Ah, Jack Black reprises his role from Take It To The Stars as Mario. While Zach Braff was replaced by Paul Dano. Interesting cast. I bet this woulda been a fun movie, since I always love Chris Columbus films. Though, why is the poster rotoscoped? It looks like a matt painting.

Actually, I made this before Take to the Stars. It was meant to be a seperate concept from my sequel concepts. I got the idea to use Black for TTTS due to this concept. It just seemed right.

Jack Black is an interesting choice for this particular version of Mario. While I think he could pull off a level-headed "Mario," the '91 script's version of Mario is just so gruff and hardened that it'd be a sore waste of Black's comedic talents. People expecting Black for his comedy would be very disappointed.

Bill Nighy is a good choice for the King (or any king, for that matter), though his unique vocal tic actually makes me think he'd make an exceptionally creepy and imposing Koopa or reptile-human in general for the dinosaur-oriented version of Super Mario.

I decided to cast Black based upon his experience in the move, King Kong. He played a very serious and convincing role in that film and it made me honestly consider him as a good candidate. Black has played several roles in his past where he's had to be maybe not so hardened, but definitely gruff.

True. He did play a fairly dramatic and dickish role in King Kong. If he played it up he could play a suitable Jennewein/Parker Mario.

When I originally started this project it was based upon the 1991 SMB script that was later scrapped. However, time has passed and I came up with a new idea. Instead of basing a modern day film on the '91 script, what if I composed a completely new idea inspired by some of the elements from that script. For the most part the story is different, the character portrayals are much different, and we have 2 princesses, not just 1. I'll give you a brief overview of the plotline I created for the story behind the poster.

Super Mario Brothers:
The film opens up to a scene from Mario and Luigi's childhood where their father tells them about an important lesson. (Flashbacks occur a few times throughout the "film" depicting the father and them as children). As you know, Mario and Luigi are two brothers that are also plumbers. When they arrive at a restaurant run by a long time family friend they find that there is more to the situation than a leaky pipe and shaking walls. The brothers go down to the sewer below the restaurant to investigate and fnd a series of tunnels underneath the buidling. Suddenly, the brothers are chased by a giant crab that emerges from one of the tunnels and the brothers go into a panic and jump into one of the neighboring tunnels. Little did they know that this tunnel was marked with a symbol of a mushroom and it would lead them to a far off kingdom.

When they get there they are greeted by the Princess Peach, her sister Daisy, and their loyal subject, Toad. The brothers are shown the beautiful kingdom and told of its history and former king. But, King Bowser Koopa ruins the party and kidnaps the Princess Daisy. His plan? To force the princess to marry him and he will become king of the Mushroom Kingdom. Peach asks Mario and Luigi to save her, but Mario is reluctant until Luigi convinces his brother otherwise. Daisy then sends her loyal friend, Toad, to help the brothers. They run into a noble wizard who gives them relics of power, Thwomps, Hammer Brothers, Lakitus, an egg that hatches into a dinosaur (Toad tells them it is a "Yoshi"), and even end up in the Minus World for a bit. When it is all said and done they rescue the princess and send Bowser to his fiery grave.

They return to the Mushroom Kingdom with the princess safe and sound. Luigi and Daisy share a tender kiss, Mario is kissed, too, but on the cheek by Peach, and the wizard reveals himself to be the long lost king (Peach and Daisy's father). Peach asks the brothers to stay but Mario politely refuses and claims they must return to their home in Brooklyn and continue their lives. Peach accepts their decision, but allows Daisy to go with them. When the brothers exit the pipe that led to the Mushroom Kingdom, they are greeted once again by the giant crab. In a panic once again, Mario remembers he has something the king gave him; a fire relic. He uses it to incinerate the crab into dust and the brothers return to the surface.

