Official Plot Holes/Goofs/Inconsistencies Thread
So I thought perhaps there should be a thread on this stuff. Every movie has plot holes, and goofs/inconsistencies of some sort. So this is the place to present/confirm/deny that stuff. You guys can post what YOU think is a plot hole/goof/inconsistency, and I'll make an ongoing list here in the top post to track them. And then when we come up with reasons/excuses for them, I'll post those as well
Re: SMB Movie Plot Holes/Goofs/Inconsistencies
one weird one is right before Mario and Luigi blast Koopa with the Devo guns when Mario yells "DUCK" to duck Koopa's fireball, there is already a shot of them ducking. There are I believe several instances of audio not being synced up with mouths moving. IMDB has a list of course!
I wonder if Spike getting the square root wrong is more along the lines with they're still dumb even after being evolved rather than an error by the filmmakers.
There's one on there....
If you look closely, you can see the boots in the elevator when they're climbing out. I wonder if they were too hard to try and climb in? Or the real reason, they needed Mario and Luigi to be without the boots so Luigi can get them at the end

When the Mario Bros. are in the elevator with the dancing Goombas, they are wearing their specialized jump boots. When they get out of the elevator, they are wearing their normal shoes.

Re: SMB Movie Plot Holes/Goofs/Inconsistencies
Ooh, maybe there's a deleted scene detailing why they get rid of the boots. I always wondered how they lost them...I'll have to take a look at that elevator scene!
Re: SMB Movie Plot Holes/Goofs/Inconsistencies
Not really a goof or inconsistency but I always found it weird Daisy was willing to get in the van with two strangers. Even though Luigi was acting goofy, ehh I guess I could accept it but seems weird she would go with them with all the missing Brooklyn girls. Guess she knew she could trust them I suppose.

Re: SMB Movie Plot Holes/Goofs/Inconsistencies
Well, from the way Scapelli was acting around her, and the shot of her looking suspiciously in Iggy and Spike's direction, I think she probably thought she'd take her chances with the Mario Bros. at that point, heh.

Anybody ever wonder why Luigi's belt is rainbow striped? That really makes me wonder, especially the way Nintendo decided to develope that character. (play Smash Bros Brawl, choose Luigi, select his colors, check out his moves, you'll see what I'm talking about)

It might be made from a discarded luggage-strap (you know, the rainbow-striped ones). That would indicate just how badly the Mario Bros. name has been doing.

For the record, I was being 99% serious. The only thing I was serious about is the fact that Nintendo litterly took this character and made him into Bruno or something.

When the bros are trapped between the Cops and Goombas on the catwalk, the Goombas shoot fireballs, and the cops aren't seen on the other side. Obviously to be clear of the flames effect but still

Re: SMB Movie Plot Holes/Goofs/Inconsistencies
At first I was going to post this as a possible deleted scene, but this as an inconsistency is probably more likely.
When Mario jumps down into the street from the Klown Kar and is followed by Koopa chasing him, we cut to a scene of Luigi, Daisy, and the other missing girls just walking in on Lena struggling with the rock and reveling in its power. After this short scene, we cut back to Mario and Koopa... But they're now on a platform in a standoff, at which point Mario winds the Bob-Omb. How did they get there? Is there a deleted scene, just a plot hole, or are we to believe they got up there into that position during the two minutes we were away?
Anyone with the novelization that can check that out would be helpful.

Re: SMB Movie Plot Holes/Goofs/Inconsistencies
Here's another: when Mario and Luigi first enter the parallel world and they just being to explore Dinohattan, they see Daisy being forced into a cab by Iggy and Spike. Luigi calls down to Daisy, but him and Mario are forced away by a police officer. The shot then cuts rather sharply to both of them running to a fungus-covered bannister which then collapses, the both of them falling over into a pile of fungus.
It feels to me there was an extended scene or at least a few shots of them "exploring" the world they just entered a little more. Either that or a mistake.

Re: SMB Movie Plot Holes/Goofs/Inconsistencies
One thing I noticed was that in the beginning of the movie, when Iggy and Spike are stalking daisy in their Taxi cab, Spike's driver side door is there. But later when they are stalking Daniella after they get out of the restaurant, the driver's side door is missing!! You can see it int eh shot when they pull out of their spot and begin driving.
Makes me wonder if there is a deleted scene somewhere that shows how they got the door torn off. Probably in some comedic attempt to try and get daisy that was cut out (besides the typical glass window gag that was kept in, lol).

Well, there are so many ripped-off driver's-side doors in Brooklyn, they really didn't think anyone would notice.

Where does Yoshi go between the times he indicates the PA system to Daisy and when Mario and Luigi arrive in Devo 4?

