude for such a career, that’s for sure! I can also picture her sporting a uniform and carrying a baton (perhaps one with spikes, LOL). :D

Yes, I think I saw those two pieces you mentioned (one had Daisy with Yoshi on a leash, and I think the other depicted a mash-up of her character in both the movie and video games). It’s also good to know I’m not the only one who’s partial to her paleontology outfit.

Redstar wrote:Oh, so basically he'd be the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen? xD

I wasn’t sure who you were referring to at first, so I consulted Google. But yes, that is very much the look I imagine a “humanized” Wart to have.

Thank you! That’s always been my aim in writing, but I’m glad that fact is mirrored in my artwork, as well. :)

A baton with spikes, huh? That actually brings to mind the tail of a Stegosaurus, which is a dinosaur I've often speculated as a good ancestor for Bertha.

It's a good book series and film, though the film isn't the most faithful of adaptations. Still, Lynch inserted his own style into that world and imagined the Baron in a way that would at least suit Wart better than Vladimir.[/quote]
