Assorted Merchandise Discussion

Postby Phlibbit » Tue Mar 24, 2009 9:15 pm

MODERATOR'S NOTICE: This thread was formerly known as the "Official SMB Merchandise Thread" up until merchandise received a dedicated sub-forum. Several discussions within this thread were then moved into their own topics, including Trading Cards Discussion, ERTL Toy Line Discussion and Coloring Book Discussion. This topic is now dedicated only to assorted merchandise too trivial to merit a dedicated thread.

All right, I think it's time to have a thread dedicated solely to the SMB movie merchandise, especially after it keeps popping up in random threads and we all like talking about it :)

So, what we can do for a while is you guys can post things you have and I can do the same. Or if you want to know about something in particular, more info, if I know anything about it, or if I have it, etc. Eventually I'll make a master list of all known merchandise on this top post, so it'll be a lot easier to organize by the time I get around to organizing it for the site.

Discuss :D

Even though I keep being lazy and haven't been providing many pics, I did take a nice, crappy iPhone-quality teaser shot of my plethora of SMB merchandise:

Holy crap. That is awesome and definitely a tease. :D Can't wait. Been checking out some stuff on ebay seeing some really neat stuff! I forget, how old were you when it came out? I don't have too much, of course never set out to collect it. The 6 figs, the Todd Strasser novel, the soundtrack, the DVD, the movie pin, t-shirt, trading card set and box, 2 of the holographic cards, thermos(used to have the lunchbox) audio cassette, no longer have the poster/glasses. I really wanna get a movie poster especially since they don't look to be too sought after :D

There's a crazy looking foreign laserdisc I saw on ebay. I'm interested in finding out more about the talking dolls and the police car/devo playset.

:D Thought you'd like that. I'm 21, so I was 5 when it came out, heh. And I wasn't even into video games or anything. It wasn't until...1998 or 1999 I think that I saw it. I was just getting into the N64 and Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie. I saw a snippet of the SMB movie on TV and I was going to one of my friends' house; we rented it that night and the rest is history, lol.

And I actually have a lot of extra merchandise that I could let go of for a nominal fee. I guess I'll get to that later though.

And that laserdisc is pretty cool. That's the main japanese poster image and it's also on the japanese movie soundtrack.

Ah cool. I probably don't need to spend much more money on Mario stuff, I have more Ghostbusters stuff than I know what to do with already  I still remember seeing commercials for Super Mario Bros when I was younger. Albeit a long time ago, I remember all the possibilities thinking about what the Mario movie would be. Then being excited to get a souvenir pin at the movie. I guess I must have liked it enough to get some toys, the book and stuff. I remember even being excited for "the sequel" that was set up :D

Anyway awesome preview. Can't wait!

Mario in Cracked Magazine! Not really official merchandise so much as a spoof/making fun of. Do you have this one Phlibbit? Not mine found on ebay. I'm curious to see how bad they tore the movie a new one. lol

Yep, I have that one! Very interesting because the movie was "popular" enough to spoof, LOL. It's actually pretty cool to look at. Yes I'll scan it when I get to everything.

I USED to have a I think a Chinese bootleg of the DVD before it came out. It was regoin 0, and I think in 4x3, it also was missing the tid bit at the end of the credits. Funny story, after I bought it waiting so long thinking it wouldn't come out on DVD, a week later I read it was coming out. But the covered had Mario and Luigi holding their tools in the air in front of a fire background, and I think the title was in Chinese. I really wish I didn't sell it years ago.

I would've thought there might have been a comic book adaptation since there usually are for most of those kinds of movies Guess not though since it hasn't surfaced that I've seen. I did see some sweet Pogs on ebay.

There was a coloring book adapation, I used to have a lot of them. The yellow one though, through out the whole thing the Bros are in their red and green jumpsuits.

Well I was going through my old stuff again, I found a keychain, it has the BROS in their jumpsuits, its the scene where Luigi tells Mario he can fly. Also I found two pins, one is a common pic of the BROS holding their tools in the air, and DINO hatten in th ebackground and Koopa's eyes looking down at them. The second pin I found is YOSHI. It's clear as that, it's Yoshi standing next to his name YOSHI, also his tongue is sticking out.