Back in the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach is preparing to rest for the night but is interrupted by sounds of chaos from the city. Soon enough she is greeted by Shy Guys who take her and Toad prisoner. Peach tells Toad to head to the tunnels and warn the brothers of what has happened. Toad slips away and enters the tunnels and reaches the surface. Across the street are Mario, Luigi, and Daisy enjoying a dinner until Mario spots Toad peaking throw the sewer entrance across the street. The brothers and Daisy leave the restaurant and confront Toad as he tells them that Peach has been kidnapped. When the brothers enter the sewers again they see Peach and the Shy Guys entering another tunnel. It leads to Sub Con, the Land of Dreams. The brothers and Daisy know they have to rescue Peach so they enter the tunnel leading to this other land. When they get there, they cannot believe their eyes...

At the end of "Super Mario Brothers", Mario and Luigi, with the help of the Princesses Daisy and Peach, rescued King Toadstool from Bowser's grasp and restored his reign as king of the Mushroom Kingdom. Daisy goes back to Brooklyn with Mario and Luigi while Peach decides to stay behind and help her father rebuild. But, before the brothers and Daisy can get back to the city, Peach is kidnapped by a burly, ghost faced soldier known as a Shy Guy and taken into another tunnel outside of the Mushroom Kingdom and into the world of Subcon. It is later revealed that she has been taken

Toad is sent by the king to alert the brothers and Daisy of Peach's capture and request their assistance to bring her back. Mario, Luigi, Daisy, and Toad enter the beautiful, yet violent world of Subcon only to encounter a three-headed viper called a Tryclyde, a vicious dinosaur called Birdo, and an army of Subcons turned slaves called Shy Guys lead by a ruthless dictator known as Wart on a mission to conquer the outside world. Anyone in Wart's path is hypnotized and thrown into the Nightmare Machine to become a soldier under his power. The brothers run into the former king of Subcon and are told the story of it's demise. Soon after, the former king crosses worlds and alerts King Toadstool to raise an army to protect the Mushroom Kingdom from attack, all the while the brothers and Daisy battle with Wart himself over Peach's life. Wart needs Peach in order to convince her to become his Queen and assist him in his quest for power.

In the end, the Toadstool's defeat the Shy Guys, and the brothers defeat Wart and his generals to restore power to the king of Subcon and it's people. But, Wart doesn't die before he offers a forewarning to Mario and Luigi that he was only the beginning of something much, much worse, and that his presence will be made known at an untimely moment. The brothers and the princesses celebrate their victory, but prepare for what lies next...

I like it, but is that really Jack Black as Mario? It looks more like the guy who played Alan the sword shop owner in "Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie," he even has the turtleneck...

The new ones feature Zach Galfianakis as Mario. The one with Jack Black was an older rendition that I have long since ignored.

The "Subcon" is really Zack Galifinackas? He's way too thin, he looks more like Will Forte as Alan Bishopman... Still, nice design.

Yep, for "Super Mario Brothers" AND "Subcon". :)

At the request of Serum from a different thread here was my teaser design for "Super Mario Brothers", as well as the teaser for "Subcon".

Dude. I love these. Seriously.

The grit and realism of the pipe in the first poster reminds me of Parker and Terry's Ghostbusters-style take of the film while the tagline for the second inspires so much speculation.

Thanks man, I really appreciate it! The first poster was meant to be an illusion that the mushroom engrained on the pipe had symbolism to it, and not just towards the video game, but towards something deeper within the "plot".

For the second, I wanted it to look like a 1930's propaganda piece. And with the Shy Guys being a huge focal point of the "plot" for "Subcon", I decided to use it to my advantage.

I really get that vibe from both posters. You should definitely consider doing more in this style. Your ability to develop posters has certainly improved a great deal from what you had made only a few years ago.

Thank you. :)

And I certainly do intend on doing more. My original plan for this "reboot" is to do a trilogy, but I will do definitely do more if the creative juices keep flowing. I've been working on developing ideas for SMBIII already.

While I perfer your other sequel concept posters, I do admit that the teaser ones are outstanding! I also like that they are two different styles, one is very gritty (the mushroom one) while the other has a propaganda like feel to it (the Shy Guy one).

