My SMB movie memories

Postby seanmulry » Mon Jul 23, 2012 7:04 pm

I have been a lifelong fan of the Super Mario Bros. games. I also love the SMB movie. I saw it when it originally was released in theaters and loved it since then. So here is my memory of seeing the movie and what impact it had on me.

I was six years old. I had played almost every Mario Bros. game that Nintendo released. I remember seeing commercials on TV about the Super Mario Bros. movie and I remember feeling very fascinated. Then one day my parents took me and my older sister to the movies ( I remember not knowing what we were going to see on the way to the theater, I guess they meant for it to be a surprise.) As soon as we were in the theater and the movie started I got really excited. We were seeing Super Mario Bros.!!!

A couple things that stick out in my mind is that I recognised Bob Hoskins voice as soon as started talking to Luigi. I thought to myself "That's the guy from Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" ( at that age I didn't know Hoskins by name I just recognized his face and voice). I even remember being fascinated by some of the visual effects. Daisy"s face appearing and dissolving in the rock wall while screaming for Luigi was quite a sight. I actually remember being a little creeped out when Toad was in the devo chamber. I hadn't seen effects like this in a movie before! I also got very excited when Mario and Luigi were in there red blue/green blue costumes! It was close to what they were like in the game!

I enjoyed the movie back then and years later I rented it on video and I enjoyed it a second time around. And whenever it came on TV I was always there to watch it. And as you can imagine I bought the DVD as soon as I saw it!

I got very excited when I found the Super Mario Bros. Movie Arhive website! It's a great place where fans of the movie can view memorabilia, behind the scenes stuff, scripts etc. It was this site where I learned about the midnight screening of the SMB movie in NYC on April 27th (My birthday!!!).

It's really wonderful that this movie has grown on people over years and has the fanbase that it has. I'm honored to be one of the fans from the very original theatrical release!

It was a real pleasure reading this, Sean, especially considering how long you've been absent from the site. We've only grown larger as a community since, all because of the passion that fans such as yourself have for the movie. Stick around and enjoy the place as it just keeps getting better!

I'll never forget the first time I learned of the movie's existence. I had just become a Mario fan in 1996 with the release of "Super Mario 64" and the next summer my Dad said "Hey, the Mario movie's on TV!" And I said "Wait, there's a movie?!" I was floored.

"Who plays Mario?" I asked, and my Dad told me it was Bob Hoskins, who was and is my favorite actor ever since I saw him in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," based on the gritty crime pulp novel "Who Censored Roger Rabbit." So since then, I've been addicted, it changed my life forever. The Mario movie is forever.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.
