Redstar talks Super Mario Bros. on Sequelcast

Postby Sequelcast » Wed Jun 27, 2012 8:20 am

I recently had on Redstar of these very forums on my podcast, the Sequelcast, as a guest to to talk about the Super Mario Bros. movie. You might wonder why we're talking about a movie without a sequel on the show, but it's because it's on of the Sequelcast Special episodes in which I break format a little bit.

The show runs about an hour. The language is clean, although that isn't the case in a lot of the other episodes of the Sequelcast I have done.

Enjoy!

I had a lot of fun doing this. Sequelcast invited me onto the show several weeks ago, so I had a fair amount of time to prepare what I wanted to talk about, but in the end the discussion was largely improvised. We covered many aspects of the film, from the original fantasy script to the nationwide screenings we're currently holding to even a potential sequel comic!

I hope all you enjoy listening to it as much as I did joining in. :D

I really enjoyed listening to this as well. Steven did a great job representing the site, and he was also able to speak on a wide variety of SMB-related topics and fill in a lot of important pieces to many misconceptions people have about the film.

I'm happy that Sequelcast is the first podcast we've been invited on. Hopefully we can be involved in some others in the future :)

Am I the only one who had no idea that Samantha Mathis played Daisy's mother in the opening scene?

I think what's more interesting is that Michael Keaton was considered to play Koopa! I personally think Keaton would be better as Koopa's right hand man that you know nothing about.
Isn't this a little feminine?

Yes. I know. It was my ex wife's.

But you wear this stuff?!

Yeah on an occasion we have a date.

It's funny, because in my experience most people either don't realize that Mathis played Daisy's mother as well or they think it was completely obvious and indicative of lazy casting. I mean, if so many people don't even realize it's her, then you can't argue that it was lazy. They did amazing makeup work.

Thrasher (my co-host) and I recorded an audio commentary for the Super Mario Bros. movie on the latest episode of SequelCommentary. There might be mild language at times. Enjoy! I'm really happy at the positive response to the Sequelcast Special episode I did with Steven and hope you enjoy this commentary for the movie as well.

Download the episode: SequelCommentary Ep. 2: Super Mario Bros.

I enjoyed this commentary quite a bit. It was good to hear mostly positive things about the film. The movie has some problems overall, but when you look at individual pieces (characters, sets, makeup, animatronics, etc) there's really a lot to like.

Still, I have to be my nitpicky self and correct some stuff mentioned on the commentary:

Like I told the Sequelcast guys on Twitter, there was never an SMB video game based on the movie. It just didn't happen. I'm positive that Thrasher was thinking about the Street Fighter Movie game which DID have digitized characters created from special footage shot during the film's production.

Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel were the directors of this film. They (along with writer George Stone) created Max Headroom and the two directed the original TV movie. They had no involvement in the TV series (very much in the same vein as SMB in which they were asked to leave the production towards the end).

In the film, Iggy and Spike are Koopa's cousins. Iggy is named after one of the Koopa Kids but Spike is actually an enemy from Super Mario Bros. 3. Still, the two characters are the filmmakers way of having Koopa "relatives" as a part of the story.

Thanks for listening and enjoying it!

When we were recording the commentary, we had several issues with Skype crashing, so by the time we had recorded a complete commentary it was our fourth try. As I result, I wasn't looking at Wikipedia for reference for fear of Skype or my computer crashing. I should have at least had things like the directors' names in a notepad file for reference and apologize for that, yet I realize mistakes will be made. We do research for all the Sequelcast shows, but we don't work off an outline in order to give the show a looser, more relaxed feel.

Also, because the whole show is done through Skype, it makes more pauses in the conversation, which makes it very difficult for a conversation to be as "rapid fire" as it would be if Thrasher and I recorded it in person (I'm in Oregon, he's in Kentucky).

I enjoyed it. Sure, mistakes were made, but we're not all diehard Super Mario Bros. (movie or games) fans here.

I would love to see a graphic novel sequel to the movie that picks up where the ending left off, I always thought there were so many routes they could go with the story and it always frustrated me that they weren't taken, but seeing as how the movie did poor at the box office, I could see why they didn't want to take the risk. But hopefully with this amazing website, the growing number of fans and nostalgia, the Bros. will make a comeback.

Some exciting news on the Sequelcast Special episode on Super Mario Bros. with redstar as the guest. It's our 2nd most downloaded episode from the past six months (the 1st most downloaded episode in the past six months was a Sequelcast Special on 3D Movies)! Congratulations! Who would have thought an episode on Super Mario Bros. would be more popular than episodes on Lethal Weapon, Men in Black, etc. Thanks again for being on the show and helping to promote the Super Mario Bros. Sequelcast discussion on the site.

Yay!

It still continues to amaze me how popular the film is via podcasts, reviews and other events. Even our nationwide screenings have been far more successful than we ever thought possible. People are just curious even after all these years.

You've now covered the film three times, but if you guys ever want to revisit it for whatever reason (upon the release of the sequel comic or a re-cut) then let us know; we'd be happy to work with again. Until then, stick around and be involved!

Great interview, I learned a lot. I actually had never heard that they spent 10 million dollars on the "fantasy" screenplay, building sets and stuff like that, which severely knocked down their budget...

I am also enlightened to know that everyone's favorite Govenator was one of the early choices for the role of Koopa, which is ironic as Michael Keaton, who played Batman was also, and as we all know Arnold Schwarzenegger played one of Batman's strongest villains in 1997's "Batman & Robin," as the cold-hearted Mister Freeze!

Very good podcast, I must say. I'm glad to have been able to listen to it.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.
