Super Mario Legacy- a professional concept sequel trailer

Postby masongoliver » Mon Jul 04, 2011 4:08 am

Hello, I would like to share this trailer I created as a sequel concept to the Super Mario Bros. film.

I am a professional trailer and video editor. I've been making fake concept trailers as a hobby since 2004. I have also done some real trailer projects for some real film producers and independent directors. This is just the latest pet project of mine. As a Mario fan since the '80s, I always wanted to make a Mario trailer, but never had the idea or the proper clips to simulate an "alternative" movie trailer to the 1993 film. This trailer took roughly 48 hours to make, literally 2 full days including text creation, video ripping and most importantly, sound editing.

I always like to make "original" concept trailers rather than rehash stuff made by other people. It wasn't until recently that I got the idea for a new Mario story, but not a re-telling of the tradition Mario tale, rather, the next progression in the Mario universe (even though, like the Simpsons, time never moves forward in the Mario universe...lol)

I thought of this idea for the children of Mario and Luigi as being the next generation of "Mario Brothers". In the tradition Mario pattern, there's 2 male and 1 female as the main protagonist. Following that model, The Mario brothers have 3 kids. Mario has 2 sons, and Luigi has 1 daughter.

I also wanted to give long time Mario fans a sense that the Mario universe has grown with them, by making the story darker and more mature. This story deals with the real world consequences of Mario and Luigi's actions and how those actions affect their children. It also delves into Mario's world view and his psyche. What is real and fantasy is sometimes a mystery for Mario and it creates a wall that separates his sense of duty to the Mushroom kingdom and his duty as a father.

Summary of the story:

Since Mario and Luigi returned from the Mushroom kingdom and defeating King of the Koopas, Bowser; the dynamic duels have left their adventures behind them and settled for a normal life in our world. In their absence, Princess Peach and Daisy gave birth to the children of Mario and Luigi. Prince Henry and John, sons of Mario and Princess Poppy, daughter of Luigi.

When Bowser rises from the grave and begins a quest for revenge, he conquers the Mushroom kingdom. In their desperation, Peach and Daisy sends the children into our world hoping to protect them from King Koopa. Mario and his wife takes in Henry and John, while Luigi (unmarried) takes in Poppy.

10 years later, Luigi receives a message from Daisy crying out for help. Luigi unwillingly leaves Poppy in the care of his friend and begins his search for Daisy. Luigi dies from the search after realizing it was a Bowser trap. Mario, not knowing Luigi's demise, becomes a victim of a mysterious car crash, His sons is left to believe Mario did not survive the accident.

Mario, barely alive, leaves to search for Luigi and hunt down their assassins. His search left him blinded and lost in between the realm of both our world and the mushroom kingdom. Another 10 years have passed, mysterious disasters begin to appear around the world. Henry, John and Poppy becomes the eventual target. Their lives takes a turn when they realize their true bloodline and their inherent powers. Their mission becomes clear when the balance of both worlds is laid before them in a desperate struggle with Bowser and his minions.

While Poppy takes John deep into the heart of Bowser's kingdom, Henry accidentally encounters his estranged father Mario whom he thought was dead. Mario explains to Henry that he kept himself away from the children in order to hide them from Bowser's assassins. But soon realizes that his sons need their father's love and guidance in awakening their new powers. Mario joins the fight with his children for the worlds and Luigi's honor while trying to earn their forgiveness for abandoning them.

I found the concept behind this trailer very fascinating. When it comes to the original 1993 film, I don't think any of us can imagine a sequel taking place any time but "three weeks later." Even now, nearly 20 years later since the film's release, that adventure is still waiting to be told in the far off time of 1993. :)

Still, if a sequel were to be made now--which is very unlikely, but and interesting hypothetical--I feel that basing the story around a "Tron: Legacy"-style narrative would be very fitting. That sequel did very well with continuing the characters and concepts from the original after so long. "Super Mario Bros. Legacy" could do the same.

I'm very curious when the events of this sequel are supposed to take place. Clearly, there was promise of a follow-up only three weeks after the first adventure. Is "Legacy" that follow-up, or is it yet another adventure that would be the natural consequences of that untold story?

Yeah, in a way, I was somewhat inspired by the narrative of Tron Legacy when I made this. Although, it actually didn't occur to me until after I made it. (seriously, I'm that slow...lol)

But my idea for this story is that the "three weeks later" event had already happened. Mario and Luigi had already gone back to the other dimension and was introduced to the "real" Mushroom Kingdom. I had conceptualized that Daisy had helped her father restore their kingdom which was built over by Koopa City. Underneath that city lay the cocooned Mushroom Kingdom.

The king tells Daisy that the key to restoring the kingdom lies in a giant peach which Bowser (Emperor of all Koopas) had taken long ago. The Koopa in the 1993 film is not "Bowser" to me. So King Koopa is only a general of Emperor Bowser. Long ago, the Mushroom Kingdom was at peace, with the koopas, mushroom people, and all races existing in harmony.

