SMB: (Fan Film Project)
Okay, I was going to wait before talking about this, but I couldn't wait any longer.
I'm planning a fan film on a plumbers budget haha. After reading the original 1991 screenplay I wanted to do an adaptation on it but, I wanted do something original so I ended up writing a screenplay of my own. It's a major change in plot and characters. Koopa/Bowser is not going to be in it, (SHOCK!) I know but I didn't want to make it a human version and I don't have any way of creating a live action Bowser so, I went original and invented a villain. The villain is going to be an Evil Prince from the Beanbean Kingdom (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (Not Prince Peasley Either)). Princess Peach is in it and already Ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. (No sideplot of The villain kidnapping her and bringing her to the Mushroom Kingdom.) Mario doesn't have a negative attitude like he does in the 1991 screenplay. Luigi is laid back and is a dreamer. (so he's not much different.) This is more like an RPG story, hopefully it will appeal to any members here.
P.S. Sorry for any bad grammer, I know I suck at it. lol.

Re: SMB: (Fan Film Project)
Sounds fun! Will you be posting the script at all, or will we have to wait until we see some footage?
I also recommend checking out marioblaster's Mushroom Madness fan film. He's done amazing work in every area, so I'm sure you can take a cue from him and really get your own project started.

I may wait to post some script stuff, I'm in the middle of a re-write but you never know. I saw marioblaster's work and I'm excited to see it.
Here is a mockup of a scene, it's a concept pic so enjoy.

Looks good. Concepts are always fun to work with, but actually jumping in to make costumes, props and sets is far more important. Know what your limitations are and go for it!

My costume (Me as Mario) is 100% done (Infact that is a real picture of me), I've got almost all the props needed. Locations are okay (Mostly being filmed outside.) I bought anything I could use as a possible prop for the movie on halloween.
(MY PROP LIST)
Sack of Party Coins - Gold Coins
Magic Scepter - Magic Wand
Bob-Omb dip candy - Bob-Omb. (Similar to the ones seen in the actual 1993 movie.)
Assorted Tools. (Nobody Touches My Tools!)
Mushroom Candy tins - Mushroom Powerups.
Foam Star - Invincible Star
Plastic Feather - Super Cape Feather.
I'm also going to be attempting Matte Painting shots since I'm nowhere near a real castle. I'll be using models and trick photography special effect shots.
Here is a movie I made back in high school.

Re: SMB: (Fan Film Project)
Well, I've finally got a name for this movie. Super Mario Bros: The Legend Begins. and as a little treat I made a card based off the Movie trading Cards.
Here is some more details to whet your appetites.
Toad has a pretty good role: sidekick lol.
I'm introducing Popple and Fawful as the villains henchmen. (Iggy and Spike anyone?)
Mario and Luigi's Parent's make an appearance in some form or another.
Devo Guns make a cameo appearance. (O_O okay....I'm scared now.)
that's all for now! I will update when I can until then. (BOB-OMB!)

Good list of props. Very inexpensive, yet hopefully fully effective if used properly.

Matte paintings should really help in making your film feel like it's actually set in another world, but unless you or someone you know is a very talented artist I would stress only utilizing them when you absolutely have to. Real-world locations, like local forests, fields and parks would be much more effective and immersive.
Models and trick photography are also a good route. We're all big fans of practical effects here, so no matter how well you execute them in your film we'll still love the effort.

About half of my locations will be filmed in my friends backyard which is essentially a nature preserve given how big it is. O_o, I'll be shooting in a few places in the town I live in. (It's got some Brooklyn like parts to them and it's also very 80's like.)

Yeah, With my background in Graphic Design and Film it shouldn't be too hard. (My best special effects so far have been green screen shots.)

Good job, keep up the good work. But you should also think about doing an original thing that you or someone you know wrote yourself and then making a collaborative effort to pull together as a team and make something entirely new-- this is why people hate Hollywood so much right now, because there's nothing original. I'm not saying you should give up on your idea, I'm just saying that maybe after you finish this, write something on your own and see if you can film it!
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

It's always good to start with a recognized property since you'll gain the most attention with it. No one cares about original projects. It's creative spins on characters we all know and love that get people talking and looking forward to future, original works from the same artist.

