SMB - A Guilty Pleasure

Postby stephanieyip » Fri Jan 27, 2012 5:14 pm

OK let's face it, Super Mario Bros. (SMB) is NOT the best movie in the world. Heck, it's been hailed as being so bad that many have placed it on their blacklist for movies to avoid at all costs.

But despite all the bad press it's received (most deservedly so) I only have fond memories of it. I remember watching it as a child in one of those "let's see what's on TV tonight" moments and finding myself glued to the screen until the very end. It was fun, it was stupid and it was 104 minutes of my life that I can proudly announce that I did not wish to claim back. Perhaps it was because I was a kid when I first watched it or perhaps I just know how to not take my films too seriously when I don't need to. Then again, maybe I just have poor taste. Whatever the case, I've announced it as one of my guilty (film) pleasures on 2012 Movies this month. You can read my piece here:

Hope you enjoy!

Oh and in case you were wondering, yes, I'm also proud of announce that I own the SMB on DVD and have whacked it into my player more than once for a good ol' night of entertainment.

The film really is a pleasure, though certainly not as guilty for some as for others. We acknowledge its flaws and feel that its strengths far outweigh them and make for a much more enjoyable experience.

We appreciate you posting this article here. It really was a good read that really tapped into what we as fans love about the film. It must have come as a surprise to learn that it has an actual community surrounding it. You just need to look at it from the right perspective to truly understand both what they were attempting and what they ultimately accomplished. It's something fascinating to behold.
