Super Mario Bros Movie: The Game?

Postby 1upmushroom » Fri Jul 31, 2009 3:19 pm

I thought of an idea. Since they didn't think of a game for the movie, "I" decided to make one. I mean since the genious GAME MAKER came out, I could probably make a good game based on the movie. The only problem, I don't have the plot, items, enemies, designs, guides and stuff. So I need YOUR help! Just private message me your vision of a Mario movie videogame. :D I COULD make the sprites and items but I would need some sheets.

...I was working on a game at one point. I had made a lot of sprites but coding it turned out to be too big a task for me to handle. Here's some of the better sprites I had made.

Why not? I know I'm never gonna finish the game. I have more if you want. Most of the enemies are taken from Super Princess Peach, but the background stuff is mostly original or heavily edited from various games.

Cool stuff! I attempted to make my own SMB Movie game in the past too, using The Games Factory. I'll post the sprites I did one of these days, although they're HUGE and it was quite silly making them that big, lol.

As far as music, the score is available of course. I could probably whip up a midi version of some of the movies music. The main theme or whatnot

I would rather wait for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, then play a game based on the movie.

But honestly, if a game were made based on the movie, I could see it being like Metal Slug 3, the thwomp boots as an accessory would be cool. But how will you have time to make a movie, and a game at the same time?

I've often thought about making a game based on the movie, or, rather, one reinterpreting it. Unfortunately, graphics are always my biggest roadblock, so to speak. I'm just not very skilled in that area at all. I have, however, managed to create a style I'm rather proud of, and have made several characters from the movie in it. Here's my Mario as a sample:

Image

Again, though, I'm not very good at spriting and I've tried so hard to make poses for Mario there, but to no avail. With that in mind, and the fact I could never pull off any kind of background, the idea ultimately went nowhere. The sprites have since been relegated to a personal hobby of mine; one I occasionally work at, but never really show off. This is probably the first time any one of 'em has been posted in public.

If you're really serious about this, then good luck. Making a game isn't easy, and it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to pull off.

He-hey, it's Zack! Good to see you on here! (It's me, Nix, using a clever alias!)

EDIT: The idea of having Bullet Bill as a train is genius. It should really be an above-ground monorail, though, which departs from a cannon-shaped tunnel.

Well, if you've seen some of the preproduction artwork on the site, that's exactly what they had planned. Probably didn't get that far because of budget reasons though. Actually...in the early draft script, there's actually a scene that takes place on the monorail! OMG it would've been a bullet bill monorail. Gah...

I wonder, is there a way to make the Stomper cartridges a workable gaming mechanic? Something like, they give you an extra "boost" added to your normal jump, but you have to pick them up/buy them. The Fire Flower, I suspect, would be replaced by a wooden crate with a Flamethrower inside.

Yeah. Just have a script that when you grab a Stomper cart, your jump switches from jump1 to jump2, for example. Or, say, if you were doing a SMW hack, the Thwomp Stompers could graphically replace the Cape, but function the same way.

I had ideas of the levels

1. play as Mario and Luigi, you must repair the pipes that the Scapelli's have broken
2. confront the enemies as you make your way in Dinohattan searching for Daisy
3. escape the devo chamber and fight the koopa troopas and goombas
4. use the police car to escape to the koopahari desert (Mario Kart) using the flamethrower to get rid of your enemies
5. head with Iggy and Spike to the Koopa's Tower, be carefull of the piranha plants and sniffits
6. find Daisy in the tower
7. play as Mario to rescue Daniella and the Brooklin girls
8. fight Koopa using your air stompers and flamethrower
9. play as Luigi: find your tools for pull out the rock of the meteorite
10. fight Koopa in the real world using mushrooms as defensive/ofensive weapons
11. final boss: defeat koopa using bob-ombs and devo guns

items
stompers: double jump
bullet bill: cartriges for your boots
bob-ombs: only avaliable in the final boss
fungus: extra life
flamethrower and devo gun: weapons
tools: open doors and as weapon

There's a game on the Miniclip gaming website called Dirk Valentine and the Fortress of Steam. We should use the gameplay mechanic of the "chain gun" for the Chain Chomps that we were discussing in another thread.

Also, the Dinohattan levels provide a great opportunity for in-jokes within the graffiti...stuff like Prime Evil wuz here and Who Watches the Watchmen? (unfinished, of course).

