Here is a poster for a sequel I came up with:
Image
I was originally gonna do a different version of the "M logo" poster, but, I thought a completely different take would be more interesting. I might make a M logo poster too, as well as some others. Also some taglines I came up with are featured at the bottom, which I'll do for some other posters too.

Yes, that is a fireball in his hand..though he didn't get it by a fire flower *GASP!*

Awesome poster, Oni. I'm fine with Mario wielding a fireball, but I am curious on how you'd fit such an idea into the film's take on things. I'm sure there's a way where it would be thematically possible.

Looking forward to seeing future posters and sketches, especially those geared for the sequel. You've really got me thinking on what type of character, human or dino, that Christopher Lloyd would play. :)

I'd figure Christopher would play Wart (Yeah, we've heard that "Koopa's brother Wart would be the sequel's antagonist" a million times, but I think it works), and he'd be a half human half dino character kinda like Koopa's form near the end of the film, with that kind of wacky personality Chris did with Judge Doom at the end of Roger Rabbit. As for the fire power, I'd imagine the way Mario would get it is that after getting shot by a flamethrower by a Snifit (Wart's army, consisted of the Snifits seen multiple times in the first film), instead of burning, his body would absorb the flames, giving him fire powers (Kinda like in Mario Galaxy how his body absorbed the Luma's powers).

This is a great idea for a poster. I could imagine Bob Hoskins (Mario) in the same blue tone from the first poster holding the flame in his hand with a smirk on his face. The Steel Blue metallic "2" to the left center on a black background, a tagline underneath, and the company logos and realease date of "Summer 1995" at the bottom. God, this makes me wish this series would have been bigger. My childhood would have been even better. Batman movies, Men in Black, Independence Day, Super Mario Bros. 2(?). It would have been even more amazing.

That's actually what I am working on right now, Mario saluting with a flaming hand, with Luigi holding a plunger and wearing the "Thwomp Stompers 2.0" I came up with.

Wart playing the new villain is totally not a bad idea for the sequel and in no way a cliche. It just makes sense. However, Wart actually was in the early scripts and continued on in the film as a nonspeaking character, but he wasn't Koopa's brother. That was just a rumor. If anything, he'd be an underling that takes over in the ensuing power vacuum.

The cool thing is that Hoskins was in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? alongside Christopher, so it would have been interesting to see their chemistry in a second, somewhat more serious film.

Yeah, I can't really think of any other Mario villain that would fit for a sequel. Wart works because he could translate well into a human character, other enemies like Fawful just wouldn't work in a film. Count Bleck could work, or Booster, Wario too, but Wart just fits the best. He was in originally in the film's early scripts? That's cool. I can't really see how he would fit other than one of Koopa's assistants or just on one of those billboard names. My version of a "Mario movie Wart" doesn't have that trait of him being Koopa's brother, I'm just not fond of that rumor, really.

Yeah, it would be cool to see them together again! I do visualize my version of a sequel as much more serious, but with a tad of those humorous moments of course! I think Chris would make a good Wart because he just played the immaturely insane Judge Doom at the end of Roger Rabbit very well, and I imagine Wart would be played out the same way. I can't really see what Wart would look like as a human-like character though, gotta work on that one.

Simply put, no other Mario villain can work. People have thrown around Scapelli re-evolved into a neanderthal "Donkey Kong" or Wario has a parallel-world dino-Mario, but they just seem somewhat forced. Wart is just perfect on so many levels.

Yeah, he and Bloober worked in the devo chamber as technicians. In some versions of the script they were also close advisers, much like Sgt. Simon in the movie.

What about Smitty/Smitthy? from Super Mario RPG. He feels like the dictator type of person that coudl work for SMB2.

He could work for the most part, but not really in the same way he did for SMRPG, since the 'sword in the castle' thing wouldn't work in the style of in the SMB movie, and the ability to form into different creatures wouldn't really fit too.

I respectfully disagree. Fawful could work well as a film villain, but he is a character that would have to come along as other sequels would have developed. As a matter of fact, my "Take to the Stars" series uses Fawful as the primary villain in the later part of the story. Not to mention Fawful was a '00s character and was not around during the first film's creation. But, I could have seen him in later films if made into the new millenium.
