Little things you notice...
Re: Little things you notice...
It sure is "Spikeasaurus." Also, I'm pretty sure that Iggy's is "Ignatious" or something like that, a play on "Ignotius."

Check Spike's turn in the Devo Chamber. He gives Iggy's name as "Ignatius" in an effort to "show off."

Yep, that's exactly where it's mentioned.

LOL that is a good one. Goes to show the bare basics of Mario were intact, "Run, duck, jump"

Re: Little things you notice...
Okay, seeing that just convinces me that SMB is the best video-game movie ever made! Some would argue that the SMB movie is only full of shout-outs and references while the move itself has no resemblance to the games, but this, as well as several other references, are just so specific you cannot deny they had some familiarity with the games.
Re: Little things you notice...
Wow, what an awesome find! However, it's hilariously obvious that that isn't Bob Hoskins.
Re: Little things you notice...
haha all the more reason to have him duck I guess.
there were a few cool hard to spot signs I saw, I'll have to try and remember where they were. When they first enter the world, I see the KOOPA CAN'T LOSE newspaper but the other one looks like it says KOOPA FINGERS FUNGUS? or is it KOOPA ANGERS FUNGUS lol

Re: Little things you notice...
Another thing I've always noticed, seeing Mario is the big brother, how he looks after Luigi throughout the movie. For examples, after Luigi picks up the mushroom and the Bros. kick out the air vent, Mario peeks his head out, but holds Luigi back, checking if the area is clear. Later in the movie when Luigi has the Devo guns and flies to where Mario is with his newly acquired air stompers, Koopa fires a fireball at them. Mario yells "DUCK!" and pulls Luigi down with him. I thought those moments were pretty cool.

Re: Little things you notice...
Not really foreshadowing or anything, the last car before it goes into the Mario apartment at the beginning is a police car of course that looks not far off from where they end up later in the movie

You know what? I kinda think the producer's knew more than what we tought. Heres another interesting Mario reference. Or coincedence. I guess they WERE going for first game look of Bowser.

Original Super Mario Brothers (the first game.) Art.

look at each other's hair and tell me you don't see a similarity of the color at all. And I now see why the monster look was out, because he'd look a little goofy with his blonde hair and eyebrows, or in the movie terms at least blonde hair.

Phlibb needs to write up a definitive review of the movie highlighting all its accomplishments, as well as its downfalls (yet in a fair manner) that we can link to at the ready. In fact, the (soon-to-be) list of references would be enough to shut up anyone.

Nice find there, 1up!
I'll be honest, looking back at the movie now that I'm older, it is kinda... bad, but I can't bring myself to hate it because it's Mario. My mom introduced me to the series when I was like 2, and I've been a fan of it since. Seeing all these references and whatnot, makes me appreciate the movie a bit more. This is a good thread, lets keep it going.
A few more possible references to the games. Recreated boss battles, or just plain coincidence?

haha totally
Not really a little thing but I never used to think of the game as being a prequel but it really makes sense to show how they became "Super"
if anything it would've been cool the ending made a lot of sense to set stuff up, helping them drum up some more business from their adventure publicity. Maybe even showing Mario and Luigi using the red and green suits and maybe "pimp their ride", well maybe a cool graphic on the van similar to the game title SUPER MARIO BROS Plumbing rather than the old beat up one. Maybe Mario getting with the times and would establish their choice to make more of an image for themselves to help business. Even maybe having their own commercial. What I think could have been cool, the Mario Bros famous theme if it became a sort of jingle for them, its a catchy tune and if they put some kind of lame plumbing lyrics to it. Similar to the "Do the Mario" only for their plumbing business..
I think a sequel could have built on some of these to set them up or would have been maybe more fun than the cliffhanger ending or if they could've worked it in as well. Though the pacing might've been a bit long.

No, I think that the movie needed the cliffhanger ending. It wouldn't be as enduring if it wasn't included in the movie. As fans of the movie, the question that will always haunt us would be "what if". "What if" a sequel was made? What happened to the Mushroom Kingdom that Daisy would be all out in full battle gear?
Working sequel bits into the actual movie or omitting the cliffhanger would have done more harm then go, IMHO.

I actually noticed those, kind of. And thanks, like I said, I fully know why the monster look was out, because of the way he would look. The blonde hair would ruin the bowser creature, and he would look more like a joke than a serious effect. Though, they could've also just made his hair red, but I guess it's a nice find.