He goes off to watch a marathon of Humans, a sitcom in Dinohattan. Basically, it's dinosaurs in rubber suits playing humans...a little bit like Dinosaurs but in reverse. Oddly enough, only the Goombas find it funny, but Yoshi gets a few chuckles out of it.

i already mentioned this in another thread, but during the scene where the SMB meet Toad for the first time, Mario is clearly irritated by his singing. Yet when the cop car pulls up Mario is suddenly busting a move to the song.

Re: Official Plot Holes/Goofs/Inconsistencies Thread
Okay, I got one.
I know that, in a movie where a meteorite sent dinosaurs into a parallel dimension, and where humanoids can be "de-evolved" into more primitive life-forms, that real-world physics are something I shouldn't worry about too much. But worry I do, because it's fun, and I like to stretch my brain a bit.
The biggest problem I have is with the Thwomp Stompers. Now, I'm no physics major, don't get me wrong, but something doesn't look right from the way they operate. Am I to assume that the main thrust is generated by the hydraulic soles, or are there a pair of thrusters on the back (powered, I suppose, by the Bullet Bill cartridges) which generate the appropriate thrust? If the second's the case, then the hydraulic soles seem to be a form of landing gear.
At any rate, if the thrust of the jump is the downward thrust of the soles, then this would probably result in the mechanism breaking*. It would have made much more sense to have Mario and Luigi do a slight hop upward after activating the boots, THEN have the soles come down and provide an augmented upward thrust from that. Something seems very, very wrong with the "rocket boots" thing we see in the movie proper.
(*Or, even worse, the mechanism going up through the foot and into the calf-muscle or bone. Ouch!)

I've actually thought of this problem myself. In my attempt to rationalize the power of the Boots I've developed a little theory I think eases the issue a little: since the sub-dimension is so small and somewhat unstable, perhaps its physics are likewise weaker?
Gravity may have less push/pull, which allows for greater jumping. I imagine being in Dinohattan is almost like being on the moon.

I'm torn, as usual. You have a pretty good idea there, Redstar. Why don't you pass it on to Chauncey for his SMB project? He might find it an extra little detail that makes his universe just that bit more 3-dimensional.
Unfortunately, you have almost nothing in the film to back that up, since gravity seems to work the same in Dinohattan (cf. the plunge down the Koopahari tunnel) as it does up here. Still, I like your idea. It's almost for the same reason that the cars down there use electricity, maybe...and they would use their dead as fossil fuels; they're that ruthless!

When they get arrested, the desk clerk, a guy with a mustache says "Mike! Show these Marios around," and then the next thing we see is the same desk clerk who booked them escorting them through the gate-- so is Mike the desk clerk's twin brother? A clone? Then this character shows up several more times as various different positions in Koopa's army. He's also the one who arrests Lena and presents Koopa with the rock.

Well, as reptiles most of the characters were probably born in whole clutches of eggs. It makes sense that some of those eggs would be identical siblings. Some of these identical siblings survive into adulthood; others, like Koopa, kill all their other nestmates. Makes sense!

Re: Official Plot Holes/Goofs/Inconsistencies Thread
Someone (Serum, I think) posted in the Italian Cut thread that the King's revival and "Love those plumbers" comment is a plot hole. My question is, in what way? As a fungus blob, the King is shown to be at least aware of what's going on. Take, for example, the scene where the Bob-omb drops down into Luigi's line of sight. The thing's obviously a very powerful weapon, and something you don't find very commonly on the streets (and if you do, it'll cost you a lot of money). The only conclusion I can reach is, the King snatched it when nobody was looking.
It brings me to another idea: were there other plumbers besides Mario and Luigi? It's the only thing I can think of--Koopa specifically calls out for a "Plumber Alert" APB. And, for another thing, are some of the Goombas possibly those earlier plumbers, de-evolved because they weren't as fast on their toes as Mario and Luigi were?

Re: Official Plot Holes/Goofs/Inconsistencies Thread
The reason the king's revival is a plot hole is because they never explain how the king got re-evolved. There was no beam of light or any indication that someone used the Devo gun on him, in fact no one seemed to be there when the King was revived.
So how could be the king re-evolved if he wasn't shot by a devo gun? The fact that no one else was there also proves why this is a plot hole.