Actually aside from this Project, I've been writing an Action movie set in the Near Future. It's a dark character/story drivin series that I will work on some day after I finish this little Mario movie I've got cooked up. But Even this movie will be Original for the most part.

A Release Date?.....I would say hopefully Late Summer 2012. The way it's looking I can film the whole in 5 weekends and spend a month editing and adding the special effects. right now I'm building the last of the major props and saving up money for a new video camera and costumes.
SCRIPT SAMPLES:
Since I showed you guys the prologue here are two scenes that should make you crave more.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
EXT: Brooklyn Street: Day
SD: Mario looking frustrated is trying to keep his cool while Luigi enjoys a hero sandwich.
MARIO:
Great, in ten minutes...TEN minutes, you turn a one hour job into a three hour job and we lose money for that.
LUIGI:
I said I was sorry and besides, I bought you two Italian subs and a Stromboli sandwich.
MARIO:
I guess I can't stay mad at you, you always knew how to bribe me...with food.
LUIGI:
It will be fine, Brooklyn is full of work.
MARIO:
Not so much since Scapelli Brothers came to town.
LUIGI:
Oh yeah...
MARIO:
Those clowns has been ruining business for us for the last six months and I'm sick of it.
LUIGI:
What are you going to do Mario?
MARIO:
Next time they show up to one of OUR jobs I'm a going to give them a piece of my mind.
LUIGI:
Fists don't count as your mind.
MARIO:
…
_______________________________________________________________________________________
(Mario's coffee date with Pauline)
SD: This scene is to establish Pauline into the movie as Mario's ex girlfriend and give some back story to Mario.)
MARIO:
Your looking pretty today.
PAULINE:
Thank you, your looking rugged and handsome yourself.
MARIO:
I try.
PAULINE:
Why did you call me up here for?
MARIO:
I need some cash...I promise I'll pay you back.
PAULINE:
The Scapelli Brothers again?
MARIO:
Yeah...damit I swear they will get what's coming to them.
PAULINE:
Is it worth going to jail over?
MARIO:
I never said I'd hurt them did I?
PAULINE:
Remember Allen Bosco?
MARIO:
Hey, I wasn't about to let that bozo keep embarrassing you like he was. So I punched him.
PAULINE:
You almost got expelled for that.
MARIO:
Yeah but I would have successfully protected your honor.
Luigi...mess this up, and I'll be an only child.

You have a long list of characters. Unless you personally know that many people who are willing to act in those roles I'd suggest trimming them down. For a self-financed and shot short film you're really better off sticking to a cohesive and focused story in which only three to five characters interact.

I considered it but In my story He would be useless since The Focus is on the Mario Bros. and there build up to the Mushroom World. The Scapelli Brothers in my story only appear on screen for like 2 minutes and that's the end of the "Scapelli Reference". The rest is secret....

I'll do what I can. Right now I'm not even ready for production yet, I'm working on a poster right now. but other than that. I really want to keep it contained to here.
As for Donations... Absolutely not. I'm not interested in donations. This is a non-profit project.

I'm not gonna lie. That's pretty damn cool. So I'm assuming you have your actors and actresses?
. Assuming from ol Bitterleaf in the back I say you have some actors.
Though I must ask, what's the personality of Bitterleaf? Is he a tough, violent, badass? Or is he mostly a whiny pussy?

I have 50% of my actors, the female characters will be a little tough but I have faith.
Prince Bitterleaf is a Jealous power-hungry character, he is sinister and loves to take things past "too far."
Luigi...mess this up, and I'll be an only child.

The poster is pretty cool. I expect good things from this film. Don't let us down.

I'm going to make this the best thing I can, I'm excited to make it. Once I get a new video camera it will be on like Donkey Kong.