Not a reference or anything here, but it's just something that never seemed right to me. In the Boom Boom Bar scene, the Bros. are shown wearing outfits that originally belonged to Iggy's ex-wife. Shouldn't Mario be wearing the red outfit and not Luigi? lol.

Yet another addition for the site. I know how it feels having all these ideas, since I've been working on a site myself. Still fun adding even the little things, if I can do at least one thing (like correcting typos) a day. Looking forward to where the site ends up.

Are you quite sure of that? Mario's pose in that picture certainly looks like the one Bob Hoskins maintained behind the scenes.

My cousin noticed that when Mario falls into the rock, he changes colors on his way to Dinohattan, kinda like when Mario gets a Starman power-up.

Phlibbit's edit: I took that big pic out and got a nice screen capture of the scene.
Something else I noticed, Is that when Mario comes to the rescue of the "Missing Brooklyn Girls" they walk toward the air vent and on the wall you can see the Koopa's Troopas poster. This one:

I think the approach the writers and directors took in creating the story negates the possibility the portal was based or inspired by anything in particular in the games. While the writers did play Super Mario Bros. 2 the most, I think it's a bit of a stretch to think this particular concept is a reference considering how general a concept it is.

I just noticed that Lena's red shawl is reminiscent of the one Daisy's mother wore in the beginning of the film. Not entirely the same, but similar enough it makes me think perhaps Lena was trying to get "in-character" for the role of a Portal-Keeper?

...A Portal-Keeper? It's a new one on me. I always assumed it was a Goomba coat--at least the one Daisy's mom was wearing. It'd make sense for her to put on some kind of a disguise so that she could get past whatever guards were there. Lena too for that matter.

Re: Little things you notice...
I meant the red shawl Lena is wearing is reminiscent of the similar costume Daisy's mother wears under the Goomba coat. The Portal-Keepers were the elite society that guarded the meteorite chamber and the portal between worlds before Koopa killed them off, leaving only Daisy's mother and Daisy herself as the sole survivors. There's no confirmation, but I like to think that the red shawl was the standard outfit of the Portal-Keeper "nuns".

Ah, yes, yes, yes, now I remember! I know what you're talking about...maybe that is the case.
Trouble is, there was never any mention about Portal-Keepers in the movie to the best of my knowledge. Cutting-room floor material perhaps?

Re: Little things you notice...
Perhaps cutting-room material. If the shooting script by Solomon/Rowe is any indication to go on, the Portal-Keepers would have been mentioned in extended Koopa scenes either cut from the final film or through revisions done by Parker and Terry. The latter seems more likely as at that point they wanted to make the movie simpler, not more complicated. The Portal-Keepers were just backstory not entirely necessary for a film they wanted to get out in theaters.

I was reading in wikipedia and found something curious:
Eddie Scapelli?
Also, did you notice the haircut of Max Headroom (created by Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton?)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Maxhe ... pegMan.jpg
[Gianni Russo (Scapelli)] claims that he has mob connections and that his uncle was a soldier in the Gambino crime family. There are claims that the Gambinos persuaded Francis Ford Coppola to cast Russo as Carlo Rizzi in the Godfather. Also, Russo claims that he started a fledgling career in organized crime working as an errand boy and mob associate for Frank Costello as an adolescent but later abandoned the dangerous and volatile lifestyle of organized crime.

yeah the hair looks very much like Koopa's hairstyle haha. The Max Headroom British film is up in parts on youtube:

Its really good actually! And I've been watching the tv series version from netflix. Now that I think of it, Super Mario Bros. is very cyberpunk considering some of the outfits, hairstyles, and technology are pretty similar to that of Max Headroom (except for the whole dino theme of course)

SMB is almost a spiritual successor to Max Headroom. A lot of parallels can be drawn between the two. Hopefully we can make those similarities much more clear in the future.

This isn't necessarily a reference, but something freaky I noticed. Does anyone remember the scene in which our world and the Mushroom Kingdom combine and the World Trade Center changes to Koopa's Tower? Well, while it's changing and the South Tower is dematerializing, there's a plane that flies directly past the building. When I saw that my jaw dropped!

Samantha Mathis portrayed both Daisy and her own mother. They utilized a new hairstyle and heavy makeup to make her look eerily different.