Oh, okay! I see it now...it's common in fantasy literature/movies for the "bad spell" to be broken the moment the evil wizard gets killed. The way I see it in this case, the King had been like that for a very long time, and in his fungus-ey state, had somehow figured out how to pull himself back together.
Also, the way he very cleanly came out of it (fungus turning into a cape, etc.) led me to believe that he had merely been trapped inside the fungus as opposed to "de-evolved." Toad's ramblings aside, the King's de-evolution is the story that Koopa wanted everyone to know. Trapping the King in the fungus-form seems a lot worse than de-evolution. As I stated earlier, he was pretty with-it for a load of snot. A lesser man would have died or gone horribly insane from panic, but he saw it as an advantage once the initial fear wore off: he could pull off a surveillance system far better than Koopa's tech.

My thought is that the merging of the dimensions caused a surge of radiation to blast through the city's power grid, re-evolving the King due to genetic memory retaining a "blueprint" of his original form. This, of course, would lead to Koopa-like instability over time.
Re: Official Plot Holes/Goofs/Inconsistencies Thread
Hi, this is my first entry so....yeah.
When koopa is de-evolved in the devo chamber, earlier versions of the script, like the "Mad Max" one, stated that the machine was malfunctioning, and after overloading with Simon's (the technitian guy) de-evolution, transforming him into slime. Koopa is de-evolved in his "jurassic" state, but nothing happens to him after that, sure, in the scene where he goes Christian Weston Chandler we briefly see his face de and evolve, but nothing happens after, though in the '92 draft, he gradually de-evolves, transforming him into a t-rex in the climax.
what do you guys think of that? Maybe they should re-edit the film to make Koopa transform into a T-rex on his own rather than Mario and Luigi hoping for the best with their guns?

Welcome to the board.
And no. They should not re-edit the film adding new stuff unless it's in footage that was cut out of the movie. George Lucas uses the excuse that "films are never finished, they're abandoned," which is BS. There's a difference between an extended cut using previously unused footage shot during the movie's production and putting in stuff that's brand new for the sake of putting in new stuff. Han shot first and Koopa de-evolved the way he did.

While Koopa's progression into a crazed T. rex was certainly handled much better in the early scripts I don't believe it would be possible to re-edit the film itself closer to that vision. We've heard of just one additional moment in which Koopa had a de-evolution 'tic,' which likely wouldn't be enough to support a new throughline.
Even if there were more such moments you couldn't just remove Mario and Luigi's hand in the climax as that was all that they filmed. No alternate takes; nothing.

To add to that, it kinda looked like Koopa was trying to keep himself together or reform back to his human self right before he turned into slime, if you watch closely his face turns back to human like for a few seconds before he fell out of that thing he was in.

She saw Iggy and Spike glaring and eyeing her down from behind their newspaper, and felt a little threatened with Scapelli arriving at the scene of the excavation site so she just kind of wanted to get away from Iggy and Sike who were suspiciously watching her. It is still a little scary that she just got into a random, run-down van though! Haha
I'm not sure if it's a goof, but here is something that I might have noticed. I realized that at the 'Bella Napoli' restaurant scene, Daisy was eating pasta. I dont actually recall seeing, or even thinking twice about it, but did Daisy have meatballs on her spaghetti? If so she was eating meat! Later in the movie she says that she's a vegetarian. "I don't eat anything with a face". Again, I don't remember if she was eating meatballs, but it's something that I just kind of remembered.

Could have been tofu or veggie meatballs

I dont actually recall seeing, or even thinking twice about it, but did Daisy have meatballs on her spaghetti? If so she was eating meat! Later in the movie she says that she's a vegetarian. "I don't eat anything with a face". Again, I don't remember if she was eating meatballs, but it's something that I just kind of remembered.
Could have been tofu or veggie meatballs
That's about as likely as the circles of purple that you see on Shaggy and Scooby's pizza being eggplant rather than pepperoni.

Damn it, now I have to find out if Domino's or Pizza Hut will put fried eggplant on my pizza... I love eggplant, and it never occurred to me to put it on pizza before.
What would you do without your big brother?
I'd like to give it a shot and find out.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before but when Luigi and Mario are going through the tunnel after Daisy, Luigi is first in line. But later as they get closer and Daisy begins popping out of the wall, Mario is first in line.
As if this wasn't enough, after they pass through the dimension, Luigi is first running through that tunnel. But sure enough, who exits through the door first? why it's Mario.

Sorry for such a late reply, but yeah, i agree with you guys, movies shouldnt be altered that abruptly, but the way you guys talk about it is like ''if a movie is released, it should stay in that form FOREVAARR'' but i do have a theory that movies can be improved by tinkering here and there, nothing too dramatic.
For Example, i made this simple edit of the original Lord of the Rings 78 movie, i made some slight alterations, and i guess it's better than the original.
Come on, i know some of you wanna get rid of that terrible joke Luigi made when Lena blew up
How do i put photos on here?
