Sad news, today. Dennis Hopper, who portrayed the nefarious King Koopa in "Super Mario Bros," died today, after a long battle with prostate cancer.

Yep, He was a great villian actor but he'll be remembered by us as King Koopa. Rest in peace, have a good time with Brando and Lawrence Olivier up there.

Aw, crap. At least we were all prepared for it. I'm gonna have to go back and see some of the Hopper movies I haven't yet seen, like Blue Velvet.

Also see "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" (the one from the 80s) and "Mad Dog Morgan."
He was a fine actor who made even terrible movies (like Waterworld) worth watching.

Definitely a sad day and yeah at least we knew it wasn't going to be long when we heard before about the cancer. I really need to check out some of his other movies. I grew up knowing him from Mario and Speed. RIP Dennis Hopper. Hopefully he went without much pain.

R.I.P. Dennis Hopper. I finally saw Blue Velvet and Easy Rider, and it helped me realize his versatility as an actor. He'll definitely be missed.

I was genuinely surprised and saddened when I heard this. My first thought was his wonderful role as Koopa, then my mind shifted to everything else he had done, and finally my regrets he won't be able to do more. He had a lot more roles in him.

RIP, Dennis.

Awww man I was really upset when Dennis died, most of all due to a rather shocking little factoid: he died on a day when another unjustly shunned videogame movie -namely Street Fighter (yes the Van Damme one), which happens to be my favourite movie- came on TV in my country! Thankfully nobody has made any cruel jokes about... when Dennis died (yes this genuine fear did indeed come to mind :( ), but you can never be too careful!

Thankfully my own heartache has since been soothed with not one but THREE airings of Street Fighter, plus of course even now I still pay tribute to Dennis (well you gotta agree it is... uhhh, respectful to show respect...):

-As we had agreed to when we learned of Dennis's terminal cancer... mum and I sat and watched Super Mario Bros., also yes I wore my Bowser T-shirt for the occasion. In fact we watched the movie on the day of Dennis's funeral so yes you could say we paid our own last respects on the day 0:-)

-I paid a number of Mario-based (and of course focusing on Bowser) tributes which would indeed apply under the 'You Know You're Obsessed with SMB' thread - no I'm not THAT big a fan, but again I feel these tributes are very respectful 0:-)

-Mum's face lit up when I bought her New Super Mario Bros. Wii and the guide for it. And yes we have the limited edition Wii version of Super Mario All-Stars

-As well as the Mario-based tributes, yes I did go and see Alpha & Omega (Dennis's final film)... and I was touched at it being dedicated to Dennis's memory. I was thinking about waiting a while to see it... but I was convinced to see it on release day because McDonald's were doing Alpha & Omega toys with their Happy Meals, so yes I had one such meal and received a toy of Kate the wolf. Oh and guess what? At the cinema where I saw Alpha & Omega... there was a lucky dip machine dispensing Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story DS stylii, there were five in the whole set. I had four goes and won almost the full set!

Oh, and I was talking with RedStar the other day, he has accepted my offer for me to become a 'Koopa Troopa' for the site and happily deal with any troublemakers who make really nasty comments about the movie - i.e. expressing extreme hate about it, and unappreciation of the immense amount of thought and respect that went into creating it (as opposed to a simple negative opinion). Again, I made my offer -and of course searched for and found this site- out of respect for Dennis Hopper... most of all because of... well, you know. Avenge Dennis's (and, to an obvious extent, Raul Julia's) death, if you will!

And yes, also in light of when we lost Dennis I feel the same way this site feels about SMB: people should at least appreciate the immense amount of thought and respect that went into creating all game movies, be they live-action and/or animated... and keep any extreme hate/negativity to themselves. When I first came across this site and read the part about getting people to appreciate the effort made in making SMB, I was like "Good god folks you are absolutely right!"

Super Mario Bros.: the Movie was what first opened the doors to my love and appreciation for this remarkable actor. Therefore, it was very sad for me to hear that he had died.

As a child, my preferences were aimed more toward the villains than the heroes in films, series, etc., and King Koopa was always my favorite character in the movie. In fact, Dennis Hopper is probably the main reason why I fell in love with it as much as I did. (I only own one of the action figures, and it's the Koopa one.)

Koopa was Hopper's first and truest role for most of us. Many of us grew up viewing Hopper as Mario's ultimate nemesis. He truly added something to the role that no one else could have.

He always was good at those "big bad" characters, wasn't he? I remember watching Speed on cable many years ago...a "funfact" popped up on the screen which said that, originally, Jeff Daniels (the partner) was supposed to be the villain, but later on they brought Dennis Hopper in to play a disgruntled ex-cop when it was feared that Daniels couldn't pull off the necessary villainy.

I allways thought he would have made a perfect Magneto in an X-men movie. no offence to Ian Mckellen fanatics.

Also found it interesting he died the day after the release date for Mario Bros.

Ah well, R.I.P. Dennis Hopper! :(