Stuff like this really makes me wish I knew how to write code for games. If someone else is serious about doing this, I'd be willing to make some more sprites.

Also, I found this strange link while browsing YTMND http://smbtmtg.ytmnd.com/
I went to the site in the description, but found nothing to do with Mario on it :(

Is that in human form or t-rex form?

Yeah, so I was referred here by a friend of Phlibbit's. I just want to get to the point; I've had this idea for a game based on the SMB movie for a while, maybe it could aid you guys into fleshing this out.

I originally intended this game concept for the DS, but it's better off as a web game since it's based on a licensed property, I believe this idea could transition well into web form.

Image

I don't intend for the game to look like this, this is just to give you a basic idea of how I envision it, which is why I skimped out on many details, especially a background. The player is controlling Mario in this concept drawing.

Here's some game info that I wrote several months ago; how I envision the gameplay and such.

Super Mario Bros. movie video game

Controls:

Left = Walk left

Right = Walk right

Down = Duck (while walking = Dactyl)

Up = Go through doors/climb

A = Jump (holding down A = hovering [while wearing fueled thwomp stompers])

B = Punch/utilize carried item

Y = Throw away carried item/put away carried tool

Hold X+Left = Carry/put away item #1

X = Carry/put away item #2

Hold X+Right = Carry/put away item #3

Start = Pause game/access options

Select = Put away item/tool.

L = Separate Brothers

R = Switch playable brother

Collectibles:

Thwomp Stompers = When attained, thwomp stompers are automatically worn. Thwomp stompers allow you to jump higher than usual. Holding A while falling down makes you hover and allows you to stay in the air longer. Two bullet bill cartridges are needed in order to use these boots, and when you do, the cartridges are considered carried items, so you can't take out another item while actively using the stomper. Once your cartridges run out of energy, your boots will be rendered powerless as before until you get two more cartridges. Getting hit by an enemy can make you lose your stompers.

Lizards-On-Buns: These are commonly sold by food vendors. Collect them to raise your health by a fraction.

Snakes-On-A-Stick: Harder to find than Lizards-On-Buns. These restore your health back to maximum capacity.

Koopa Coins: The currency of Dinohattan. Collect koopa coins to buy goodies at shops and vendors.

Items (you can carry up to three items in your tool belt and carry one in your hand):

Stun Stick = Damage and stun enemies that are close and right in front of you. When it runs out of fuel, you can hit people with it.

Toaster = Shoot fireballs that'll go long distances. When it runs out of fuel, you can hit people with it.

Mushroom = Mushrooms can protect you from devo guns, but not much else.

Prehistoric Mushroom = Can protect against anything until it wears out, also a good object for throwing.

Plunger = Can be used to render your enemy motionless for a while. It's effects are longer than the stun stick but it does no damage.

Bob-Omb = When used, you must first wind up the bob-omb, which will determine how far it will walk before it explodes. Keep pressing B while standing to wind the Bob-Omb and then press B while crouching to release it.

Bullet Bill Cartridge = Collect and utilize two bullet bills in order to use your thwomp stompers (two cartridges account for one entire item and takes up only one pouch of your tool belt). One cartridge can only be used to hit enemies with, but when thrown it's like an actual bullet and is more useful. If you press Y while wearing fueled thwomp stompers, you'll launch one of your boots by itself to damage enemies. The other thwomp stomper will replace the bullet bill cartridges in your tools and can be used like the previous boot.

Fire Extinguisher = Keep this handy when your partner gets hit by a toaster. Fire Extinguishers can also be used to blind enemies for a while, but use it wisely, it doesn't last forever.

Flashlight = Press B to turn flashlights on and off. Flashlights let you see better in dark areas, but they too use energy.

Devo Guns:

Toad will give Luigi these items near the end of the game for the ultimate showdown between Mario, Luigi, and King Koopa.

Tools:

Tools are needed to solve plumbing puzzles and can be accessed quickly on the touch screen. Just touch any tool to switch it with the item in your hand. If you have no items you can use any tool to hit enemies with.

