RiffTrax Presents: Super Mario Bros. (Full Length Movie!)

Postby Serum » Fri Mar 21, 2014 3:27 pm

This morning I got an email from RiffTrax (the stars of cult TV's Mystery Science Theater 3000) and they announced the release of their most asked-for riff ever, our favorite movie, Super Mario Bros.! If you haven't seen the riff, go buy it, it's 9.99 and you get the movie with their funny commentary in MP4 form for your phone, tablet and computer! I've already watched it, it's hilarious!

Today is a great day for me, because it sees my favorite TV show (Mystery Science Theater 3000) riffing on my all-time favorite movie, Super Mario Bros.! Think of it like a celebrity roast, they make fun of the movie and even though we like it, it's still very funny to listen to because they bring up a lot of great points, especially to the 'laymen' of the movie. Go check it out!

Indeed, I got it as soon as I heard it announced.

For those of you unfamiliar with the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000, it was a show about a man and his two robot friends who are held captive in a space movie theater orbiting Earth and are forced to watch terrible movies with the villain hoping to find the worst movie of all time in order to use it to somehow take over the world. Here's an example of one of their finest, most accessible episodes...

...RiffTrax is the spiritual successor to MST3k, featuring the three main actors from the show 'riffing' contemporary movies. MST3k ran for over ten years with almost 200 episodes on cable before its untimely cancelation by the former Sci-Fi Channel in 1999, it hasn't seen airtime since 2002 and RiffTrax was started a few years ago in order to continue in the tradition that the show started.

Go check it out!

I felt one of the best riffs in they had for it was when Mario and Luigi are crawling through the ventilation system of Koopa's Twin Towers and Mario kicks the vent open from the inside and Kevin, in the angriest, loudest, most stereotypical gruff Italian accent yells: "IT'S-A ME, MARIO!!!"

That is really funny. I really don't want to pay 10 bucks for one audio file though. I'll probably just have to watch the best of clips or something.

It's not just the audio, it's the video as well. For 10 bucks you get a DVD ISO to burn to disc, as well as a low, medium and high-rez MP4 and a file for 'classic' iPods that's also smaller as well as the option to stream the video. Five formats of the movie with the commentary for 10 dollars.

I've read a lot of comments from those who enjoy the film that state that this commentary was decidedly unfunny. Others have said that it's only the preview that falls flat while the actual commentary is much more humorous.

Either way I appreciate anyone bringing the film back to the Internet's attention. It gives us a lot of people to talk to via Twitter and other sites. It's even brought a few new readers to the comic! :)

The preview is a bit lacking, yes. And there are moments in the film where they fall a little flat, but it may be because they're not used to a movie of the magnitude that is Super Mario Bros., which is saying something considering they did Manos: The Hands of Fate twenty years ago.

And since the people at RiffTrax somehow got permission to let others download the movie with their commentary in it, that means a portion of the proceeds go to the makers of the Super Mario Bros. movie, as well, so everybody wins!

I dunno, they riffed The Room(which honestly became my new all time favorite movie), I only watched the best of clips of it, but there are some parts where they are just so dumb founded they don't even know what to say other than just laugh at the movie.

How do we know that's true?

They offer video on demand stuff if they can acquire the rights to use a movie with the commentary embedded in it, as opposed to the usual "download an audio-file and sync it to your TV" which they use because they can't get the copyright holder's permissions to let people download the movie with their commentary. It's a long, arduous process, but that's basically how it's always worked.