Hey, if the film does well with the reviews will you do another one? Or was always intended as a one shot.
Isn't this a little feminine?
Yes. I know. It was my ex wife's.
But you wear this stuff?!
Yeah on an occasion we have a date.

When coming up with this one I came up with 4 more concepts I wanted to try out.
Some sequel concepts I came up with were...
A movie with Bowser as the Villain. (A cinematic adaptation to Super Mario Bros. 3)
A story involving Tatanga and Daisy (A story similar to SML but with a style similar to Galaxy)
A plot featuring Dimento, Mr. L and Rosalina and reinventing the Stanley Character from Donkey Kong 3 ( A plot that combines parts of Galaxy and Super Paper Mario, also features a sideplot about Mario reuniting with his best friend Stanley whom haven't been friends in 5 years thanks to a big arguement.)
and! something featuring the X-Nauts. (The epic finale, this story will be based of an old fan-comic I wrote many years ago but featuring Mario instead of myself as the hero.)
Luigi...mess this up, and I'll be an only child.

I have said it before and will continue to say it: never think so far ahead. We often get caught up in the future of these projects while overlooking the crucial beginning. It's fun to imagine, but even more fun to create.

However, this would be a really cool adaptation. Bowser just looked great in that game with his cape.

I have finished the script of SMB: The Legend Begins. I'm getting really close to filming.

Yeah, now if I can just learn facial cosmetics and learn how to make an awesome Bowser Mask I'm set.

Makeup effects is a very time-consuming practice, though it's also intuitive and effective. I recommend just buying a Halloween makeup kit online and experimenting with it on yourself or a friend. Spirit Halloween has some quality makeup products and even horns.

Yeah, I wish I was as talented as the contestants of Face Off, they have made some cool masks.
*Critical Update*
Thanks to a computer malfunction, my script has been corrupted and cannot be opened again...so I have to rewrite the whole script. This doesn't delay anything but it still makes me mad.
*WONDERFUL NEWS*
Thanks to my friend Playing Prince Bitterleaf, I have now have my script back. this day keeps getting better and better. Thank you fungus, I trusted you.

That's unfortunate that you lost the script, but if you hadn't have been able to recover it I would have said that it would just gives you the opportunity to rework it and hone it into a better product. I've lost stories and essays before myself, but every time I always manage to rewrite it even better because I know where I'm going.

It would have been totally opposite for me, I wrote the script in about three weeks and since my classes started back up, my mind would be on other things and the quality of my story would have been gone.
On another note...
I've decided to remove the Scapelli Brothers from my movie. (I'm trying to be original so I'm cutting off some of nostalgic fat)
since I'm a cool guy, here is how the scene would have played out...
(SCENE 4)
(SD stands for Scene Description.)
EXT: ROSIE CAFE: DAY
SD: Mario and Luigi have been called out to Rosie's Cafe to repair a broken dishwasher. They have been offered a generous payment too.
MARIO:
Oh this is going to be good. PAYDAY!
(Eddie and Doug Scapelli ENTER)
EDDIE:
Well well well, if it ain't the Stupid Mario Bros.
MARIO:
(looking angry) Get out of here Eddie, this job is for the pros.
EDDIE:
OH! I'm sorry I couldn’t tell you were a professional based on the shabby overalls
MARIO:
These “overalls†have proven more efficient than those onesies you guys wear.
(EDDIE AND DOUG equip Crowbars)
DOUG:
I'd watch your tongue Mario, you wouldn’t want to be swimming down the river.
MARIO:
Doug, you don't even know a pipe from a crowbar.
(Doug looks down.)
DOUG:
Huh?
EDDIE:
You can't win Mario!
MARIO:
Try me! (Mario equips his plunger and swings)
(Mario catches Doug off guard and pushes him to the ground, Eddie swings his crowbar and Luigi slams his plunger right into Eddie's face. The Mario Bros flee.)
EDDIE:
(Pulling off plunger) I'LL GET THOSE PLUMBERS!!!
(END SCENE)
Luigi...mess this up, and I'll be an only child.