Enemies:

Scapelli's goons

Dinohattan civilians

Allosaurs

Dinohattan police

Goombas

Fire snakes

Albatoss

Areas:

The Streets of Brooklyn

The Excavation site

The Crater Site

Koopa Square

The Police Department

The Koopahari Desert

The Boom-Boom Bar

Koopa's Tower

Levels:

Mission 1: Drive to the Riverfront Cafe.

Mission 2: Drive to the excavation site and back to the apartment.

Missions 3: Pick up Daisy at the excavation site and Daniella at her apartment and drive to The Bella Napoli.

Mission 4: Race to the excavation site.

Mission 5: Get Mario at the apartment and run back to the excavation site to fix the pipes.

Mission 6: Find Daisy.

Mission 7: Follow Iggy and Spike.

Mission 8: Explore Dinohattan.

Mission 9: Defeat Sergeant Simon (Boss: Sargeant Simon)

Mission 10: Escape from the police department.

Mission 11: Drive away from the police.

Mission 12: Find a way out of the Koopahari desert. (Boss: Iggy and Spike)

Mission 13: Hijack a sludge-gulper.

Mission 14: Drive into Dinohatten and go to Iggy's place, then drive to the Boom-Boom Bar.

Mission 15: Find Big Bertha and steal the pendant.

Mission 16: Escape from the Boom-Boom Bar.

Mission 17: Find Daisy in Koopa's tower.

Mission 18: Find Daniella in Koopa's Tower.

Mission 19: Escape through the ice tunnel.

Mission 20: Run away from Koopa.

Mission 21: Run to the meteorite crater.

Mission 22: Fend off Koopa.

Mission 23: Run back to Mario.

Mission 24: Defeat Koopa. (Boss: King Koopa)

Nothing's definite, I'm just throwing this out there as a suggestion, but you guys can definitely come to me if you need any more ideas.

Also, when I wrote all of this I was trying to be loyal to the movie, but I think I made a mistake. Were the thwomp stompers powered by one or two bullet bill cartridges? I can't remember.

RE: Bullet Bills

As far as I know, Mario only put the one cartridge into the shoe onscreen. Also, Big Bertha says, "You put the cartridge in, and click your heels together."

Let me go check the designs and I'll get back to you.

I would imagine it's one cartridge per boot, though how many uses you get out of a single cartridge is unknown. In a game, though, I'd just make it singular for simplicity...

I'd have to agree. Perhaps the best way to implement the cartridges into the game would be by having them power a "Jump Meter." Pressing the Boot button while wearing them would allow for quick acrobatics and long jumps while holding it would provide for a prolonged boost into the air; in each case, the meter would run down until a new cartridge is found.

I was thinking the Devo gun should be available from the first very level they are in the Mushroom Kingom...er...Dinohattan, and it should have power ups or add ons like the Sega Genesis Ghostbusters game, here are some Devo gun power ups i thought of: Ice Beam, Flame Thrower, Time Stopper, 3 way shooter, Electrobolt, Fungus shooter.

RE: Redstar

Your proposal for the "Jump Meter" implies the need for a mouse. It could be interesting, like one of those "Rocketman" games where you have to get the trajectory of the boost just right. All in all, this is pointing to something away from the usual run and jump dynamics of the typical Mario game and into its own thing entirely.

RE: jka12002

Nice idea you have there. Some of those uses overlap, but it would be interesting to design enemies that can be stopped by one thing but not another (e.g. a Fry Guy burns through Fungus but is stopped by Ice). I dunno, but I'm actually keen on having different weapons rather than add-ons for the one thing...I badly want to see the Chain Chomps implemented as a grappling-hook throughout the game!

That or why not use music from other games that would go with this one? I think this track would be cool for the first Dinohattan stage:

When it comes to the playable characters, would you guys want just Mario and Luigi? or some of the other characters as unlockables? A decent line up would be Mario,Luigi,Goomba Toad and Big Birtha. Maybe have a cheat where you could play as King Koopa :p

It'd be interesting to play as Daisy exploring Koopa's suite and later escaping from the tower. It could be reminiscent of her role in the original Paper Mario.

In the Wizard of Oz game for SNES the characters change automatically on every stage, like if you were on the level in the wicked forest it changes you from Dorothy to the Tin Man. Something like that could work as well.

Branching storylines, that's what we need. Each character, save Mario and Luigi, who share a storyline (with a few exceptions), gets his or her own storyline.