Thank you! By the way, if anyone is looking at the posters and wondering if anything is different, there is. I changed the credits font, made the image larger, and slimmed some things down to give it more of a "Star Wars"-esque feel.

Here it is. The third and final concept for my reboot Super Mario Brothers trilogy. I've enjoyed making these over the past three years and love the progression I've made as a designer since then. Thanks for any comments, critiques, whatever. I just love sharing art, especially SMB art.

Super Mario Brothers: Darkland

Darkland takes place four years after the events of SMB: Subcon. Wart gave the brothers a cryptic warning of impending doom the Mushroom Kingdom were to endure in due time. But, Mario and Luigi were watching, waiting for what was to come their way. As time went on nothing happened. Toads went back to their normal way of life, the kingdom was at peace, and Mario, Luigi, Daisy, and Peach all left for Brooklyn to start their new lives together. But, Daisy and Peach longed to see their father again and made the journey back to the Mushroom Kingdom. The brothers and their princesses were welcomed home as heroes with praise and fanfare. However, this was only a calm before the storm.

Out of nowhere a strange bustle comes from the north and without warning an invasion takes out the kingdom. The one who leads the charge is none other than a resurrected BOWSER! Needless to say he conquers the kingdom once again and imprisons much of the kingdom, including the King whom Bowser brutally beats. But, before his death he is told by Bowser that he is a partner in a bigger plot to destroy all worlds with a powerful source known as the Dark Star. Whomever possesses its power controls everything good and evil. The leader of the charge is an extraterrestrial being known as Fawful, along with his minion, Midbus. They live within another realm known as Darkland and plan to merge the worlds for their own gain. Mario tries to save the King from suffering, but death is inevitable. Before his passing he tells Mario what Bowser had told him and informs Mario to find a magical flute known as the Warp Whistle. It is the only tool that can be used to travel through different realms outside their own such as Darkland to fight Fawful and Midbus on their own ground.

After Mario leaves, him, Luigi, Toad, and the princesses barely escape destruction with their lives. Mario tells the others what has happened and what is needed to do in order to stop a terrible disaster from destroying all worlds. But, in their journey to obtain the Warp Whistle they are thrown off guard by Midbus and Fawful's militia. They also encounter Bob-Ombs, an air raid of Bullet Bills, and a long, arduous walk across seas and caverns. Eventually, they meet find themselves fighting Midbus and defeating him as he guards the Warp Whistle. But, it's not as easy as it sounds. The golden block containing the whistle is on a pillar guarded lava and time sequenced Roto-Discs; if you're not fast enough you could be cut to size or burned alive. Mario makes a daring leap for the pillar and is almost unsuccessful, but is able to lift himself up and capture the whistle. Soon after they make their way to Fawful's lair and face off with him for the first time only to realize they are no match for Fawful without the power of the Dark Star. Mario and Luigi convince the princesses to head back to the Mushroom Kingdom to prepare the Toads for the worse, but be ready to fight whatever is thrown their way. Toad makes it his mission to obtain the Dark Star and help his friends defeat Fawful and Bowser.

Bowser goes up against Mario and Luigi in a battle of fire. Bowser is taken down and asks for Fawful's help only to be cast out and realize he's been a pawn in his plan all along. Mario and Luigi finish Bowser once and for all and face off against Fawful. All hope looks lost until Toad captures the Dark Star from an unaware Fawful and uses its power to take him down. Toad saves the brothers and Fawful is no more with his army disappearing like dust in the wind. The heroes return to the Mushroom Kingdom where the Toads welcome them home with pride and joy. When asked if they'd become kings and queens of the land, they simply reply with a thank you, but give the kingship to Toad. Toad thanks them for their efforts and friendship over the years to bring peace to their land and the Mario brothers offer their congratulations before heading home to Brooklyn with their brides to be and live happily ever after.