It wasn't until the creation of the "Peach" of Prosperity, that the King's highest general, Bowser started a rebellion to overtake the kingdom. The Mushroom King wanted to use this Peach to spread harmony to the rest of the Mushroom kingdom and all its inhabitants. Bowser, however, believed that the koopas had a higher destiny and purpose than to be servants of the Mushroom Kingdom, stoled the Peach and began a war that would devastate the entire kingdom. He used the Peach to summon a meteor to wipe out the imperial capital.

The battle came to an end when 2 brave toadstools stood up against Bowser and stopped the meteor from completely annihilating the world. Their actions, however, caused a split in their dimensions and created "Our world". The 2 toadstools died in their efforts and just when Bowser was about to finish his task of using the Peach to secure his power, his own general, The Koopa, turned against him. Koopa fatally injured Bowser, but failed in acquiring the Peach. Bowser escapes with the Peach and disappeared into oblivion. The Koopa had been in control of the Kingdom ever since, until the appearance of 2 brave plumbers, thousands of years later.

Having learned of the true history of the Mushroom Kingdom, Daisy attempts to find The Peach, the only source of Power that would restore the Mushroom Kingdom to before Koopa's rule. But when Daisy's search for The Peach came to its end, she not only discovered the Giant Peach intact, but also, Bowser, in slumber. Daisy accidentally awakens Bowser in an attempt to take the Peach. She escapes and returns to our world to enlist Mario and Luigi for their help. Mario and Luigi learns of the story and began a journey to help Daisy retrieve the Peach before Bowser re-takes his revenge against the Mushroom King. In the midst of their journey, Luigi and Daisy become very much in love and were married by a fellow Toadstool priest, who believe Mario and Luigi are the reincarnations of the 2 Toadstool heroes who once saved the kingdom.

The priest also tells Mario and Luigi that in their kingdom, there lies 3 sources of power, 3 elemental deities that are believed to be the creators of their kingdom. The god of the Mushrooms, the god of the Flowers, and the god of the Stars. Mario and Luigi eventually learned to understand these 3 elements and drew their powers in times of need.

After a long journey and countless battles, Mario and Luigi finds Bowser and the Giant Peach. Using the powers of the Mushroom and the Flower, the 2 plumbers manages to take down Bowser. Thinking Bowser had been defeated, Mario and Luigi let down their guards and gave way to Bowser's final sneak attack. That attack fatally wounds Daisy. In a heat of rage, Mario summons the power of the Star and destroys Bowser.

Luigi, in despair, crys out for Daisy. Mario, watches helplessly as his brother loses his wife in agony. In the final moments, the giant Peach begins to glow and slowly breaks open. Out of the enormous fruit, comes a beautiful blond female. She tells Luigi that if he truly loves Daisy, to direct all of his heart to his last remaining Mushroom. Luigi focuses his emotions into the Mushroom and changes its colors to green. The blonde female uses the newly born green mushroom and resurrects Daisy. She tells the Luigi that a new species has been born out of their love. The green mushroom of Life.

The trio brings the Peach girl back to the Palace. The king falls to tears as he embraces his long lost daughter, the true heir of the Kingdom, Princess Peach Toadstool. The king explains that this is how all life is born in the Mushroom kingdom. Princess Daisy came out of the blossoming of a Daisy Flower. The kingdom is now saved and the plumbers are given a much needed rest in the Mushroom World. Princess Peach told Mario that she sensed the warmness of his heart when he was battling Bowser. Through his bravery, she fell in love with him while she was cocooned in the Peach. Mario and Peach were married with Luigi and Daisy as the witness. Soon after, the dynamic duo felt that they need to return home and left the Mushroom Kingdom, knowing they will always have a home in that other dimension, a world where life is timeless and love is eternal.

And then comes the story of their "Legacy"....

Ah. So you're trying to reconcile the film's gritty sci-fi concept with the fantasy atmosphere of the games? That's a common goal for many people when developing a sequel to the film, but your version is certainly one of the most thought-out takes I've come across. I really like the idea of the original, primordial world being "hidden" within the dying world. It's very "lost world."

That's all well and good, but how does Daniella feel about this?

What can I say, Mario is a playa!! lol

No, but actually Daniella IS in my trailer. Just played by someone else. Daniella becomes John and Henry's stepmother. She's the one in my trailer that says, "He is your son. For once in your life, think of someone other than yourself." Guess she's a very understanding woman

After Mario and Luigi comes back from saving the Mushroom Kingdom for the 2nd time, Mario DID infact marry Daniella. I guess he didn't tell her about Peach. Until John and Henry were brought over to this world to escape Bowser's resurrection (again), She had no choice but to take in the kids. Again... she's a very understanding woman. The fact that she told the old and blind Mario to "think of someone other than yourself" can indicate not only his sons, but her as well... kinda like, "How much more are we supposed to clean up your mess...?" lol

That was an incredibly well-made trailer, mason! I also found your concept to be a very fresh approach to a sequel and certainly the more than likely approach a studio would try to revive the franchise today.

I find the element I like best about your concept is that you built upon some of the seriousness & pseudo-realism of the first film. That was something I always liked about the original film - that it was colorful and imaginative, but had a bit of grittiness to it as well.

I could definitely see a modern sequel having this type of tone that caters more to an older audience rather than children.

Great job!