Last but not least, I found the rest of the action figures. I have the entire set(exclude devo chamber, the Koopa car, and the two giant talking figures), unfortunetly my Goomba is missing his jacket. I have all the accessories except for Mario's toolbelt, looks like his quote "nobody touches my tools" was a lie.

I have an official Toy Devo Gun that I bought off of ebay a few years ago that I am particularly proud of owning since it was so freaking hard to find, and I actually talked to ERTL a few years before that to get a complete list of the Mario toys they produced, and apparently they made SMB walkie talkies, that I have yet to find, and the 12 inch talking figures are just as difficult, though I see that Phillibit has one.

You're all better off seeing them in their full size glory at megaupload. Some awesome stuff! I failed Trevor lol

I'm just jesting, obviously. I have all of that stuff except for the Devo Gun, the Paint n' Marker Book, and the two articles I posted up there. Nice stuff. I'd really like some better scans of those things for the site, especially that elusive looking advertisement. Don't have the devo gun box, do you?

I can't believe I never brought this up, but I used to have the actual real video store poster add that hung on the window, it flashed back to me when I saw a reproduction of it on ebay right here http://cgi.ebay.com/SUPER-MARIO-BROS-MOVIE-POSTER_W0QQitemZ280363625334QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4146f96b76&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1205%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50. It's exactly what I used to have, I have no idea where it went, but I might juts buy this and stash it away and act like I never even lost it.

Yeah I'm quoting myself. I hope nobody bought this thing, becuase I did and boy was it a waste. It's just a poster of the same picture they had on the link. I used to own this video store add and was really dissapointed in this thing. It's nowhere near the size or made of card board. Big rip off, good news though, I can't find the guys account on ebay anymore and he is gone, he was getting a lot of negatives, I took a chance at it. Bad news though, I lost 16 bucks, and now own a crappy poster that looks like a bootleg poster at some crappy carnival.

I actually have a picture of me as a kid somewhere standing in front of the add as it was hanging on my wall. It wasn't a poster, it was a full blown card board cut out that was 3 pieces. The size of it was slightly bigger then the wall in my room. So it was really big, had to have been atleast 7 or 8 feet tall (not exagerating heights like in other threads on this forum) The top half was the regular giant M with the Marios standing in front of it, underneath it was a square that said SUPER MARIO BROS and, below that was another square for release date, and critic reviews. The SMB logo and the critic reviews along with release date dangled on a string, so as if it were floating. I really wish I still had this, I have no idea how I could lose something so huge.

Aha! So...something like this?

And what you got was a picture of it?

And BTW, the cardboard pieces alone are around 5 feet, measured vertically. So with the strings and space when hung up, yeah it would be around 6-7 feet.

Yeop, that is exactly what I used to have, but now it's long gone. It's been so long since I've seen it, (i was probably about 10 the last time I did) so I honestly forgot how big it was, all I knew is that it was huge.

I have also my childhood Mario and Luigi with paint scuffed up all over missing their belts, I remember my brother had a Luigi variant that had lighter brown hair. Weird! I wish I could have the Police car and the Devo playset though I hope to make a playset of it myself one day though its probably another project I won't get done any time soon. :D

One of my favorite things, a little beat to hell but I still remember waiting in line opening day to see it

All I've ever owned from this movie are the original VHS, the official DVD, and all the figures, most of whom have been lost to the Void in my closet...sad, but that's what happens when you find other things to enjoy.

Never owned the police car--though I think I saw it in FAO Schwarz once--or the Devo Chamber. However, judging from an image of the box art in Tomart's Action Figure Guide, I can safely conjecture that the Chamber is a patch on the He-Man/Masters of the Universe Slime Pit, but with an "exchange chamber" added so that you can turn your action figures into Goombas...as a matter of fact, I believe the playset came with an exclusive Snake Goomba (the one with goggles/blinders on). It also featured a pair of pipe-cannons that fired missiles.

I was always disappointed that the figures' weapons failed to work after 2-3 days of playing with them, y'know?

...Anybody want to scan the back of the action-figure packages? I'm coming on a bit nostalgic for those fake newspaper headlines.
