Wario/Waluigi Film Concept

Postby WildWinger88 » Sun Jan 23, 2011 1:06 am

I've been toying around with this idea for a long time now and am anxious to get other Mario Bros. fans reactions and ideas involved. As some of you may have seen in the Fanstuff thread, I have created many posters based upon conceptual "sequels" to the first Mario film, as well as a mock-up poster of a modern day SMB film based upon the '91 script.

Well, I have decided that I'd like to do a spin-off concept based upon the adventures of Wario and Waluigi. Where do you guys come in? Well, I'd like to get some of your ideas for a storyline/plot of what a possible Wario/Waluigi film could be like. This involves cast and crew, elements from the game(s) that would be used in the film, possible designs ideas for a poster, etc.

Basically, my role would be to design the poster once all of the ideas are gathered up and organized. I'm not setting any kind of direct deadline on submission of ideas, but I thought this could be something fun, interesting, and creative for everyone on the boards. So, without further to do, let's get it on!

I don't know about Waluigi, since he is character that's only used in games like Mario Party. But I do have ideas for Wario.

Wario Land: Wario is living a crapppy life in his crappy apartment in Diamond city, when at work he recieves a map to Kitchen Island, a place made out of food. But what really pikes Wario's interest is a statue of Peach that's at the end. So Wario puts on a pik helmet and sets off for adventure.

Poster Slogan: This ain't no Mario. This is Wario.

I'm also apprehensive about the inclusion of Waluigi since he's largely a gimmick character created solely to give Luigi an unneeded opposite. He's appeared in no actual game that would provide some sort of justification of his character. However, I'm open to the idea of him having validity, and a film wherein he's given a motivation/backstory/whatever could suit that purpose.

Still, I say focus first and more on Wario and visit Waluigi later. Wario is a big enough character in himself to stand for an entire "film." One of the things I like about him is that he's an anti-hero. He's big, he's bad, and he has flaws that he's made work for himself. In a way, the best onscreen-comparison would probably be Shrek. I think you could take inspiration from the self-aware, deconstructed nature of the first film and apply that to a Wario film (though a bit more mean-spirited).

I also like that Wario is essentially a mean-spirited elf. Play that up. I'd like seeing a squat, grotesque elf in high pants and pointy shoes going on an adventure for gold. He's a troll born as an elf. Roll with it.

Would this be live-action or CGI animated? Live-action could be interesting, IMO.

I personally prefer the idea of it being animated. Wario is just a character that could benefit from the exaggeration of animation. Still, live-action is an interesting prospect. I would love to watch a gag-filled and mean-spirited modern version of The Dark Crystal.

After careful consideration, I think Waluigi will be left out of this one. I like the idea of giving Wario his own breathing room, anyways.

^Ah wow, that's a wonderful teaser poster! Really great--it gets the point across without saying too much. The Disney logo at the bottom sells it for me :D

I have to agree with Phlibbit: this is a wonderful teaser poster. Gold is all you have to say when it comes to Wario. The Disney logo really is a brilliant touch, too.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the compliments. :)

I've got some more work to do before I can turn anything into a final product. But, if anyone has suggestions as to a cast or plot, let's here it! Any feedback and ideas are appreciated.

This is a great start! However, I'd like to elaborate a little more on this.

That is actually the plot of a fan fiction I'm working on. It currently has 2 chapters.

Since this is a "spin-off" to the '91 Jennewein/Parker fantasy script than it could very easily take place in the same world, only a "land over." The themes and attitude of that script would make it very easy for the inclusion of our favorite little troll. I recommend reading the script over again and imagining what part of the world Wario would live in. I can very easily imagine him down a wrong turn of the checker-board road, having his own adventure parallel to Mario & Luigi's.

I'm actually also curious how Wario would be imagined in a spin-off to the '93 Super Mario Bros. film. He could very easily exist in yet another parallel universe that has a bit of fantasy to it, but still very "Blade Runner." Each would be a cool concept to explore.

Actually, I was looking at this concept to not be based as a spin-off of SMB '93 or the '91 script. This would more or less be it's own film with it's own identity. I'm just trying to figure out some good ideas to based such a film off of.

Well, you did say in your initial post that it's a "spin-off concept," so I figured it'd be at least somewhat influenced by one of the scripts.

That is true, I did say that. I guess what I meant was that it's a spin-off in the sense that it's a Mario-based character, but this would be a seperate concept with it's own identity. Not solely based on anything related to the SMB film(s).
